Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
I'm thinking of the "Insanity Monk" with a possible 'madness' discipline.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
I was personally thinking of a class where it derives power based on what mental illnesses it has(Bonuses to Spot and Attack due to OCD attentiveness, able to switch out feats and skills with D.I.D. (Dissociative Identity Disorder, the professional name for Multiple Personality Disorder), etc.), with the ability to become more insane as the class gains levels.
Might be interesting, although not sure how that could be implemented mechanically. It is fun to imagine how they'd talk though.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
A game is a fictional construct created for the sake of the players, not the other way around. If you have a question "How do I keep X from happening at my table," and you feel that the out-of-game answer "Talk the the other people at your table" won't help, then the in-game answers "Remove mechanics A, B, and/or C, impose mechanics L, M, and/or N" will not help either.

I'm considering a class that removes parts of their mind and 'summons' them. They go more insane the more summons they have out.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
I've been meaning to ask, how much is too much?
I mean, i have a... feeling... that, idea after tempting idea, i went a little overboard with the size of the Themeweaver's class feature list (more like a tome than a class). I have established how bad dead levels are, but is there some measure on when i must pick out the worst (or least good, hopefully) ideas instead of adding them, too?

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
Depends on the class. Sometimes adding more options adds enough versatility to make the class really, really powerful and if that's not what you want, you might have to weed out some things or tone them down.
On the other hand, more options makes your class more fun, generally. And with that said, bigger classes tend to have more depth, though that's not because there's simply more--it's because a lot of hard work went into the class. Depth is important when you're making a class--especially a base class--because it makes your class stand out, act on its own, and feel good while doing it.
The zodiac (additional signs) is one example of a big and deep class. It has a ton of reading and takes up two posts. It's also cool and it just feels good to look at it and probably to play it, too.
The farmer, on the other hand, stands out as a class with notable depth, but fairly small size. You know you're playing a farmer at all times while playing this class; you feel it and it feels good. There was no need for a lot of abilities to make it feel that way, so there aren't--plain and simple.
What I'm getting at is that classes can have different levels of size, but that doesn't automatically mean that they're good or bad; the amount of work (and love ) you put into the class is what makes it good.
As for an official ruling, there is no limit to the size of an entry. You could have six posts of content for your class or 15,000 characters. It doesn't matter, as long as the class follows the rules.Homebrew

Oh, man, sometime we need to do a contest themed around NPC classes. The idea being to make a class intended for average (i.e. non-adventurer) individuals.

Well, mine implied Cthulhu-or-what-have-you But I'm glad mine won't be the only one inflicting, rather than suffering, insanity. Or both, obviously
My question was what average size turns depth and interest into nausea but i get the point. Thanks!

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
Well, DracoDei's grace gift is pretty outstandingly long and a lot of people follow that closely last time I checked.
Similarly, Zeta Kai's works tend to be long and engrossing. His Final Fantasy X d20 project is what got me to join these boards, if I remember correctly.
Also, Realms of Chaos made the gambit fighter a long time ago, which is probably my favorite "fighter fix." That's in quotes because it hardly resembles a fighter.
In short, it depends. You have to be able to keep people interested in your deal before you simply make it.
Also, sorry if I destroy your life as you are sucked into these great works.Last edited by Temotei; 2013-06-12 at 02:34 PM.

EDIT: I am glad for the votes I got, but for everyone's benefits, please try to explain why you voted for each class, if only so we know where we went wrong or right.Last edited by malonkey1; 2013-06-18 at 10:30 PM.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
I'm going to wait another day to see if Melayl responds to me about having three votes. If he doesn't respond, his votes won't go through and we act as if he hasn't voted. Anyway, voting is done.
If anyone has objections to this, tell me. My ears are open.
Also, little thought, the voting thread is probably open for too long. I'm likely going to shorten the voting period by a few days in the future.
EDIT: I forgot to close the voting thread. Facepalm.Last edited by Temotei; 2013-06-19 at 01:41 PM.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
I'll have to second Malonkey's notion of NPC classes, but extend it from "average" to "support" classes (A truly exceptional blacksmith, for example, is not average, nor PC class, he's a plot hook/quest giver.

Melayl finished his votes very quickly, so we're on to the next contest.
Congratulations to everyone for making great classes. All of you had at least three points-worth of votes, which is an accomplishment by itself.

Re: Base Class Challenge Chat Thread III: Gotta 'Brew 'Em All!
Anyone remember this? Morph Bark did a quick summary of kneecap totals back in the day.
Let's see how they add up now.
Any ties for 2nd and 3rd place were given as actual ties and skipped; for example, if 1st place got 13 points, and there were two classes with 12, followed by one with 11, fourth place would be the one with the next-lowest count after 11. This is because of an early contest in which tie breaking wasn't done for 2nd and 3rd places.

You can take this as an official statement that anyone in 4th place loses a kneecap as per section 1, paragraph 1 of the contest host's posts. It's the risk vs. reward deal that makes these contests so invigorating. The closer you get to victory, the closer you get to losing a kneecap until you really secure a place in the top three.Homebrew

I like that, consider it done. Maybe add plot hooks in the turn-in requirements?
Also, to the guy mentioning insane clowns, why would you be so evil as to mention the closest thing to a lovecraftian horror that can still be described? We're making "madness" classes, not joining them
