Depends what permutation of D20 you're using, of course some are better than others (and that's assuming you mean 3.x-derivative and not just a system that uses D20.)

As a general rule of thumb any modifier on a d20 less than +3/-3 is statistically meaningless.

I would debate that actually; standard critical hits are only a 5% chance and it also depends on your optimisations levels - every little helps.

My rule of thumb, for wargames is if it's less than 5% I don't care about it (I fact, I explicitly moved my entire starship combat system from D6 to D20 for that exact reason that +/- 16.7% was far too large a modifier). If you only care about +/-3 on D20, one has to ask why you're buggering about and not using D6s (which I don't find nearly granular enough). (For RPGs - well, mostly Rolemaster, which uses percentile, I'll go as far as 1%; nut even in my variant of that, most bonuses are in the multiples of 5.)

HOWEVER, for something like MLP, you may not need the same level of granularity (you're not going to be dealing with spells/equipment/levels (and thus incremental power increases)/combat to nearly the same extent), so some something like West End's Star Wars D6 (which I pirated once for superheroes) might be well suited. Of course, it all depends on what the DM is comfortable running.

('Twere it me, everypony'd be lucky to get away with playing D&D (i.e. 3.Aotrs) and not Rolemaster Pony...!)

Actually, I always thought the MAID system would make for a good Pony game, though it requires some modification (of course) to make it work for ponies. It's very simple to play, it's light-hearted, and it's not complicated in the least. xD

Counterpoints: when success is measured in degrees, the issues font matter and a game with lower variables still works. The trouble with "standard" d20 is that the end use function is supposed to be ([positive stuff] +/- [negative stuff]) + 1d20; the end result is supposed to be two ponies rolling against each other with maybe a slight advantage. And those situations are awesome! The standard rules are presented in a way that it utterly wrong at conveying it though.

Hm... This sounds familiar.

Second, the modifiers in Roleplaying is Magic swing from 1 through 15. If you have a skill which helps with your talent and a good base stat and some friends and it's really dramatic then you can do incredible things with roughly 50% of success. It's unlikely to come up unless forced, but considering that some tasks can have a success threshhold of 4/5, having only a "measly +2" isn't that big a deal. And on things where it would matter, you will have a minimum +6 - 12 anyway.

This is almost apropos of nothing though. I'm barely coherent and saw something on the Internet I had to set right. I'm sure a discerning group such as yourself know exactly how serious I am right now.

EDIT: this post is self defeating. I go in as if defending the linearity of d20 design while saying it only really works as a bellcurve- two dice in opposition with subtle modifiers. How I'm coherent enough for that, I don't even know.

I posted a link to it a few weeks ago. It's a bejeweled type thingy from what I can tell. The difficulty is fairly easy early on, I haven't hit the part where it gets challanging yet.

The Facebook page says they are planning to add an adventure mode or something like that soon, but it doesn't seem to be in there yet.

The artwork is adorable, and the intro music rocks.

I've had a really, really bad night at work, where my hopes of starting getting paid as a freelancer next week were very likely dashed in favor of more training shifts for a little while longer, so when I came here and read this, I actually broke down crying a little.

I hope things improve for you soon! And yeah the ending of that story was awesome. The whole thing was pretty incredible, I'd love to see it up on Equestria Daily. Ideally with some way to preserve the colorized text, I think that adds a certain something to the story.

Knowing what was said about the relationship to the princesses, let's get MYTHOLOGICAL

Before the time of Equestria, before the misrule of Discord, there was a world of old. Only whispers and shadows remain of it, and how it came to pass is a mystery, but after its fall magic returned.

Celestia and Luna are the daughters of Ioun, mistress of magic, and a mysterious being said to keep the distant stars alight. After their children were old enough to live alone, they departed to be with each other in the endless expanse.

Ioun's brother, however, fell in love with a mortal. He was doomed to watch his love succumb to age, along with his children and their children and so on. Unable to cope with the grief, the god secluded himself somewhere in the world, begging his nieces to watch after his family.

So, I own two cars. My current car, Seraya, a 2004 Chevy Impala, and my first car, Jade, a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. So, the Alero was in a wreck due to the Axle and Tire having a disagreement and divorcing on a 40 MPH corner, but we bought her back and fixed the Axle. She's just got some body damage on the right side. I've been leaving her at my parent's place.

Some dude, high out of his mind, comes down the driveway and steals the car (because my father is a knob and leaves the keys in all of our cars). Drives it a quarter of a mile, and drives it directly into a gas pump, blowing it up and fusing the vehicle to the pump.

I'm in complete disbelief.

Yet another thing I never thought could happen 6 months ago...

Funny story about that actually... So about a month ago my friend tried to say "Kumquat", but word derped and ended up actually saying "Kumplot". My reaction was so bad that I still hear them say that to this day. Generally in the context "IT'S ALL PART OF THE KUMPLOT!"

Poor old Dad. It doesn't help that our house was built by apparently built by people who had obviously heard about plumblines and and flat surfaces, but had clearly never seen one. (Our walls are about as straight as fanon Rainbow Dash is (i.e. only in certain places) - one of our dinign room walls required, when last done, nearly a inch thick of plaster at one end, so uneven it was compared to the door frame and the other side...)

Still, it's done now, so I now get to move 1000 starships to their new location...

