I thought the gold trim indicated officer status, but the red shirt indicated operations.

The gold wrist-stipes indicate rank. Captain=2.5, Cmdr=2, Lt. Cmdr=1.5, etc

In TOS Trek, Engineering and Security wear red, and Command wears gold. In TNG and later Trek, they reversed it. Why, I've never heard.

I believe it was just that they thought Patrick Stewart looked better in red*. The "redshirt" stereotype may have been involved too.

*That was definitely why they redefined Data's role from the intended Science Officer to "Chief of Operations" - apparently, no-one thought the blue shirt worked with Spiner's makeup.

Roy's sister (whose name eludes me just now) is sitting at Uhura's station, so I guess she's Uhura and Celia is Rand. Does make that scene in Plato's Stepchildren really awkward.

To be fair, the kiss in PS was awkward *anyway*, given that mind control was involved...

There's no ST character for Blackwing. I guess he'll just have to settle for being a random red shirt.

I was thinking he should have been wearing the same colour as V, myself...

Very obviously a laid down stick figure in the high res versions.

The Redshirts = Doomed was an accepted fact back when TNG first aired as i recall.

In fact to add to that i've taken advantage of my new systems monitor to review the old images and spotted the following things that i missed previously:

The Temple picture has the words "After Trampier" written on the steps

The Snowman Picture has a small winged snail in the background, presumably half dragon.

The Beach Picture's O-Chulu is covered in the same scars he got from the shark tank indicating there are Sharks in the water, no wonder he looks so unhappy.

The forest picture in addition to the little drake that i didn't identify as such at the time also has a pair of ogres in the background and an Earth Elemental in the foreground.

Oh and another Trek one. The lights above the turbolift make the ship look like some sort of elemental....

IIRC, the "female" uniform is called a Skant, and it's supposed to be unisex, although only women wore it in TOS. But there's a shot of a man wearing one in the separation/evacuation sequence in Encounter at Farpoint.

The Red Shirt Curse also applied to the bridge crew. Scotty was killed, by Nomad (and then fixed, likewise). And Uhura was brain-wiped (also Nomad). It's no wonder that they all went on strike until Starfleet agreed to swap colors with Command.

This of course ignores the times Kirk and Spock died. Why, it's almost as if having contrived manufactured drama was a staple of storytelling!

Rich's poking fun at the power of acquiring a name is far closer in spirit to the original use of redshirts, though even then there were minor exceptions. It is only through the hazy mist of time that the supposed rule of red = doomed came into being. And even then I figured most people were joking and knew it was more about New Unnamed Extra than anything else.

I was actually thinking about the kind Picard wore in fancy occasions, which was a bit longer. And I believe appears after Season 2.

I would disagree. Only makes more sense. "Well, we would go in reverse, but we can't find it, so we're only going forward because we can't find reverse.

"Only" makes some sense, but "boldly going" is a widely recognized phrase relating to the Star Trek franchise, and with the use of Star Trek references in literally every other line of the lyrics, "boldly" is the logical choice.

I would seriously doubt that Rich has the rights to do that--depends on private details of his contract with Gygax Magazine, of course, which he's not likely to tell us and nor are we entitled to know them.
