Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Today was an eventful day...but a long time coming...
I quit my Ph D... primarily because I was no longer interested in it. I still love birds, but the other components became ever more dominant until the ornithological component appeared miniscule. I felt extremely relieved when I said to my supervisor that it was my final decision and the whole thing went very smoothly.
Now to pack up and head back East... to friends and family :)...

Oh well... You've still got most of a Ph.D. That more than qualifies you for all manner of things, right?

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Thoughts go out to anyone who's battling Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald in QLD. To the point at the moment that it's constantly raining heavily in Brisbane and Elemental's area has tornado warnings.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
WHAT?!?! Tornado warning? Why did no one tell me?
And a tropical cyclone would definitely explain all this rain and wind...Mauve Shirt, Savannah, Gnomish Wanderer, Cuthalion and Smuchmuch get cookies for making me avatars. (::)

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Sorry to double post, but...
Info on Cyclone Status:
SpoilerIDQ20032
Bureau of Meteorology
Queensland Regional Office
Transmitters serving the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast forecast districts are REQUESTED TO USE THE STANDARD EMERGENCY WARNING SIGNAL BEFORE BROADCASTING THIS MESSAGE.
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
for DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL, ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES and DANGEROUS SURF
For people in the
Wide Bay and Burnett,
Southeast Coast and parts of the
Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.
Issued at 12:39 pm Sunday, 27 January 2013.
Synoptic Situation:
At 12pm EST, the centre of ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald was located approximately 45km north northwest of Miles and 75km south southeast of Taroom. The system was moving south southeast at about 30 km/h and is expected to contract into New South Wales on Monday.
Reports of destructive winds and possible tornado activity occurred over northern parts of the Sunshine Coast this morning. Double Island Point recorded a wind gust of 122km/h at 10:45am. These conditions are expected to continue over the far southern Wide Bay and Southeast Coast district, extending west to the eastern Darling Downs and Granite Belt. Destructive wind gusts in excess of 125 km/h and further tornadoes are likely, and this could cause significant damage or destruction to homes and property in localised areas.
Current radar imagery shows an intense band of activity on the Sunshine Coast, mostly between Tewantin and Caloundra, moving southward.
Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is expected to continue over the Wide Bay and Burnett district and Southeast Coast district, extending west to include the Great Dividing Range and the Granite Belt. Six hour rainfall accumulations in excess of 100mm are likely. This could lead to rapid river and stream rises. Widespread 24 hour rainfall accumulations in excess of 250mm are likely.
Currently, the heaviest rain is located on radar inland of the Sunshine Coast and near the southern border. Cooloolabin Dam has recorded 61mm in the hour to 12:30pm. Cooran has recorded 136mm and Borumba Dam 113mm since 9am. In the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, widespread areas through the Wide Bay and Burnett district recorded 300 to 400mm. Walla on the northern Wide Bay recorded 480mm.
Water levels on the morning high tide are likely to exceed the highest tide of the year about coastal and island locations from Burnett Heads to the New South Wales border on Monday. The sea level is likely to rise above the normal tide and the exposed beaches will experience damaging waves and flooding of some low lying areas close to the shoreline.
Dangerous surf conditions, with significant beach erosion, are expected along the coast from Burnett Heads to the New South Wales border during today and Monday. This includes Hervey Bay and northern parts of Moreton Bay.

I feel bad for being in Perth and being utterly fine. This has been an oddly mild summer. Of course, we still have February to go, but...

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
Wind and rain for a couple days straight. Lost power at least twice, but only for a few seconds each time. Though it was fun seeing the lights flicker.
Unfortunately, part of our LAN network took the brunt of all the surges and as such, the entire network was down so there was Internet since Saturday.
Also, I went into the city today for a dental thingy, several traffic lights near the hospital were out. But everyone seemed to act sensible around the intersections.Mauve Shirt, Savannah, Gnomish Wanderer, Cuthalion and Smuchmuch get cookies for making me avatars. (::)

I still have no power... The next door neighbours have very kindly let me use theirs, though, so at least I've saved the fridges and can charge my electronics and can cook a bit.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
I feel like there was a bit of a conflict of interest there
Oo, Black Books.
But more importantly, as long as this is back: TOTALLY GUY IS COMING TO AUSTRALIA! LIKE, IN TWO DAYS! He'll be hanging mostly around Brisbane, Coffs Harbour region, Sydney area and then Brisbane again. Anyone interested in meeting him should let him know. If you get a chance, you should have him run a game for you, he's pretty good. The Iron Avatarist Hall of Fame!

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
That's okay, I've got no clue either.
Guessing based on the name implies that it's a television series about a guy who inconveniences people he doesn't like. But that's so ridiculous I don't think it's right.Mauve Shirt, Savannah, Gnomish Wanderer, Cuthalion and Smuchmuch get cookies for making me avatars. (::)

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
It's a sitcom about people who run a bookstore (I believe the store is called called Black Books). I only remember a tiny amount of literary humour, think it was mostly character-based. I liked it when it was on TV here, but I don't have a TV any more. (That is, I'm pretty sure I've seen it on free-to-air TV, years ago. Was it on SBS?) iView, eh? I might have to look into that....
Also, ello! Don't think I've been in this thread before. Not exactly up for meeting overseas visitors yet, but I'll get settled in soon enough :)I'm pretty much the opposite of concise. If I fail to get to the point, please ask me and I'm happy to (attempt to) clarify.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
It's a comedy starring Dylan Moran as a cynical alcoholic named Bernard Black who owns a bookshop (the titular Black Books) but loathes his customers. It also stars Bill Bailey and Tamsin Greig as Bernard's friends Manny and Fran.
It's really good.

Re: Australasia in the Playground V
I don't recognise any of those names, but it sounds rather funny. Not that I have any iView, i-anything to watch it on...
I wonder if Quickflix have it? I have Quickflix... though my current obsession is watching every TV/film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes I can get my hands on. And I have a friend hounding me to watch Season 8 of Supernatural...

ABC iView is entirely free to any Australian.
Everyone who has never seen Black Books should go and watch at least the first episode here now. Also, check out the other shows on iView here.

Oh, it's an ABC thing? I saw the 'i' in front and just assumed Apple.
I shall add it to my list of things to watch.
