I'm sure I'll learn the secrets of the judge's delay this time, however I can't help but notice that Halloween hasn't been updated, and it's been 2 months. That's not unheard of, just wondering if it'll be up anytime soon.

It's trophy making. I keep telling Ruki to make some standard trophy cup images to use each time, unless someone feels particularly inspired to make custom ones, but he's a bit of a perfectionist.

I've got everything I need for This is Halloween right now, I just finished them. Now I just need a mod to clear the Thread Necromancy before I bump the thread(or else tell me to start a new thread).

It's not that, Happy. I just don't want to give people rushed and ugly trophies, I feel they deserve a little better.

Hmmm... Also nice. Well, if that one's not gonna be entered in the actual contest, could I ask that you spoiler it? Otherwise it's a litle distracting when judging.

A lot of excellent pieces this month! This competition interested me enough to dabble a bit after many months of dried up inspiration.

However, I'm stumped on finding a way to produce digital art... I have a paper sketch drawn but no working scanner, as well as no experience in any drawing program other than Windows XP MS Paint. (I downloaded Paint.NET before, but it did not appear to be compatible with Windows 7.) I have no idea why I'm saying this. 0_o

The GIMP and Inkscape are your two best bets if you don't want to spend cash on software.

The GIMP is a sort of free Photoshop, as it uses Raster Graphics, and is quite close to the way Photoshop works, with layers, filters, masks, and so on. Inkscape is closer to Adobe Illustrator in that it's Vector Graphics (and seems to be preferred by most people on this site.

That aside, if you already have access to Photoshop, it might be your best bet. Inkscape takes some practice if you've never used Vector Graphics before, and the GIMP, while an excellent application, falls a little short when compared to Photoshop.

You can get a digital copy of your drawings with a digital camera or smartphone. And in additional to GIMP and Inkscape, you could try MyPaint. It's free and available on all the major OSes. It emulates the traditional tools of the artist: oil, watercolours, pastels, charcoal, chalk; so you might find it easier to work with.

I have certainly heard of these programs before, but I don't have Photoshop or AI. I think I'm more comfortable with raster based programs rather than vectors, which is one reason I've avoided Inkscape all these years. Also, I don't think my old computer could handle Inkscape.

I have a digital camera, but always assumed cameras do not work well to capture something on paper, because of ... aspect distortion? Is that the right term? Also, I realized I can use the scanners available at our school and save them on a flash drive.

I'm most familiar with tools like the pencil that simply replace the pixels the cursor moves over without any fancy blending or transparency... MyPaint sounds confusingly complicated by simulating real life media. If I remember, I'll take a look at it later.

There is some skew distortion if you don't get the camera exactly over the centre of the image.

If you want to get serious about drawing on a computer, get a graphics tablet or a graphics tablet-screen hybrid. I use a track ball, an older version of this. But then I don't do much drawing, so it and Inkscape fulfills my needs.

A Wacom Bamboo One tablet. Always been better at pen-like tools than mouses, but I presume it could be a matter of what I am used to.

Then you could just use good ol' Paint (or whatever your OS supports). I once saw a video of someone creating a really good replica of Mona Lisa using Paint. It all depends on talent. For example, I couldn't create anything useful even with the most sophisticated software. I like Inkscape because with vector graphics, it's pretty easy to replicate OOTS style. It's mostly simple geometric shapes.

Please don't quote entry images. It makes it harder for the judges.
I'd also quite like to see Care Bears vs. My Little Pony - especially specifically the '80s toys (Braided Beauty was my favourite :3).
