Following the Light

Following the Light

As they approach the light, the two will find it harder and harder to look directly into it as it gets harsher and brighter. It may drive them to look away and lose everything, but if they persist, they will eventually walk through it and be bathed in glowing fog.

A voice, hazy and indistinct, calls out to her, "Elaine? Is that... my Elaine?"

Elaine takes a deep breath. "I am Elaine de Vere Stevenson. Who are you?" She's hopeful, but not trusting.

At the Party

Hekta looks at Elias in absolute confusion as he suddenly pulls a knife, and winches, trying to pull away as he starts making a cut, not the smartest move but the pain makes her winche. "AHHH! What did you do that for?!" She shouts back at Elias who will notice that the blood that now trickles down Hekta's arm is pitch black and seem much thicker than human blood. He might also note that her wound is already slowly closing.

In the Darkness

Hekta and Elias will hear the cackling laughter of the gremlins as they enter the darkened ruins of the casino beyond the well-lit lobby. After Elias makes his cut, their glowing eyes begin appearing all around the pair, staring down at them hauntingly. No one in the lobby can see the eyes, but while in the darkness with the gremlins, they can.

"Mistress wants. Come." One of the evil little creatures speaks, the words hissing out from between the carved lips of its gourd.

The Fool runs a finger through Hekta's blood and paints a streak across her face. "It makes you even more beautiful." Then the gremlins speak. The Fool pulls Hekta close, protectively. "She's mine! You can't have her!" he hisses.

At the Party

Hekta stares at Elias in disbelief but can't answer before the gremlins arrive and Elias pulls her close again. While Elias was acting all weird, these creatures didn't seem all that nice either, she better cast a spell to make it all go away.

"Abra kadabra! Away you go andeliasturnbacktonormal!" She exclaims while waving her arms around expectantly without anything happening beyond making Hekta look sorely disappointed.

Halloween Night - Kate and Mintbalm

Mintbalm seems perturbed for some reason, but quickly gets over it, "Right, well if you need something done, you'll know where to find me if you can find your way back. Observing seems to suit me fine, for now." Some part of her wants to trek off and investigate with Kate, it would certainly be more interesting than socializing, but the rest of her new personality urges her not to meddle when she's clearly out of her league.

At the Party

Gremlin heads shake and whispy laughter sounds as they inch closer to the pair, "Her, Mistress does not want. Mistress wants youuuu.~" The vile little things singsong, gesturing again for Elias to come closer. Some of the little imps begin chanting "Abra Kadabra! Abra Kadabra!" clearly mocking Hekta's attempts at sorcery.

Toward the Light

"I.... don't know. Where are you? I can almost remember your voice." The response seems to be getting more faint by the moment, and the light surrounding them has faded to a dull grey at the edges.

Kate will move away from Mintbalm, and toward Ormirrah. "How is your evening?" She will ask casually.

Prmirrah turns to look at Kate up and down before shifting her feet. This woman holds herself with some grace and dignity, obviously. it'd be rude to brush her off like she might with some of the riff-raff here, "Beyond being scared half out of my head by an illusion, I'm doing alright, thanks. What about you? Are you making out alright?"

Kate can't help but wonder who Ormirrah really is, how much of her is her and how much is the costume. "Well enough, but my previous companion has decided to take up a spectator role, leaving me alone." Kate is somewhat worried about this... she's giving this poor woman an entirely wrong first impression! She's not actually this suave!

Of course, what's going on inside her head is hidden, not only by a porcelain mask, but by a perfect composure that only lets through what she wants to let through.

"I-I could stay with you then. Keep you company," and thus, Ormirrh wants to find out about this incredibly dignified individual. It'd be like learning from a master, "My name is Ormirrah."

Ormirrah tries to get a sense for Kate's body shape, to see if she can't mimic that poise.

"It might be only me, but I have the strange feeling these costumes won't let us pass."

Andy looks around preparing for whatever comes to him.

"Butler. It may be best to get out of the costume."

I think you'd be right, Ezrael. If I clear us an aisle, can you take point?

"You're probably right sir." Butler doesn't want everyone paying for the costume he got. That doesn't seem fair or reasonable or nice at all!

Butler moves behind Jaces and tries to take the costume off. I suspect it won't come off willingly.

"Ah, ah, ah."

Kate brings one finger up to her mask, placing it on the porcelain mouth. "The masks don't come off until the end of the event, dear. However, I would appreciate your company."

On the inside, Kate facepalms. Blast, the masquerade mindset practically revels in the mystery around it.

Kate is standing straight, and does look rather dignified although she doesn't realize it. Of course, Kate's body shape is the usual exceedingly unnoticeable totally average shape that she has.

