What role do the Royal Pegasii Guards actually serve? The only time we see them in action is against Nightmare Moon, against whom they prove ineffective. Are they a military force that protects against some outside threat? We don't too often see them going and combating monsters, mostly just staying close to Celestia; if not outside threats, are there evil ponies who'd hope to somehow harm her? Or is their function primarily ceremonial at this point?

What role do the Royal Pegasii Guards actually serve? The only time we see them in action is against Nightmare Moon, against whom they prove ineffective. Are they a military force that protects against some outside threat? It seems to me like something her advisors pushed on her after the Discord incident, and maybe to make her a bit less of an unapproachable goddess.

There's really no telling. Equestria's tech base is internally inconsistent. I can definitely see there being tanks (after all, there's obviously enough of a tech base for Twi's basement laboratory), but at the same time it seems like there's no real reason outside of fanfics like mine for tanks to exist.

More likely explanation: the writers were fishing for a rhyme and didn't think anypony would look too closely at it.

I'd say it's primary ceremonial, but I'm sure they're properly trained to handle most non-superpowered threats.

I'd say personal guards, they were just woefully outclassed by NMM. And just because she has guards doesn't mean she's constantly under attack or anything, they probably spend most of their time on crowd control at events she attends.

I imagine them as something of an honor guard, meant mainly for ceremonies.

I might as well try this fan fiction writing thing for myself. This is the first (short) part of a MLP-Warcraft crossover fic involving the Burning Legion trying to conquer Equestria. It will not be Flintlocke-style meta-humor (with the possible exception of some of Pinkie's gags), and it will, perhaps surprisingly given the premise, not be "grimdark". This part has Wrath of the Lich King spoilers, and future parts will probably have more recent spoilers as well.

My Little Burning Legion - Prologue

”This wasn’t what I had in mind when they told me they had a “new and exciting employment opportunity”, you know.”

Mal’Ganis sighed. Once he had been one of the most feared nathrezim dreadlords of all, but not any more. Was it really his fault the Lich King decided to betray the Legion? No! And was it his fault his scheme to destroy the Lich King using the Scarlet Onslaught was foiled and he was forced to flee, only to later hear of the mortals destroying the Scourge without “his forces” anyway? Well, sort of, but still, he deserved better than this, he thought.

His voidwalker minion nodded. “I am inclined to agree with you, master. This place is far too… bright. Of course, that will make it all the more satisfying to corrupt into service of the Burning Legion.”

The dreadlord grinned. “Right about that you are, my minion, my ever loyal… what’s your name again?”

“Margrave Rm’kazh’aksharoth-nyx the Void-Veiled, Devourer of Illumination, Hegemon of the Third Shadow-Spire of the Haunted Realm, master.”

“…I’m going to call you Steve.”

“Of course you are, master.” Mal’Ganis couldn’t tell if the voidwalker was snarking at him or not, but he assumed it was.

“So, Steve, I understand you have gathered information about this place? Do share.”

“This realm is called Equestria. It is dominated by ponies. They are like small felsteeds, but…”

“Ponies? Seriously?”

“Oh yes. Disgustingly colourful ponies. There are three main kinds: earth ponies, the commoners, basically; pegasi, with wings; and unicorns, the spellcasters.”

“Well, that’s even more demeaning. They sent me to corrupt ponies? Well, better do it quickly so I can leave here as soon as possible and get a real assignment. What’s their military strength?”

“No real military to speak of, just a royal guard for the leader, and some capable fliers and casters without proper combat training. Oh, and…”

“Like I said, then, time to get going. Wait, you had something else to say?”

“Equestria’s ruler is an Eternal-level being who controls the sun itself (and that is not even mentioning her sister), and it is also defended by six very powerful champions who have, among other things, recently vanquished an Eternal spirit of chaos.”

“…and you didn’t think that was worth mentioning earlier?”

“Now that you mention it, yes. It probably was.”

Mal’Ganis sighed again. He was certain now, this wasn’t humiliation, it was punishment. Ah, well, it’s not like he had anything better to do. He began to cast a shape-shifting spell. Better start by gaining their trust.

Depends. I don't think for a unicorn, cloudwalking is a change to the unicorn's body (unless youre running some sort of Pegasus hoof charm) so much as changing interaction with clouds.

