Default Meanwhile, I've been sick and look all washed out... but this is about the bird.

I adopted an old neglected budgie about a month ago, and have been trying to socialize her. I got her out of her cage on my finger for the first time tonight which is huge progress. Her name is Mabel. Isn't she a sweety?

That is one adorable budgie. I can remember the last time I held a bird in my hand... It was at a bird sanctuary designed to allow many of the birds to fly around (some were in cages because they'd be too mean to the other birds though).

Anyway, back on track... Seeing a blue budgie always makes me feel slightly sad for some reason...
    Still beautiful though.

Why does a blue budgie make you feel sad? Do you feel like they left behind their joy in life with their yellow pigment when they departed the Australian grasslands? That their old kin would drive them forth if they decided to return?

I think it's because they have no hope for survival if they're born in the wild.
No blue coloured budgie has ever lived to adulthood in a wild setting.

The blue trait is a recessive trait that can be found in wild budgies.
Without going into genetics in order to explain its rarity; I'm just going to say that the reason the trait is only seen in captive budgies, is in the wild, they rely on their colouration to protect them from predators. Remove the camouflage, and the young are easily found and killed.
It's terribly sad, but nature is often cruel.
The reason why blue ones are relatively common in captivity is because the blue trait was often bred with preference over the green one.

She is singing more. I've been playing a lot of Bach for her -- she doesn't respond to fugues, but she tweets along with the preludes and inventions readily.

(She also growls when I kiss her. )
A budgie accompaniment would be very sweet. Very vernal. And now you've made me look up budgie videos, and I want one for a companion.

She sounds like a girl after my own heart.

Unless you've bewitched my eyes with your verse, I've seen no evidence that suggests you aren't handsome! Though perhaps I can't speak about posting photos; I'm much too shy to even consider it.

    Aww. That is terribly sad. ;___;

Speaking of budgie mutations that can only survive in captivity, have you heard of feather dusters?

You are kind; and I will respectfully refrain from encouraging you to reveal yourself.

You could adopt! And within a few weeks I'm sure he or she would be sitting on your shoulder nibbling your ear and eating curly parsley from your hand. (This is my favourite budgie video thus far)

In my humble opinion, I find that letting its feathers stay at that length is a touch cruel...
I mean, it doesn't look like it can fly, or see, or preen itself properly...
I'm against breeding an animal solely for appearance, I just don't think it's right. At least with tame blue coloured budgies, they have no harmful traits unless you release them into the wild. Which you shouldn't do with a tame bird anyway.
Leaving the potentially controversial issue behind...

That is probably much too high maintenance for me and would probably scare the cats. And it's slightly creepy...

I think it's pretty, but I agree with everything else and feel sorry for them. They are blind and cannot fly or preen as you say, or even move around much; and all the complications from the long feathers mean they only live a year at most. For these reasons people don't really breed them on purpose. Fortunately it's incredibly rare.

All the same... I wish I could touch one. They look soft.