Really? I didn't think the first three episodes of this season were amazing, they were pretty average, but the fourth episode is my favourite, and by a sizeable margin. I've watched it 4 or 5 times since last Saturday, and I think I've only ever watched the pilot twice up until now.

Personally, here are my thoughts.
Episode 1 and 2: Slightly above average.
Episode 3: Below Average.
Episode 4: Slightly Below Average

Of course for the average of S1, not for the average of children's animation today.

Hello, everypony! There have been a lot of questions about certain IRC features, and so I was convinced (by myself) to write up a list of FAQs to supplement Jade's guide. Hers includes everything you need just to connect, mine includes some slightly more advanced material. When this is reposted in the new thread, it can either be kept separate like this, or we could just combine them.

1. What does it mean to have a voice?
   
   There are a number of different designations that can be assigned to IRC users, to determine what privileges they hold in a channel. The designation you'll see most frequently is +v, for voice. This is represented in the list of people in the channel by a + before someone's name in mIRC, or the image of a speaker after someone's name on mibbit. What having a voice means is that the user in question can continue to chat unhindered even if the channel is set to +m, for mute!
   
   Setting a channel to mute prevents anyone without a voice from speaking. This is something that we might do if we were to ever be infested by spammy parasprites who were making it impossible to have real conversation, so that then only the ponies we know and recognize could talk.
   
   You can be given a voice by anyone with OP (operator) or H-OP (half-operator) status, the former represented by a @ (or a star in Mibbit), and the latter by a % (or half of a star). These are the people who can kick or ban disruptive users, change channel modes, etc etc. Ops have more privileges in this regards than hops do.
   
   
   
2. How do I speak using colored font? Or in bold, or italics, or underlined?
   
   This will vary depending on your choice of IRC client.
   
   In Mibbit, it's simple! You just use the "colours" button down at the bottom of the screen, below the chat bar.
   
   In mIRC, pressing ctrl+k will bring up a box showing a number of different colors. You can then choose one and it will automatically enter the appropriate color code. You can then type whatever it was you wanted colored. If you put a comma immediately after your color code, and then enter another color code, the first number will be the color of your text, and the second will be the color of your text's background. For example, ctrl+k - 4,1Testing would result in red font with a black background.
   
   In mIRC, you can also use ctrl+b for bold text, ctrl+i for italics, ctrl+u to underline, and ctrl+o to make any text entered after that point default to normal. Alternatively, you can highlight whatever it is you want changed with your mouse, before entering it, and then use the ctrl+k/b/i/u commands to change just that part of what you had written.
   
   If you use a different IRC client, please consult its documentation, or try Google. We can't help there!
   
   
   
3. How do I register my nickname?
   
   Registering your nickname is a requirement for you to be auto-voiced or auto-oped upon joining (otherwise, a moderator needs to do so manually). It also allows you to protect yourself from anyone who might try and "steal" it, using your name for themselves. All you need is an e-mail address; just follow these easy steps!
   
   First, type "/nickserv register *DESIRED PASSWORD* *your e-mail*". So, for example, "/nickserv register mypassword123 [email protected]"
   
   Make sure that the e-mail address you entered was valid. Your IRC nickname will be tied to it.
   
   Wait a few minutes, then go and check your e-mail. You should have one that looks something like this:
   
   
   
   It will be from [email protected], and the topic will be something following the format of "Nickname Registration (YourNameHere)." Just follow the instructions in the e-mail, and you're registered!
   
   After registering, you'll need to confirm yourself each time you log in, by typing "/nickserv identify *insert password here*". You don't /need/ to, but features like auto-op won't function unless you do.

Why?

Because I have an accidental Irish accent. I'm from southern California, so it's in no way legitimate. And as soon as I hear an accent, I have an accent.
And I know for a fact¹ that it doesn't fool anypony. Worse- what happens if I fake-irish at an Irishman? They'll think I'm mocking them! It'll be disastrous. And I'm no. Even aware of it half the time. >.<
So a lady with a thick English accent asks me for help finding HWY 4 east, and all of a sudden I had to choose between looking inept or like a jackaninny.

¹: oddly untrue. I've never been called on having a 'fake' accent. I've been asked about who in my family is Irish/Scottish, even Bu folks from Europe. The worst I got was a cop asking if I was Canadian.
And I live in fear that they all walk away shaking their heads and were just too polite to say anything.

Huh. I've got a similar thing going on. I had to force an accent to play Applejack in a D&D campaign, and I said I was only gonna do it once. Apparently I did it well, and now for some reason I find myself slipping into it in everyday conversation. For whatever reason my body treats it as normal; once in a while it takes me effort to NOT speak in it.

So, I own two cars. My current car, Seraya, a 2004 Chevy Impala, and my first car, Jade, a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. So, the Alero was in a wreck due to the Axle and Tire having a disagreement and divorcing on a 40 MPH corner, but we bought her back and fixed the Axle. She's just got some body damage on the right side. I've been leaving her at my parent's place.

Some dude, high out of his mind, comes down the driveway and steals the car (because my father is a knob and leaves the keys in all of our cars). Drives it a quarter of a mile, and drives it directly into a gas pump, blowing it up and fusing the vehicle to the pump.

I'm in complete disbelief.

Yikes, I'd be stunned too. That's the kind of thing you expect to see in TV shows not real life. Did the moron remove himself from the gene pool?
