    double nope.

Stricken is a term used to describe something happening in the present tense, whereas struck is the past tense. As such, if he's refering to something happening at the time, it would be stricken, if he;s refering to something that has occured, it is struck

one says struck by lightning, because they refer to a past event. If you see someone next to you get hit, then they would be stricken by lightning as it was occuring at that moment in time.

Okay, in the first place, when I suggested "stricken" I was joking.

In the second place, I understand that "struck" is active, and "stricken" is passive:
    - Lightning struck the tree.
    - The tree was stricken by lightning.

And in the third place, "stricken" is now considered archaic, with "struck" being preferred.

Stricken is the past participle of 'to strike' and 'struck' is the past tense and participle of 'to strike'.

In this case we're talking about the past tense: "lightning struck the tree"

If the tree 'had been stricken with lightning' that's past perfect* tense (you can also say 'has been stricken' and 'will have been stricken' although the last one is really HORRIBLE)

Or we could talk about 'the lightning-stricken tree' - which again feels a little bit clunky and ye olde Englifhe.

(The example you gave ('was stricken') is also valid, and is indeed the passive voice)

But yeah 'stricken' is generally just a wee bit old fashioned for anything other than disease (at least in English English; Yanklish might be different though)

You can use struck in all the above ways as well, and it generally lends itself to more elegant sentence construction, which is probably why it took off and 'stricken' got dumped by the wayside.

(*perfect is a tense which describes a more ongoing or recent action than simple tenses (or sometimes just greater clarity), if you were wondering. Which most people probably are not)
Probably not a robot from the future sent back to exterminate all human life.

SoylentDave is pretty much the only person who has it right. (Are we surprised he's British?)

For those who TL;DR'd his post, the gist of it is:

Stricken is the original past participle, which is now rather archaic.
Struck is the original past tense, which is now often used in place of the past participle.

Oh, and Dave, it's also archaic over here. The only difference like this that I can think of--where we use the older past participle and you use the past tense as past participle--is "gotten" vs. "got".

I always thought the remrak about Durkon taking so long because of his short legs, even though he was 15 feet tall, was just a silly joke. Then I've read this: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/righteousMight.htm and it specifically states that the spell does not change your speed.

I just realized (yes, I'm slow) that the reason we cut away to an image of Varsuvious in the trap is because Roy was discussing the "New Villain" who killed the Draketooth clan, and even now might be corrupting the gate.

I always thought that was just a reference to the common acronym for Bad *** Mother ******s. Thank for enlightening me. ^_^

On another note, I never realized that the prisoners in the Empire of Blood were pretty much doomed to their burny fate thanks to their garments. Sure, it's an Empire of Blood...red will be a common motif there, yet the simple fact that they were Red Shirts Red Shorts kind of sealed their fate at the bottom of this strip. Had Elan been around at the time, I'm pretty sure it would have been warning enough...whether or not he'd accept the fact - out of necessity for drama - is questionable.
