Re: Tools of Chaos
Do they have workshops? I'd like to see them. I happen to be in the market for magical items.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Magic is not encouraged passed healing magic and some illusions, so magic items are limited to those who practice magic and craft said items. However, if you wish to study some spells, or want to know some history, there is a scholar who will answer questions until you beg him to stop.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Yes, let's talk to him. He may know why our maps don't see your valley.

Re: Tools of Chaos
When you get there the scholar launches into a long story to answer your question, beginning with a goblin war 700 years ago, the settlement that was reached with the goblins, the objections some others had with the arrangement the halflings and the goblins came to, and finally the cleric who was strong in the stone domain responsible for way the mountain was excavated on the outside. This brings him to the theory he has that if the area does not appear on any maps it is because the cleric of legend asked the stone to not show the area to the outside world and it complied.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Ask if the scholar knows what motivated this cleric to excavate the mountain.

Re: Tools of Chaos
The peace agreement that the halflings and goblins came to angered other extremists of their races and started a war. The goblins were particularly nasty. The plataue outside was made so that an army could come to the mountain but have only one or two ways in. The whole area was removed from maps to prevent an enemy from being able to get any intelligence on the area. Once a map touches stone, our part is erased.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Ask him if he minds me writing down his story. If he doesn't, I'll record it. Then ask if he's ever heard of Goremaputnic or similar.

Re: Tools of Chaos
He is fine with getting a training scholar to transcribe the story for you. He has heard of Goremaputnic, but only in passing related to the empire he had. All that he tells you is not any more significant than what you already know.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Do you know where this empire was located, or what it was called?

Re: Tools of Chaos
"The name was Barbarian Empire, first out of derision, but the name stuck. We are at one of the frontiers of the old empire. It covered almost the entire surface of the continent, and extended underneath in many places because of treaties. Goremaputnic was a great warrior, but understood the use of diplomacy." From a quick summary of your travels you are told that everywhere you have been was part of the empire at its peak.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Pull out my copy of Chosen of the Token, and turn to the pages with the map of Cronaria. Ask if he recognizes any of the landmarks so I can go there.

Re: Tools of Chaos
The scholar is able to help you put some of where you have been onto a map of Cronaria. Borders have changed many times since then. A, B, and C all contain other places that don't appear on the map.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Well, C is closest, so let's head there. Ask the scholar his name, bow in thanks, collect the transcription of events, and take my leave. Head for C.

Re: Tools of Chaos
C is over a mountain range, with the most direct route going through the True Sons territory, and into the other half of the split kingdom. It resides in what is currently orc territory. You follow a road the scholar shows you that has mostly abandoned, but will take you to the town of Riveroverunderdale within 18 hours of marching.

Re: Tools of Chaos
You emerge in the night and walk through the mountains and forest on what was once a road but is now more of a wide foot path. From a distance you see the city, nestled between two impassable mountains with a river flowing through the center of it. When you reach Riveroverunderdale the city is closed. No one except official deputies are allowed in or out. The guards are cagey on what is going on.

Re: Tools of Chaos
The guard answers From what I have been told it is a worker uprising. Just then, the gate is struck by something and smoke starts rising behind it. Soon the gate starts flaming. The guards try to put it out, but the stone walls ensure there is no danger of the fire spreading.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Assist the guards in their fire fighting efforts, fetching water if there is any nearby.

Re: Tools of Chaos
The fire is put out, but the gate is fragile at best. The gate is struck again from the inside, followed by two more blows, the last of which shatters it. There a human sized pile of cobblestones stands and advances towards the nearest group of guards who draw their weapons, but have looks of terror on their faces. Roll initiative.

Re: Tools of Chaos
You won initiative and the guards don't look like they are used to fighting monsters. The earth elemental continues its slow advance. You are now within 20 feet of it.

Re: Tools of Chaos
I need to find the villian that summoned this abomination. but I cannot allow it to cause harm. Move toward the elemental, drawing my sword, and calling lightning from the blade. Attack!

Re: Tools of Chaos
Angus takes a step back, shaking his head to clear the buzzing. He mumbles a plea to Kord. An eerie mist rises from the ground, obscuring all vision.
Read: I just cast obscuring mist.

The mist arises, doing its job of obscuring. The elemental attacks again.

Just when you think you have had it the summoning spell wears off, leaving you a greater understanding of what a pressed apple feels like.

Re: Tools of Chaos
Unless he moved, he can't see me, and I'm out of range of melee unless he has a reach weapon. Even if he moved, he has a 20% miss chance.
