The Dyviil looked closely at spot 14, likely the last time anyone would do so. He shook his head, and looked disapprovingly in Tom the Mime's direction.

Day Twenty:

Through the glass, Onime No Enishi looked. Sad eyes, cold hands. The slowly dipping sun close to the horizon.

The small teardrop emblem in the palm of his hand felt like ice beneath his clutched fingers, the slow drip of the now banished rain occasionally disturbing the complete calm.

'Too peaceful, isn't it.' The sudden voice, breaking the silence, does nothing to perturb the quiet calm of the man in the seat by the window. 'There isn't anything such as too peaceful. Those who follow my path would take peace any chance they got.'

'Then you should be glad for what I've done.' 'No, no. I'm not. Evil isn't undone with evil.' 'So you'll beat me down with riddles?'

Laughing, Onime shook his head. Twirling the teardrop softly in his palm, he slowly stilled again. 'Why do you think I intend to 'beat you down'? I am in no shape to fight a warrior, let alone a man with demonic powers.' 'And yet you hunted me still.'

Onime didn't reply, merely humming as he looked out the window. After a moment, then two. Then three of no reply, the man growled. 'Well, if you have nothing more to say....'

A moment later, the demonic blade stuck through the back of the seat, and through it's occupant, leaving Onime with his head lolling back, but no other sign of his sudden demise. Except, perhaps, a small smile on his face.

The man turned and walked away, unaware as behind him, the teardrop in the now dead hand slowly slid out, dropping slow motion towards the floor. Then, suddenly stopping, and evaporating into mist....

C'nor, TBFProgrammer, and Gray Mage entered the vault. Suddenly they were at an audition for parts in a play of A Christmas Carol. C'nor despite actually being a ghost was deemed too poor an actor to portray one of the ghosts and got stuck with being an extra. TBF was clearly a shoe in for the Ghost of Christmas Future. And Gray Mage was cast as Scrooge McDuck.

Night Twenty:

The man crept forwards in the shadows. The small tower in the center of the prefecture had drawn a lot of interest, but the blackened corpses outside had scared off all but the most daring.

And even they rarely came back out of it.

Shaking the sweat from his nose, the man glanced around the corner. The echoing screams from below muffling the slight slip and grate of his uneven boots against the stone.

Breathing harshly, fearfully, he crouched lower, and dashed fast towards the other side of the opening. There was a passage on the other side he was aiming for, attempting to avoid the lone guard standing down the hallway.

Grinning, congratulating himself at reaching the top floor, he slowly eased up the side staircase, his hands tensed, his eyes warily ahead.

Suddenly, a small burst of movement flashes ahead of him, and he freezes like a rock. Only to release an almost inaudible sigh of relief as the mouse made itself known in the shadows. Chittering and shifting the gravel just enough to scare him.

Grinning ruefully now, at his own reactions, he eased further inwards, glancing around the edge of the staircase.

There was no one in sight. The master was downstairs causing that infernal screaming. And the guards weren't allowed on the top floor.

The grin widened. He'd made it. There was nothing. NOTHING in the way of him and whatever treasures he could find. The entire master's treasury, maybe?

Careful to stay quiet, he discarded visual stealth in preference of speed, wiping the rolling nervous sweat off on a rag as he moved casually towards the central chamber of the top floor.

And then.

He paused. Half in awe. Half in horror.

For in the next room sat a book. A single book. Open. The pages filled with symbols he couldn't even begin to describe.

Drawn, ever closer. He inched almost horrified towards the book. Taking in the open pages. Eyes glued to the symbols that sent his mind spiraling backwards and forwards.

Frozen in time, he fought a momentary battle with his own mind. And then, with a wrenching shudder, he grabbed on side of the book and slammed it closed.

Then his whole body convulsed. And again. Shuddering, he fell to the floor. The very symbols on the pages had sent his mind recoiling. But then, as if suddenly aware of where he was, he forced his body still. And stood up.

And then, it occured to him. The screaming had stopped. And the laughing began. Standing at the doorway, the towering figure of the master, eyes almost demonic, tossed the crumpled and battered body down in front of the intruder.

The man's eyes were fixated on his former friend's tortured carcase. Frozen still in absolute horror. Each small slice on the skin, or mark where a spike punctured his friend's body from fore to rear.

The small burn marks that tinged every inch of the body. The lacerations that could only be caused by spiked whips.

Frozen, then once again, with a shudder, the man screamed, and turned. And ran. Laughing, the master merely watched him go, the terror streaming out in an almost physical form as the tears ran down his cheeks. The reek of the blood on his hands, from where he touched his friend's face, nauseated him so that he barely held back from throwing up.

A moment later, he barrelled through the window of the top tower, screaming as he plummeted.

Above, the master merely smiled, waving at the small servants to carry the body away as he prepared for his dawn rituals...

And down below the man lay in the fortuitous bale of hay, staring blindly at his hands...

Day Twenty-One:

Two surfed along the energy stream, floating in the air and using the inherent energy of this dimension to keep them aloft. When you could tap into that 'magic', it made some things so much easier.

Besides that, it meant that instead of always wanting to, the two could now do magic. And they took advantage of this fact, why wouldn't they? After all, power is just a means to power. If you don't use power, why would or should you even have it?

