Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Dakaran making some monster minis in no way invalidates this thread. Everyone is free to make minis, and I personally like seeing multiple versions of a given creature -- sometimes the pose or coloring one artist chooses doesn't fit my mental image of the creature as well as what another artist chooses. We should encourage, not discourage, artists adding to the thread!

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Yup, I've been just crazy busy with life in general and I've been away at GenCon for the past many days so I just unfortunately haven't gotten in here to do a proper update. Thanks for your patience everyone. While yes, I have started a blog for print and play game content (with a primary focus on D&D minis) I have every intention of keeping this thread alive. Savannah's point is a great example of why I want to keep this rolling.

I've updated the gallery with the lastest images and updated the download folder to include those new images as well.
Tannhaeuser, as usual, thank you for all your contributions! The Succubus, I appreciate you adding your avatar! Kymme with no less than six new monsters; a great addition!

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Finishing up the series of giants from the original Monster Manual, the Cloud Giant. Tramp's depiction was itself apparently based on a turn-of-the-19th-century illustration of "Jack and the Beanstalk":
SpoilerGiant (Cloud) (Large)
SpoilerGiant (Cloud) (Small)
By the way, Dakaran, did you see these I had already done? I noticed they weren't among the others. I didn't know if you had overlooked them, or didn't like them, or thought we had enough giants, or what.
Oh, and Sgt. Pepper, I really like your tokens. I think I especially like the elves.“But he had not that supreme gift of the artist, the knowledge of when to stop.”

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Kymme, thank you so much for your wonderful second batch of tokens!
Sgt. Pepper, welcome to the party! Your tokens are magnificent, if I do say so. In particular, your bards, elves, and skeletons are really top notch.
Tannhaeuser, I am terribly sorry. I'm not sure how, but it seems that I had missed that subset of tokens. I certainly otherwise would not have excluded them. Thank you so much for your continued support!
So, update 1.6 of the Monster Manual Token Download is up and includes all tokens thus far posted to the thread (unless I've overlooked something - if so please let me know). The Art Gallery has also been updated accordingly.
Thank you all again! I'm sure there are a great many players happy to be able to use your tokens in their games.Print and Play Minis | iheartprintandplay | Retired as of 2018, but my entire public collection of monsters, PCs, NPCs, environment pieces, and other supplements are still freely available (see links in top sticky post)

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Hey, no problem, Dakaran; I was only wondering.
Does anyone have any requests for some Old-School D&D monsters? Y'know, like from Monster Manuals I and II and the Fiend Folio (or possibly even the Deities & Demigods handbook)? I do enjoy doing these.
All the best, all!

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Tannhauser: How about a Behir? Or a Catoblepas? (I really love your stuff! Top Notch!)
Meltheim: How about: Thri-Kreen (of various classes), Elves (because they're so different from all other elves), Gith, Belgoi, Braxat, Gaj, Kank, Crodlu (and maybe Erdlu and Erdland?), Inix, Meikillot, Rasclin, Kirre, I could go on....

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Thanks for the suggestions Torath! I made a horrible Kank and a few Spirits of Athas, and I will probably jump on that list soon. I also whipped some elves up but I am running out of space on my imgur account so I will have to find another place to store them for sharing.

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Okay, Lord Torath, you asked for it, you got it (and thanks, by the way, for your flattering and wholly undeserved compliments) -- from the original Monster Manual, the Catoblepas:
SpoilerCatoblepas (Large)
SpoilerCatoblepas (Small)
I have to admit, I don't think I did a very good job at all with this one. On the other hand, it's an ugly beast at best, and I did try to make it at least interesting, if not attractive. (The mane of hair, by the way, comes from the gnu by way of Topsell.) Oh, well!
SpoilerPsssst! Yamilov, I'd love to see your Marilith, but you will have to upload it to an image-hosting site (like Flickr or Photobucket) before we can see it -- and don't forget to make sure to put around the link!Last edited by Tannhaeuser; 2012-10-19 at 11:32 AM.

Even more fun to say is (as if introducing the two monsters to each other), "Behir, Catoblepas -- Catoblepas, Behir!" It has kind of a swing to it. "Behir, Catoblepas -- Catoblepas, Behir!"
First appearing in the first edition adventure module, "The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth" (1982), and the year after in Monster Manual II, may I introduce to you the Behir!*

Love the Behir! Now to paste it into my Draw Your Own publication, and it can surprise my kids when they finally make it to the Isle of Dread!
(TANNhaeuser BEhir CaTOBlePAS! Kind of a nice rhythm...)
So.... want to do any dinosaurs?
Sgt. Pepper, I love your tokens! The Skeletons Rock! And I love your Placeholder!

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
You really think so? I kind of like the squared ends, myself, particularly for the fingers/toes, though I suppose it does look a bit strange on the tail-end. Hmmm...
What I am really beginning to wonder is whether I should start thinning my lines more. I mean, I like the thick black outlines, but they are a bit un-Burlewvian, aren't they? Hmmm, again...
And now, another monster. First appearing in 1983 in the second Monster Manual, the Vargouille!
SpoilerVargouille (Large)
SpoilerVargouille (Small)
Dinosaurs, L.T.? Hmmm... hmmm... and a reiterated hmmm...Last edited by Tannhaeuser; 2012-10-26 at 06:49 AM.

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Or you could do something else. Maybe a Brain Collector (X2 - Castle Amber)? Or a Kopru (X1 - Isle of Dread)?
Or, you know, something from the Monster Manual? Maybe the Fly-Demon (Chasme?), or a Nycadaemon (D3 - Vault of the Drow)...
(I'm just shamelessly suggesting monsters I will probably be using sometime in the future... )

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Here we are again! Still no dinosaurs, technically, but here is something very, very close -- appearing first in the Dungeons & Dragons Supplement II: Blackmoor (1975), and subsequently in Monster Manual I (1977) and the 1980 module Isle of Dread, the Plesiosaurus:

Next, in honor of Halloween, the spoooooky Apparition, first appearing in 1981's Fiend Folio:

Re: (Monster Minis!) The OotS-Style Monster Manual Art Project
Great looking Pleisiosaur! And now I need to go look up the Apparition! I love the transparent effect of the robes.
And no rush on the dinosaurs. My kids are currently mired in the Caves of Chaos (ambushed byknollsgnolls and orcs) and show no signs of wanting to resolve the battle. And after that they'll be swooped off to Castle Amber on the way to Specularum to get a ship. So I've got some time before I need dinosaurs.
Rakasta, though, they'd be pretty cool!

Oo! Tannhaeuser! Getting back to the Monster Manual, how about a Remorhaz? I seem to remember a drawing of one of those with a pair of feet sticking out of its mouth.
