Not necessarily. Chickens have pretty poor eyesight - unless the thing is right in its face, it straight up doesn't see it's there.

They would still see themselves when they go to drink. Maybe they can turn it off when they're not feeling actively threatened.

I think the real question is how do they eat. Although with a gaze attack I guess they can just be herbivores and not have to worry about meeting the eyes of the delicious corn.

I ran a cockatrice random encounter in D&D - where Cockatrices petrify on a bite - a couple months ago that started off with finding the poor thing sadly trying to eat all the rats it had petrified while trying to hunt and eat them. Its day didn't improve from there.

If I was on a farm where roosters might hatch cockatrices, I'd kill all the roosters. All chicken breeding would be done in a tightly regulated centralized secure vault, which would sell all the baby chicks to farmers. Or I'd just raise cows. Cows are only dangerous to Diablo heroes AFAIK.

Hastings is going with the "Gaze" form of pretrification that the Basilisk usually has. So he didn't "reflect" the petrification back at him more like how Medusa was defeated.
