...this brings up a question. If Aizen knew all about Ichigo, why didn't he try to exploit the Quincy powers he had. Hell, why didn't he anticipate it, since it's clear (to me atleast) that the Quincy powers are secretly what ACTUALLY allowed him to destroy the Hoggoyokai or whatever the hell it is. He unconciously channeled his Quincy powers, draining the reiatsu from it untill it blew up.

As much as I love Tsukishima's Hax power, that's not liable to work.

Even if he could cut him, which is possible if unlikely, his power only edits peoples' memories, not their personalities.

On the shortlist of people who are least likely to care that you have been their closest friend for their entire life, Aizen is basically at the top. We've already seen what happens when people who are super-close to Aizen get even remotely in his way, or even just outlive their usefulness to him. It would not be pretty.

Tsukishima is so broken. All it takes is one cut to make someone his ally. Then again it had its limitations, not like mental domination. I wonder whose ability is stronger: his or Aizen's.

I honestly always thought this was the canon explanation, and I've been holding to it with unyielding commitment.

If nothing else, the timing supports it - as I recall, Ichigo had just managed to legitimately injure Aizen for the first time, and Yamamoto had very nearly fried with with a nuclear-kido-thing. So Aizen pulls out all the stops and starts with the lies... and, you know, rapidly reduces Ichigo to the point where he's too stunned and confused to attack his enemy before Aizen can regenerate or regain his spirit energy.

It was stalling for time, basically. And it was probably going to work perfectly, right up until Isshin arrived.

I agree that Tsukishima's powers would work best against opponents who would refrain from hurting or killing someone they feel close to, but he can still find out about potential weaknesses, so cutting them might always be beneficial for him.

Aizen doesn't even need to cut you, you just need eyes and to witness his ability which has X activation time. (We do not know what X is)

So anyone placing bets who is going to win? Zaraki or Unohana?

I seriously doubt either character is really going to die from a manga standpoint. Yet both characters are people who will not show mercy when they get serious. Thus I speculate Zaraki is eventually going to win after learning a thing or two, have him defeat Unohana and leave her for what Zaraki thinks is dead only for Unohana to heal herself in the end (bankai?)

So, Zanpakutous are mass produced weapons that get customized by their more capable users? I like this explanation , it actually makes sense. This also explains why all those shinigami mooks can't do anything special.

So the zanpakutou is supposed to be the master, or at least the teacher? If so, I'm curious why Zangetsu never acted more like that. I mean, sure, he did it like that a bit anyway, but more like a kind-yet-reluctant teacher, not really all I-am-your-master.

If anyone dies in the battle between Unohana and Zaraki, I'd bet it to be Unohana, but she likely has a way of getting over that. We haven't seen the bankai of either yet, so this'll be interesting. Nice touch that Zaraki's scar was given to him by Unohana, and he left one on her in return.

Gotta say though... when the manga panned to the lowest level of the prison, I honestly thought, "oh ****, Aizen is getting away" and "wait, they're getting Aizen's help?"

Did they, though? I remember there being some hinting at that, but that could easily be from anime filler and the movies. And Zaraki could have stolen his.

Alternatively, if only the zanpakutou spirits, but not the actual swords, were shown prior to their joining the Academy, then it's easily explained as that being the form of their own inner power, which the asauchi they were given later took.