And yet she's totally rocking that average-ness, isn't she? Ormirrah literally doesn't have a chest and she's got more of a figure than Kate, but she doesn't have nearly the same level of grace at the moment, "Right then. Do you know why most of these losers are acting so odd?"

Case in point Decker, who, perhaps ironically, is attempting to deck people.

"If you believe what the hostess said, and I find little reason not to, people in this room are being affected so that they act like their costumes. No one here are really themselves, each one is someone different than who they really are. I know I am, and I suspect you are. No one here is who they seem."

That's something to think about, no matter who you think you are at the moment.

...assuming that Ormirrah's using the definition of "poser" that Kate thinks she is. Slang is confusing.

The Party

Alysha will step closer to the floating mouth and eyes. Her whole demeanor has changed. Gone is the peppy vampire from before.

She'll reach out to where Amil's hair should be, on the side of her head, and try to give said hair a light stroke.

Mm...you know, that ability is quite unique. Very attractive to some. Her voice seems to have dropped in pitch, and has an almost enchanting quality to it.

Eyes and mouth close, leaving naught but a whirl of air for the vampire's caress.

"'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves," chants Amil's voice, taking on a very sing-songy quality.

"Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe."

"Ahehehehe... I don't think the one you're looking for is here. Have you tried searching last Tuesday? I hear it's nice this time of night."

Seems Amil/The Cheshire Cat is rather invisible at the moment.

Krystal takes a closer look at the people here. She doesn't remember most of them being here when she got here.

No, wait, that isn't entirely true...she saw them. But they were costumes. Now, they seem almost like the real thing...

You know what set these things off?

The voice. The voice was commanding them, but I did not see the speaker. The Wraith's eyes scan the room, but no, still no sign of the sorcerer behind all this. If we find them we might end this. If they can be found. I do not suppose you know who called this celebration?

"No." Hekta declares as she attempts to put Elias wrist in a tight grip. "You're not going to talk to some meanie queen, not without me at least." She didn't know why Elias acted so weird or why none of her spells worked but she was sure neither these mean things or their leader was going to make it any better. Leaning closer to Elias she whispers, "We need to get out of here. Now."

Gertrude will reach up and try to widen the hole, starting by attempting to insert her thumb into it and if that works, she'll try stretching it with two fingers.

"Not a one." Trisha admits with a small and concerned smile before tilting back her head to take a drink of wine. As she does so, a tendril of shadow flickers into her own. When her glass is set back down, it's empty and she can't help but grin at Michicora before trying to wrap her arm around the elf's shoulders. "But that doesn't bother you, does it?" He asks, her twinkle in her eye and a slight husky tone to her voice.

Towards The Light

Vinny squints his eyes as they get closer, but he doesn't turn his back to it at all. When the voice reaches out, he sets a hand on Elaine's shoulder if she lets him. "Be careful ma'am. Please."

Alysha's mouth gets set in a hard line for a moment. Clearly, she wasn't enjoying the response.

But she wasn't going to give it up yet.

Perhaps you would be willing to guide me, then? Clearly, you seem to be more well versed in where, and when, I should be searching.

Krystal shakes her head a little, still looking around.

Nope. 'Fraid not. And if they're capable of this, then they probably ain't gonna have their name down in a registry somewhere.

Krystal puts a hand to her forehead, like she had a headache. Somethin' ain't right here. Feel like a completely different person or somethin'. Hm...seems she isn't as completely wrapped up by the spell as others.

"Oh ho hehe he he haaaa! Oh dear no!" Once again the eyes and teeth appear, though this time they look... quite a bit different. The eyes are wide and cat-like. And that jagged, toothy grin spreads faaaaaar further and higher than it probably should. "That would be a dreadful idea! And miss the party here? Oh no, I can't be doing that! We haven't even had tea yet."

And who in their right mind would miss tea at a party?

"I'm afraid you'll have to find last Tuesday on your own. Though I do suppose the good Caterpillar might be able to help you along the way?"

Are there even any caterpillars at the party?

The Wraith sighs, the illusion in which he's costumed turning the sound to that of chains rattling and the wind howling through the branches of some dark forest. Oh. An effect of the shadows maybe? Or... Have you eaten anything? He's suddenly quite glad that he delayed eating any of that candy. Who knows what effects it might've held.

[The Party - Kirk & Dena]

Dena was actually just about to dash away, though her player wasn't sure if Kirk was stuck or not. In any case, she isn't planning to give up so easily either but she isn't sure how to avoid these tendrils, smoke bombs probably won't help but who knows? Maybe they rely on sight somehow?

