I'm more concerned with why cephalashy is still so cute. More cute than normal fluttershy.

Almost every time a discussion of a popular story pops up somewhere, I feel like an incredibly snooty bully (the kind with fishnet stockings and a monocle), because my first instinct is to drop in from the skies and talk about all the flaws and reasons why the story doesn't deserve the accolades it gets. Maybe it would be better if I acted like a proper lady afterward and invited everypony to tea, but... argh.

I have become everything I hate. I am so wrapped up in literary critique that I have lost sight of the real reason why fanfiction exists: the enjoyment and delight of the authors and the readers. Things that achieve this deserve praise, regardless of their flaws. The flaws don't really matter outside of a discussion comparing the various stories.

We've already been over how I mostly agree with all the other ponies abou how you have every right to actually judge and critique- if anypony here is qualified to do so, it's you.

I'll instead focus on the second half. Being what you hate. That's not fun.
I'm pretty sure you have already addressed this yourself, but if not well, like any habit just try and catch yourself in the act. Notice the pattern, adjust your thinking. You enjoy fan fiction from the loving work from the heart angle. They are both paths you are comfortable with. Just try and pull out of the one which is not right for the situation, and set yourself in the one that is.

I'd hate for you to lose the whole reason you are into writing in the first place.

Well fine then. Alternate discussion topic! Every time Bon Bon has had a "major" role in Season 1, she has been a super snoot. Glaring down Applejack until she'd gotten almost an entire stock's worth of free apples, or her "And just who are you?" treatment of Rarity in Green Isn't Your Color. All of this makes me wonder: in contrast to all of our fanoning in these threads about how she and Lyra struggle against the Equestrian economy, chasing their dreams while holding each other tight, might they in fact be incredibly affluent? Does Lyra show up everywhere because she's actually an incredibly successful musician with money to travel and pay for cloud walking spells? Are they the Ponyville Nobility? =D

Now I'm not sure where I lean. This makes so much sense. I like my rough interpretation because I don't see it as them struggling, but striving. My Lyra and Bon-Bon are living the dream, carving a life for themselves one day at a time.
But being in Cloudsdale, being all over the world... Lyra is obviously well-off.

I am so almost conflicted. I think... I think these two can coexist though. The fruits of their labors pay off with their affluence in Ponyville, while they raise their little Tootsie Flute. Raised in Ponyville, so the affluence doesn't spoil the wee'n.

Y'know, with as much of a jerk as Bon Bon consistently is... I'm not even sure Lyra would be happy with her, sometimes. Like, as much as the fanon is that she's sweet and patient, the actual canon (if you accept that both times it was Bon Bon and not Background Pony #6) seems to paint her as kind of nasty and self centered.

Maybe she'd be better off successfully wooing Twilight after years of loving her from afar.

I dunno. I don't wanna rock the boat. Sometimes, I just have these moments; like, when I say, "Oh right, there's no indication that Soarin is actually a loyalty obsessed soldier in the show."

Had the same idea the other day. There totally needs to be an episode with a premise similar to the movie. He'll get turned into something repulsive that the other ponies fear, except the mane six. And they show him the error of his ways.

See, the odd thing is the term has never, in my experience, been applied to an actual mom. Mature, and all the other titles, are just ways of marketing pornography using women who don't meet magazine beauty standards.

And it's not a stunt, so much as an experiment, and an attempt to see just what ponies can do...

In a more selfish light, I'm hoping it might drag some people back and make me feel less like I ruined things for a bunch of people and drove them off. Makes me feel all Pinkamina.

I don't think you need worry. Honestly? I think the strain of such an unstructured RP, edging in on leisure time, wherein we all had to struggle to develop and make sense of some thread of continuity, wore everyone down. Anyone who left probably did so without any relation to tour actions at all. It was mentally exhausting because of how much effort went into a couple lines of text, which could be made obsolete at any moment (sometimes even before you write them)! So I think you are safe to relax in that regard.

Also, I haven't added a lot of new stuff to Semper Fi, but I did edit the last 10 pages I wrote. Oh the unnoticed typos.

