Question, ponythread.

How important do you think a pony's cutie mark is to his/her life? Can you envision ponies completely ignoring their special talent and going off to do something else in their life? (eg. Earth pony with orange cutie marks goes into winemaking or something.)

There appear to be two schools of thought on the nature of cutiemarks!

The more cheerful school holds that whatever your mark is, it's what you'll want to do. If your talent is oranges, it's because you want it to be. If you were gonna go into winemaking, your mark would have always been winemaking. It is not possible to have a mark and not be happy about it-in fact, it might not be the realisation that you're good at it that gives you the mark, but the realisation that you like it.

The second school is differentiated mostly by one simple fact. Your feelings are irrelevant. Your talent is your talent and nothing you can do will change it. To make an example; let us assume that Applebloom eventually discovers a true and abiding love for carpentry. She plans to open a carpenting shop, make wooden items all day long. Under the first school, her talent would be woodwork. In the second school, this is not assured. It could be that cutie marks are in fact a genetic thing, in which case her cutie mark is essentially guaranteed to be something relating to apples. Alternatively, moving into darker theories, every cutie mark could be planned out by the Iron Hoof or some similar dark planners ensuring that every necessary position is filled. Applebloom would end up with whatever cutie mark is currently most needed in Equestrian society. Or, it could just be fate. Every pony has something they SHOULD be good at, but it isn't just pick up a saw and be good. You still need to practice, and if you decide it's not for you and learn kung fu instead, one day you'll be a sixth dan black belt, but the cutie mark you may or may not earn will be the destined carpentry you somehow missed.

Personally, the former fits the universe better, as it explicitly blocks out most forms of angst, except temporary one episode angst. The latter is better for grimdarks, but is kinda crushing in its utter futility.