The leader smiled, fluttering his cape as he landed near the furtive figure in a cloak, crouching over a pile of waste and junk. As the other landed next to him, he walked up rather un-cautiously to the man. The small snake of whispers drifting to the self-stylised 'mage'.

'It's not here. I told you it was in that tower.' 'But no one has shown the usual signs of possessing it.' 'The "usual signs"? You know what it is, there is NOTHING regular in its reactions.'

'That doesn't make any more sense though than--' Suddenly cutting off in mid speech, the figure whirled around and stared quietly at the figure smiling cockily at it.

'Well, well, visitors to my humble rubbish pile.' 'It's not ours.' 'Coo, princess, they don't know that.'

Laughing, the two magi leaned over the crouching man who spoke to himself, face oddly hidden in shadow, but there was nothing threatening about their latest prey. Rather, it was just another wretch whose mind had been bent by the ordeal. 'Have you got anything interesting there, mister? We're just here to get the protection fee.'

First one twist of the head, then two, then it settled as laughter flickered from the depths. 'I've got something REALLY special for you this time, lads. It'll pay protection for the rest of my life, I think.'

'Eager, leaning forwards, the first mage was suddenly thrown as the charging human from the side punched them with definitely inhuman force.

Twisted eyes showing nothing but madness, the masked man laughed as he called his puppet to help deal with these pathetic weaklings. The so styled 'masters'. He grinned, then looked sad, then grinned again as the second mage fought the puppetman.

In a moment, it was over, blades pincusioning the puppet did nothing, where the second mage lay with a broken neck. The first, scared, waved his hand and called walls of fire. The possessed one, now wrapped in flame, began to chase the last mage while the masked man leant over the body of the dead one.

'Since he's already dead, it would be a shame for those memories to go to waste. Besides, he was hardly a good human. Can I?' Reaching towards a toolkit, he grinned beneath the mask as he felt the puppet finally fold and die. There would be stories of this event told quickly around the small remainder of the people here. There were only a few left now. Each death a dwindling number for the survivors. Each death losing the hope of everyone surviving it. How long would it take?

He stood up, vial now full of liquid dreams in his hands. Not long. Not long now. Not at all.

The grin beneath the mask went feral. Teeth sharpening to a point as the eyes flicked red.

Six Five fateful adventurers bravely strode into the Vault. Well prepared with supplies and weapons in hand they were ready for anything. Except a dance competition.

After they regained their vision, having been blinded by the sudden flashes of light, they were whisked away to dressing rooms by graish wannabe fashionistas. When they returned they were....shiny. So very very shiny.

Before they could object, not that anyone could have heard what they said over the hubbub of the slavering crowd of dance enthusiasts (for the next 30 minutes anyway), they were paired up.

Penguinator with usourselves&we were made to perform the waltz.

Vesth and Tom the Mime did the rumba.

And poor Szilard, all alone, thrashed are spastically having no clue what else to do.

The crowd...let out a deafening roar of texting their votes and the dancers were lead offstage, where they found themselves back outside the vault as the door slammed behind them. It suddenly opened again as their clothes and belonging were hurled at them as if shot by a cannon and the door slammed shut once more. Some of them later discovered they had come away with a bit more in their wallets than when they entered.

Night Twenty-One:

The half-twisted horror ran through the streets, the yipping howls behind her prodding her to greater lengths. The hounds, behind, lit the cold night sky with their flaming breathe.

Glancing over her shoulder, she dived into an alleyway, the sudden break to the right throwing the beasts a little as they continued the reckless chase through the streets of the city.

There was no stars in the sky above. Almost a testament to the lack of empathy this world showed to all who had fallen beneath it's dark sun and cold sky.

Panting, out of sight, Castaras hid inside a building, a former department store by the look of it. Hiding quickly in the isles, she waited there, terrified. Every day in this world had gotten a little darker as they went, and now monsters seemed to prowl the streets.

After a few moments of heartpounding wait, almost expecting at any moment for the hell hounds to poke their snouts around the corner, nothing happened but a low growl coming from... the entrance?

Risking a glance slightly around the corner, she saw the hell hounds standing at the door. Unmoving. As if the door was a barrier to them. Poking the head around enough for the hell hounds to definitely see her, they still didn't move.

Finally, escape! A laugh of triumph burst from the tired, frightened half-eldritch horror. Caused from the stress, fear, and final relief.

Which didn't last long...

The cold hand that touched her shoulder froze her mid-laugh. The man behind her moving close, soft robes rustling. 'Greetings, childe.' The voice, honey soft, and yet chilling, held her still.

'My pets did such the honour of escorting you to me, you should thank them.' His gesture at the hell hounds at the door caused her to tense, then attempt to pull free...

Only to find that he was unnaturally strong.

'My teachers mentioned you. Half-childe of one of the ancients. Your death will be... especially pleasing.'

Frozen, unable to move, the girl merely crumpled as the blade protruded through the chest, lifeblood quickly fading. As the demon savant stood over the corpse laughing, another shadow flickered at the back of the room.

'Well, a little too fast for me I see.' 'I couldn't let you have her, my deepest apologies.' The masked man grinned behind the mask, slowly fading.

'This is but one move in this game. Not the end, slave of ancients.'