So as they run Dena throws a smoke bomb behind them as they go, planning to make a classic ninja disappearance. Now to just find a direction where there wasn't tendrils, perhaps upwards? She scans the ceiling for some type of exit while she hopes Kirk is doing the same.

Halloween Night - Lobby

As Dena and Kirk escape their own set of doomy tendrils and head to where everyone else is huddling for safety, Dena looking up to the ceiling has clued her into a very important fact. The tendrils of shadow that are reaching ever closer to the center of the room are above their heads now, and yet they aren't trying to touch anyone. Instead, they're reaching for the flickering candle flames in the chandeliers. One can only imagine what will happen if they have their way and the lights are extinguished, but it can't be good.

Kirk does a quick scan of the perimeter of the room and curses under his breath when he sees that the shadows have them surrounded completely. His attention goes upward as well. "I don't suppose you have any way of getting up there." He eyes the shadows creeping toward the candles and points them out. "Any chance you keep that little tanning light ball of yours with you?"

While Trisha was a fairly good distraction from the goddess speech the huntress still noticed that there is something wrong when the tendrils started to swarm the room. She was confident that she and Trisha was able to fight whatever was threatening them however as she starts to pull a knife from a pocket of her dress. At least you could easily hide things in it.

Once again she's distracted by Trisha however an shivers slightly as the champion suddenly wraps her arm around her shoulder. "We need to get out of here." She quickly says to Trisha, but refuses to move yet without the champion.

Out of the cloak comes and orb that shines like a miniature sun. He holds it up high, in hope that it drives the shadows back.

She turns away from the floating face, an air of importance about her. Her eyes scan the crowd around her, looking for somebody who might be more cooperative.

Krystal shakes her head. No...not the food. Probably the shadows. Must've grabbed me right when I came outta the door.

I think...I think the shadows are changing people's behavior. Makin' 'em act like whatever they're dressed as.

Not we just gotta figure out why.

The material crumbled in her hands as Gertrude pulls at it, and although the walls are fairly thick it won't be long until she's expanded the hole from the size of her thumb to the size of her head. The light from the outside is staggeringly bright, and it's difficult to make out shapes beyond the hole, but one thing that is fairly clear are massive columns waving back and forth limply against the light.

She can keep digging and escape to the outside at this point, or do something else if she's so inclined.

At the Party

"No." Hekta declares as she attempts to put Elias wrist in a tight grip. "You're not going to talk to some meanie queen, not without me at least." The things cackle, pointing at Elias with glee, "She gets what she wants. You she wants, you she gets." Without any other warning, a wide circle beneath Elias and Hekta's feet opens up, the floor disappearing and possibly dropping them into the depths below.

The Office

Should Elias and Hekta fall into the shadows, they will wind up in a grey concrete walled "office" with only a folding card table and a few plastic chairs to serve as furniture. On the table is a man's skull with a candle burning brightly inside, acting as a macabre jack o lantern. In a chair across from them on the other side of the table sits Eris, watching the proceedings in the lobby on an old portable TV with live rabbit ears sticking out of the receiver.

"I don't know. Please, Elaine. Tell me what you were like? Let me hear the memories again? If you're truly there, don't tempt me with them and leave me to forever wonder."

The costume will attempt to latch back on to Butler the moment any part of it is let go, but if he strips it off entirely and keeps a good hold on it, he could manage to keep it from wriggling its way back on to him.

Of course, the other costumes made for men, women, and otherwise that are closing in on the quartet, so just getting out of the vet costume might be the least of Butler's troubles as the witch costume that the store attendant was wearing tries to poke him and thereby cover him with itself and Witchify him. Meanwhile, the other costumes that are crowding the aisles get closer, but don't get within range of Jace's spear just yet. It looks like they're waiting patiently for him to slip up so that one can touch him and Ezreal while he's recovering.

The miniature sun dissolves the nearest tendrils outright, the ultraviolet light damaging them in ways that the spectral green fire didn't manage to do. However, the ones far above their heads near the ceiling only fray at the edges slightly before finally reaching for the candles and snuffing out the lights.

Everyone not within the range of either the Wraith's green flames or Dena's tanning orb will immediately be plunged into darkness, and those who dodged the tendrils earlier will now be susceptible to their personality changing effects unless they act very quickly to illuminate themselves somehow.

Meanwhile, Crissy who was by the card tables in the middle of the room may find herself encircled by something physical and powerful as the darkness comes, a thick, muscular tail slipping around her waist and trying to draw her back to the rows of slot machines and their flickering, half-functional screens.

...and suddenly, she feels herself being pulled backwards. Bringing a shriek from the brunette half-elf, who's now wondering just what sort of critter escaped from...

"Auntie Em!" Crissy, who dressed as Dorothy Gale, shrieks as she struggles!
