The White Room

Neldor and Lothbrok, you find yourselves in the stark white room previously described, looking at each other, the body of an elf slumped against the wall, clutching a dagger, cradling a box, with a series of slash marks across wrists and throat. Four doors with closed eye-level slots and open ground slots you could fit an arm through. Lothbrok has ripped off his sleeves. What do you do now?

OK, here we go.

The elf, neldor, first addresses the newly awakened dwarf, saying, "Quiet down. we don't know where we are, or who put us here. or at least, I don't, and the look on your face suggests the same holds true for you. so we'd best not attract any more unwanted attention, i think."

Returning his attention yet again to the elf woman, he inspects her cuts closely, attempting to figure out whether they were inflicted because of combat...or suicide. after making his determination, he relieves the body of the dagger and box, then walks over to the dwarf. he hands the dwarf the box but keeps the dagger, and picks the dwarf's sleeves off the floor, and ties them around his hands.

"You should open tat, see what's inside. I'm going to keep these cloth strips nearby; we have nothing so anything might prove useful right now. While my first inclination would normally have been to leave you, we may need each other's help if either of us is to live."

BTW, what are the light conditions like? both of us have darkvision, so it could be pitch-black and we could still see, but i want to know what any enemies we might encounter will see.

Neldor, you can tell that the cuts were self-inflicted. Since you've been checking out the body, you can also tell that she looks emaciated, as though she hadn't eaten in a long time.

The dagger itself is finely-crafted and silver, though it is currently caked with dried blood.

Handling the box, you can see that it has a locking mechanism that requires a key.

"bloody elfling always trying to give the commands" the dwarf grumbles. nevertheless he attempts the open thebox......regardless of that outcome he then stands up walks o the doors and sees if they are locked (without opening them if pssible)

Lothbrok, you find that the box is locked and so are the doors.

"We're gonna have to reach under these doors to open them, i think. "

arbitrarily picking the door he believes is north, Neldor readjusts his handwrap so that it covers his skin entirely, and get on the ground. he pushes the slot open with his free hand, and takes a look.

The eye-level slots cannot be opened.

Looking through the ground-level one, Neldor can see another door just like the one you're crouching by. You can see that a very complex locking mechanism is holding the door shut, and you can see a symbol carved very intricately and precisely into the door. It is a set of calipers, and it looks very much like this:

Okay then. Neldor, you know that this is the symbol of the dark god of knowledge The Xammux. Often appearing as a set of unified entities, The Xammux is a cold and calculating Neutral Evil deity who goads its followers to seek out information no matter how dark a road they may travel, and using whatever methods are necessary.

"Interesting. It would appear that we're likely under some sort of behaviorial study. The people holding us are likely followers of the Xammux, and are probably going to let us do what we will; rats in a trap. I suspect all the doors are locked similarly as this one is, and that woman over there was unable to either open the box or get out. I wonder why she got a dagger and we didn't though...maybe they just figured we'd take hers and start with the same gear anyway."

Neldor checks all the doors to confirm his suspicion before moving on.

and how heavy is the box?

As you check, each door has another door across from it just like the first one, each with a different lock.

The door you chose as north had a series of complex sturdy locks on the door across from it.

The door you would assume east has an odd lock that clearly requires a single lever to be pushed or pulled to unlock the door.

The door you would assume west has a metal box over where the handle should be, with a button on it that can be pushed or pulled.

Looking across through the door towards the south, you see that that door is simply a wall that has been carved to look like a door, and you cannot even see a handle on it.

Lothbrok, the box is metal and about as heavy as you could expect. You can hear a rattling inside as you move it though.

are the hinges on the inside or outside of oue doors

"That's about the short of it. ell i know about them is that they tend to do experiments other people wouldn't, either because it's answering a question nobody will ever ask, or because the method they use is one others can't stomach. our situation likely involves both. Be suspicious, a little paranoia has saved my life several times over, and I suspect it may just do so again..."

He walks over to the lever, and ties Lothbrok's sleeves into a longish rope, and uses it to pull the lever towards him.

You cannot see hinges, though they clearly have handles. The doors themselves are made of the same smooth white stone that the room is made of. Also, though the room is clearly lit, you can see no light source.

i use the box to hit the botton on the door with the box on the handle

Are you attempting this on the door across? Or on your door, the door that you can see the lever from? Looking straight at your doors from inside, you can see no locks. The locks themselves are mounted to the outside, and you cannot see your own locks.

Lothbrok, you throw the box upwards through the ground slot. You hear it strike solid stone, and it clatters back to the ground within arm's reach.

i pick it up again cursing incessantly "what about you el? you got anything/"

Sorry Neldor, I thought this already sent. You feel your rope catch on something, before slipping off and falling to the ground. You hear nothing, and the door does not budge however.

"oi elfling hand me that rope thing ya made. there my sleeves in the first place."

"nothing so far. let me try again."

I stick the dagger into the cloth, forming a small loop at the end with the dagger as a weight. tying a bit of the cloth around the handle so it won't come loose, I lasso the lever, trying as many times as necessary, and pull again, this time with the dagger as a weight to keep the rope down on the lever.

Trying this multiple times, you can tell that it's not catching on a lever at all, but a much more thick object.
