Sliders
No, nothing to do with Pitches or Delicious food stuffs.
About the Tv show. My friends and I, where wathing the series on Netflix. When a discussion arose. Saying you slide to a world, where your double was a chick, or vice versua. You sleep with.. well yourself. You get them pregnet, what would that child be. One of my friends says it would be a clone. I don't know if there is a word for what it would be. I mean besides a kid.
My long winded question is, What would be the term used for the child?

Re: Sliders
The offspring of yourself and yourself? I'd name it Kyberwulf 3: Revenge of the Kyberwulf

Re: Sliders
Well, I like 'Lenny' for a boy, or 'Susan' if it's a girl.
The kid would just be a kid. It's not a clone, s/he was born naturally. Now, there might be some birth defects, because you'd have had a child with someone who is virtually identical to you on a genetic level (there's a reason why incest is frowned upon, other than just 'ick!'), but the kid is still just a kid.
Ah, the wormhole appears to have actually taken you back through time, to a less enlightened era...I have a cookie now! (::) I've licked it, so no backsies.

Re: Sliders
Red Dwarf already did that plotline. Dave Lister went to parallel world, sleeps with his "opposite number- and Dave gets pregnant.

Re: Sliders
No, a child between yourself and yourself would not be a clone. A simple understanding of genetics would piece together why: Each parent has a pairs of each relevant gene. The child will have one gene from one parent and one gene from the other. The only way the gene would be identical is if the child gets the "first" gene from one parent and the "second" gene from the other. Other combinations, such as the first gene from both parents, would result in a child not "identical" to the parents.
For an example:
SpoilerLet's say you have a blood type AB. Your blood type has two parts - one genetic part A and one genetic part B. (I'm keeping the explanation simple here. I'm probaby misusing the terms terribly.)
When you have a child, they are only going to get one genetic part: either the A or the B. When you have a child with "yourself", there are four possible results:
A from one parent and A for another parent: AA (Type A)
A from one parent and B for another parent: AB (Type AB)
B from one parent and A for another parent: BA (Type AB)
B from one parent and B for another parent: BB (Type B)
Any self-reproduction would have a 50% chance of producing one identical set in a situation like this.
There are 23 different chromosomes which get matched up this way, and so the odds of all 23 coming up as identical to the parents would be 2^23 = 8,388,608-to-1 (unless I missed something).SpoilerThank you to zimmerwald1915 for the Gustave avatar.

Re: Sliders
Obviously, if one's a chick and the other's a dude, the DNA is not identical, though it might be close. So the offspring would inherit genes from both parents and not be an exact clone of either one. And as someone pointed out, there's a valid reason why inbreeding is frowned upon, so the kid would probably have some problems.
But I did enjoy Sliders, especially the first few seasons...

Re: Sliders
I don't really see the offspring being any different from the result of two identical twins (of opposite genders) having a child, as that's more or less what would be happening.
On a slightly related topic, has anyone seen the bit about the identical twin women who married identical twin men, and had children that were essentially genetically siblings, even though they had different mothers and fathers?

Re: Sliders
Well, HUB did show it though.
SpoilerMy main pet peeve is the episode where US became a monarchy when they lose the revolution (In reality, 13 colonies were ruled by Parliament). Either that or Democracy was abolished and turned into feudalistic empire
Still it predated the settings of Lelouch of Rebellion, minus pretty boy anti hero and robots.Badly drawn helmet avatar drawn by me.

Re: Sliders
The when premise of "it's you, but a girl" is inherently faulty to begin with. The sheer difference in available genetic information coming from the extra X chromosome would turn the She-you into a completely different person from birth..it's more than simple gender swap...
Except if she is a girl with XY chromosome. Damn it, I hate when I defeat my own arguments.

Re: Sliders
Basically she's identical to you except that you have a Y chromosome and she doesn't?
Well the child would be incredibly inbred. That might not be a problem depending on your genes and what deleterious alleles you are carrying. So the chances of some genetic disorders would be dramatically increased. Still likely their would only be minor problems. As long as the child didn't pull the same trick things would probably work out (inbreeding gets worse with every generation)
As for a special name? None. Plants self-fertilize all the time and it's offspring don't get a special name.Spoiler: I'm a writer!Spoiler: Check out my fanfiction[URL="https://www.fanfiction.net/u/7493788/Forum-Explorer"here[/URL]

Re: Sliders
Why pet peeve? The great thing about the early Sliders shows was the ''What If?'' part. Could the monarchy still rule the British Empire in the 20th century...well, yes, that could happen. Maybe Parliament was disbanded after they ''almost let the colonies rebel''? Maybe there never was a Parliament in that alternate world?
That was the great part about Sliders. They had some great alternative worlds. Sure the story was not always great, but that is true with any show.

Yeah, I hated it when they started with the cromaggs. It was more interesting to see what happen with alternate earths.
Also, as soon as Arteuro died.

Re: Sliders
Good show, until they introduced the Kromags. Then it wasn't about alternate Earths anymore but some stupid war with them. Sabrina Lloyd left. John-Rhy Davies left. It just wasn't the same. Jerry O'Connell's brother arrives then both of them leave. It wasn't the same show at all. I stopped watching because I just didn't care anymore.

Re: Sliders
Yeah, after the second season, FOX fired the creator and brought in their own people. That's about when the show's quality dropped into the toilet.
