I put in a vote for "variable magic." Alternate magic was meant to be a theme based on inventing different magic systems (incarnum, psionics, binding, etc.).

By the way, I'm planning on dumping any themes that don't get votes from the table for next time to keep it clean. We can still vote for them, but at least the table will start smaller.

There is already a standard Madness ruleset with the d20srd, its hidden within the tome of unearthed arcana.

The themes are intentionally broad to allow for variety. There is no set mechanic you must use or should use, even. You can do whatever you want with your base class following the rules of the contest.

Mechanics fit together pretty much no matter what anyway, so compatibility is still up to the DM to decide on.

Basically what malonkey said. I'll go where the votes lead me this time. Madness is currently ahead by two and most of the playgrounders who regularly vote for themes have voted, so it's likely going to be the next theme.

I will vote for madness as well. I may actually start participating in these again since I am almost done with my necromantic codex.

I might do something based of Soul Eater since my old vector witch was well received. Maybe a Kishin or a Chrona inspired class. And a question, may I use previously made homebrew in a base class challenge thread. For example having the class use incantations from my necromantic codex?

WotC's system is very good and tidy, but it only works with a realistic, slow, permanent descend into madness. I'll have to cook up something more... lovecraftian. The short of thing that is responsible for snapping on a tight schedule, to serve as another subdual damage.

Eldritch Conduit here, the guy intrigued -or seduced- by the Far Realm and its inhabitants. Things like insanity damage, pseudonatural appendages, illusions as an excuse for his nature and incisions in the space-time fabric.