I forgot to say something earlier, though! Try addition eyelids, higher on the outside than on the inside of the eye. It will add smugness with just a bit of color change. You'll have to get the angle just right, though, or it will look weird with the otherwise-sad looking eyebrows.

I dunno. That may be just the end result of their years of affluence. Bon-Bon let it go to her head. They know they've changed from their youth of hard work and passionate idealism. That's why they came back to Ponyville, hoping a good rustic upbringing in a wholesome(er) community would be good for tootsie.

Failing that... Bon-Bon is a fittin name for the background pony, as she seems to be based off of Peggy Bundy.

Nautili are awesome. I always wanted to live in the shell of a giant one and ply the sea for it's mystery and wonders. I also wanted to climb to the invisible, flying contents of hers gone by and see how each era of history played out in isolation.

But I'm rambling... Some Cephalopoda can be cute! Cuttlefish are cute.
I'm kidding myself. Thinking of a giant, rolling squid eye and the texture of that akin, sliding all mucal and gross as it tries to envelop you in a final embrace... Yeah. That's not right.

I think we should compare My Little Pony to Shakespeare as often as is possible, so, in that spirit, Rarity is a dead ringer for Helena from All's Well That Ends Well (except Rarity has the somewhat less useful skill of dressmaking rather than doctory). They both get what they want through cunning and manipulation, but at the same time they're genuinely well meaning and they go out of their way to help others in need. Blueblood is a bit like Bertram (though that's more of a stretch; if war exists in Equestria, I can't imagine Blublood going off to it), in that they both seem like the picture of chivalry from thirty feet away and the portrait of, uh, the opposite of chivalry from five.

It is shaping up well. I think adding in the comments Tirek makes during the debate scene helped. It made it more clear that he knows he has won, and that the ponies are only losing time with their arguing.

A few grammatical things I found:

" Whatever happens, ah love you."

You have a space between the " and whatever.

As the sounds of battle cries reached his ears, Soarin couldn't help look over his shoulder as they galloped; if he couldn't help, he could at least watch.

Might want to rethink a few of the words. You use "couldn't help" twice and then "could" one more time. I had to reread this once or twice to make sure you didn't accidentally restart the sentence halfway in.

Rainbow Dash cried out, "Look out below!"

I don't know why, but this bothers me somewhat. Probably the dialogue without introducing the character in any way, shape or form...actually, that is it now that I think of it. Rainbow Dash has been mentioned, but hasn't appeared once in the story up until this point.

The other ponies get a quick snippet, Rainbow Dash is introduced with her screaming and everyone looking up, without the reader looking up, so to speak.

Take from that what you want.

He'd take off, knock him out of his stupid little chariot, break that stupid trident over his knee, pound Tirek's face into hamburger and then he'd get creative. He wouldn't rest until he'd avenged Applejack.

The existence of hamburger opens up a big 'ol can of worms that I don't want to think about in pony. I suppose since hot dogs are physically mentioned in the show though, that meat products exist in Equestria.

Trixie: Prince of Bohemia (ends up with Twilight, now we have the necessary ingredients for Midnight )
Blueblood: The dickish bandit who tries to screw everyone over, only to get screwed over himself

And this is just from the American Military; I'm sure that there are plenty of titles from other nations, and even fantasy available as well.

Something I thought of recently (perhaps it has been addressed before):

If Celestia is Luna's older sister, and Luna was trapped in the moon for a thousand years, wouldn't that make Granny Smith REALLY REALLY ancient? Maybe it's an alicorn thing, but it seems kind of weird to me. If the aging process of ponies were the same for all races, Granny Smith would have to be at least two or two and a half thousand years old, and known about the times when the sun and the moon either didn't exist, or moved on their own? They don't really explain it in the show (obviously), but it leads to some interesting speculation.. Would ponies in late adulthood look as tall as Celestia? Even Luna looks a bit taller/lankier than the average pony..

Anyway, it's late and my head is muddled.

(Edit: I've been reading through The Old Stories, and I quite like it so far! I might post some critique for you, Thanqol. I'm only about halfway through it at the moment..)