Whether or not this makes sense is another matter entirely. My brain is full of Magery. With dashes of pony.

That's how it appeared to work; the spell gives a Unicorn or Earth Pony a minor Pegasus ability temporarily. You aren't changing the clouds, after all; you're changing the pony.

Lauren Faust said that it's because Luna had regained her powers, but she also clarified that since she is no longer in charge it's just her version and not really canon. Still, it's the most official version we've got.

Aye. I'm still insure of how I feel about Faust not exercising word of god... It's strange. Terrifying.

I tried that with my not-girlfriend [insert obligatory frustrated sigh] a few weeks back. She didn't like it. She tried it, at least, and I think she was warming up to it, but she has a deeply ingrained hatred for anything "immature" or "childish", and she couldn't set that aside to enjoy ponies.

That's odd, because some of the draw is that ponies are neither childish nor immature.
We as a fandom can be :3 but I doubt she got that far...

I dunno. I couldn't get through it; some of the ideas are neat but lack execution. Or rather, they aren't elegant enough for me.

I grew up with the Unofficial Book of Sed though, so I already had a decnet framework for just making up what I needed. And a lot of social stigma, so that I never needed much.

Midnight only could stammer in response. The more and more time that passed, the more and more Sweetie Bell felt guilty for her outburst. Sure, she had been put through a lot overnight, and none of it had been fun. But Midnight meant the best, she was sure. Shoot, that filly had never done something with malintent in her life. Why would she start now? Sweetie could only grasp and struggle to understand though. What could possess Midnight to do what she had done?

She had been her Prince for the night? So she...

She felt the distinct brush of ivory against her own horn, and an instant later a spark of magic. It only took a few moments for all of the memories, the sights, the sounds, the smells, the emotions of two different ponies to flash through her mind, but to her she played out the evening in full twice.

Her eyes opened again, and as her vision slowly ceased to blur, she could have sworn that before her stood not an awkward little filly, but a regal and gallant Prince, straight from the halls of Canterlot Castle.

She staggered, trying to hold her balance. It was amazing how seeing things first hand could alter your train of thought. She heard the thoughts, felt the apprehension, yet... That fluttering in her stomach, the same one that Rarity had felt, the same one that Midnight had shared.

It was as though a light bulb had flashed on in her head.

So many emotions flowed through her at once; some which she couldn't even identify the source of. Indignation, Joy, Fear, Anger, Understanding, Sadness. But most of all, she felt love. The love that was special, that couldn't be described any other way. A special bond had been forged between Midnight and Rarity this evening.

She forced a tentative step forward as the world around seemed to cease spinning. She stopped, just long enough to stabilize herself; before enveloping the purple filly before her in a tight, close hug, the first pricks of tears making themselves known in the corners of her eyes. She couldn't come up with the words to describe what she had just seen, or what she had felt while witnessing every moment. She just understood.

Midnight wrapped her hooves tightly against Sweetie Belle, as the slightly older mare hugged her so tightly. The purple unicorn kept blinking, for tears were starting to well in her eyes. To pass the memories onto Sweetie, she had had to relive them herself...

She buried her head against Sweetie's neck, taking deep breaths, trying not to break down crying in an odd combination of joy of what had happened, and sorrow that it was now gone. But she was Midnight, a pony who was forever cursed-and blessed-to follow the beating of her heart. It did not take long for her to let out shuddering sobs, pressing her head tightly against Sweetie's neck, lest she awaken the two still slumbering so deeply.

It took a few moments, but Sweetie could feel the warm drips of Midnight's tears against her start to slow, as the young mare slowly recomposed herself. She lifted her head up, to look Sweetie in the eye.

"Thank you...about taking care of Spike." She started, wiping her eyes, which were puffy and red. "I'm really sorry about the trouble that I've caused you. I-I tried to be quiet about this, I knew it would be hard to explain..."

Well, that was incorrect. It would be easy to explain, now that she knew. She could summon forth that same spell, and give those memories to everypony. But..

"Now you know, you know why...those memories aren't for everypony." She continued. "I-I'm sorry that you've become our secret keeper. I'll...I'll find a way to make this up to you, Sweetie."

She bit her lip, looking downstairs.

"I-I'll collect Spike, our Mommas are probably worried sick about us..."
