Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
Seconding Porthos's suggestion of the quote about Xykon being chilly - there seems to be a lot of confusion on that point, and it would be good to have. Tells us a bit about how the Order has evolved in terms of combat preparedness and effectiveness, as well.
Guess I should tell my friends who are doing dissertations on science fiction that they're imaginary.
Influence questions are hugely interesting to me, personally, because I don't stick solely to medieval literature proper in my work. I dive into neomedieval things as well, whether they be modern revivals of medieval works, modern works adapting aspects of the medieval like Thor comics, or modern works playing in a pseudomedieval setting like Dungeons and Dragons or OotS. These questions are directly useful to me as a scholar. They provide some direction in terms of what kind of research I need to do, even if that direction is "don't look here, nothing relevant lies beyond."

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
Just to reiterate - please try to limit discussion ONLY to the suggestion of new quotes. In the new thread, we can discuss whether those new quotes will be included. For now, lets just focus on compiling them while I get the new index finished up.
"And yet, will we ever come to an end of discussion and talk if we think we must always reply to replies? For replies come from those who either cannot understand what is said to them, or are so stubborn and contentious that they refuse to give in even if they do understand." - St. Augustine

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
I agree with including "Xykon is chilly", it just doesn't seem to be clear to a lot of people.

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
I would note that science-fiction works don't even exist until Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein. I was told in my English classes that certain works don't even fall into science-fiction despite themes that point to the contrary, such as Woolf's Orlando: A Biography. I would also note that certain fantasies seem to possess Sci-Fi themes like Lewis Caroll's Alice novels.
I believe a number of the science fiction type works we read in high school like Orwell are not considered anywhere near on the same level as Milton. The laws of physics are not crying in a corner, they are bawling in the forums.

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
A case could be made that Johannes Kepler's Somnium was the first science fiction story:

though Frankenstein may have helped codify the nature of the science fiction novel.Last edited by hamishspence; 2013-11-06 at 12:03 PM.

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
Can anybody tell me what Science Fiction in literature has to do with the Giant's comments?
(No, I don't want to hear a bunch of posts saying "nothing")
EDIT: ... Maybe I should have made it clearer that I mean that this whole "it is possible to read Science Fiction in English class" and related stuff is just unneeded derailment to this thread?Last edited by ChristianSt; 2013-11-06 at 01:14 PM.

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
Some forumnites are interested in what works of literature influenced OotS. I suggested this might be because of English Literature lessons. It was claimed that such classes would not include science fiction. I took exception to such statement, and countered it.
Thus, relation is tangential, but clear: can science fiction novels be considered important enough to literature development that they should be considered when drafting influences of more modern works, such as OotS. We have conclusive answers to two such influences, but obviously if you don't believe that science fiction can even be considered, you would disagree.

Re: The Index of the Giant's Comments
The problem is we're derailing the thread with a discussion about what constitutes sci fi.
Also, agreed on the scarf quote. I thought it was obvious, but a lot of people seem to be missing it, presumably because one can also think of it as a face wrap to protect against sand, so the "scarf/chilly" angle is being missed. It should definitely go in.