Not necessarily. We can pretty much infer from the show that the life span of normal ponies is significantly shorter than that of Alicorns. If w e go by typical pony life spans, I could see her around 35 - 45.

I personally ship Colgate with a deep annoyance with Doctor Whooves, her master Time Lord trainer.

That's right. I ship her with her annoyance at someone. THAT'S HOW ANNOYED SHE IS.

Also the proper term for Celestia is Mature Beauty. Every equivalent saying (MILF, Cougar, etc) has negative connotations.

So in my sleep deprived stupor, sipping my coffee at work, I read that completely wrong, and nearly spat my coffee everywhere. I read "I personally ship Colgate with a deep annoyance with Doctor Whooves, her master." I really need to find a new morning ritual to wake me up... Ugh.

I just started watching the BBC series a little bit ago, and I decided that I would go through it alphabetically, so Winter's Tale is a while away. I'm liking it so far, though it's a British television program from the '80s, so they put that glass of skim milk in front of the camera (as is tradition).

Ok so i know this has been more then likely discussed, but due to the catatonic thread slow down, we need a new in depth topic. So therefore i ask three questions.

1. What events would you like to see in season 2?

2. if you could place ANY OC pony into the show who would it be, and how would you make their appearance work while staying under the shows parameters?

3. What background pony should become a regular part of the show? (luna and derpy aside because we know they get more screen time now) What should they do? what connection to the mane cast should they have?

And actually, I find that, hilarious and creative though it is, the ponies-are-made-of-candy theory to be very much mindscrew-y. I mean, that's kinda disturbing, on the level of ponies-turn-into-tress-when-they-die disturbing.

I have been writing this based on Aotrs Commander's idea of having Trixie as a bumbling hero. It kinda... morphed into a story of its own now though.

I had a quick read last night, but too late too comment; looks good. A couple of comments, though; there was one point (the description of one of the locations, the village I think) where you sentence ended apparently half-way through. You would also be better served by making sure everything is in past tense; a few bits of the side commentary (i.e. the bits that nearly but not quite Trixie's thoughts) that were in present tense, and it throws the rhythm off a bit. I find everything scans better if everything, even general statements about the world currently, are in past tense if everything else is. (Can't think of any exmaple off the top of my head, but no doubt you'll locate some yourself on another read-through.)

Aye, as soon as you said that I remembered not only that you've said it before, but I also agreed with you. so, that's my bad. You're totally as cantankerous as you say.

Also, 32 is just enough older that I do feel I need to defer. You lucked out, mate.

Secondly, our sensor logs indicate they were coated in some kind of bubble/coating which not only protected the ponies from flash-freezing in the depths of space, but allowed them to phase through the hull, cleverly dumping the kinetic energy from their speed into the phasing to kill their velocity (and so they didn't simply splash on the wall). Our high-tech armour is solid, but even it's not teleport-proof. In future, now that we know, the shields will easily take the impact.

Secondly, "hug" is not a word that can be used to describe being hit by umpteen ponies, moving at near sonic velocity. "Bodyslam" is closer, or possibly "Takedown" or "Doudle Edge." (It also hurt them waaay more than me!)

Umm...you realise Wraithfire is a fleet defense corvette, right? Which is for defending, y'know, a fleet, which consists of, by definition, lots of ships? All of which, aside from the Subterfuge Scoutships and Frostbeam Corvettes, are bigger to waaay bigger? I mean, it's not even like Spectral Glows are even front-line combat starships, they're escort vessels...

Her coat is that dark purple color in the background. My best friend made the avatar for me and SiuiS helped me come up with the design.

Well, considering the symbol of the Aotrs is two pairs of crossed blades on a spear, one cannot help but approve of a similairly understated design in the same vein. None of this over-complicated corners-cut-off-triangle-with-scorpion-tail in it, like the Brotherhood of Nod or something. Nice simple, and easy to slap on everything without having to go spare!

(I just realised; the Aotrs symbol would be Lord Death Despoil's cutie mark. I'll be sure to never mention that when I next speak to him.)

Of course, mature beauty has negative connotations, too. So I'll just say she is the pony equivalent of a beautiful woman pony Galadriel.
