Out of all the fan crossover concepts I've seen for FiM, I think Dan-vs-FiM is one of the funniest ones I've seen.

Now, I've read my share of Agatha Christie over the years, but I'm not entirely confident in my abilities to copy the genre yet. What are some basic tips to creating a Mystery? My instinct tells me to work backwards, figure out how It Was Done, and then cover it up one piece at a time. That sound right?
What's the reverse of being ninja'd? Being pirate'd? Hmm... don't sound right...

I'm creating a mystery story myself and working backwards is how I put the outline together.
Another thing I did was write down all the clues that the protagonist would find and at what point they find them. This way I can keep myself consistant with how much the protagonist knows about the mystery.

In general, the style I'm going with has the reader know only as much as the protagonist. So there are no chapters focusing on the antagonist or supporting characters when they're not with the main star of the story. However, you may be writing things differently than I. I'm not very familair with Agatha Christie.

It's not what I meant but it's great lyrics for it. What I meant is the episode of Reading Rainbow when Le Var Burton goes to Star Trek set on how they make series.

Did you see my idea earlier? I think if you're trying to write a mystery you definitely do want to work backwards. But don't think of it as dropping clues for a mystery, think of it more like a real-world investigation. You know what happened, you know the things that the ponies involved forgot or did wrong. How hard are they to notice. Take the factual scenario and describe it to other people you know and see what they come up with and have them explain how they came up with their scenario. Then change things to make the scene more clear or don't change things and leave the red herrings around.

Here's a mundane scenario. Somehow has gone out for an unspecified length of time. You want to know how long they're going to be gone, but they didn't tell you. They did, however, leave the door to their room open. There are many things you can check: is it cleaned up and is that normal? Is the computer in the room still on or did they turn it off? Is their bag/backpack/wallet still in the room? Did they change clothes before going out and is there another pair of clothing left out? Are there any dishes undone, any lights on, dishwasher or laundry running? Are windows open? Are shades/binds open or closed?

Oh. And here, I thought you were making a quip about Applejack wearing two ponytails normally (one in her mane and one in her tail) and Rainbow's hair being done up similarly for her Gala/wedding dress. (We don't see Rainbow's tail, but we could probably assume it is done up similarly.)

I rarely need an excuse to post filly Applejack, or Rainbow in her dresses.

Depite Oscar being my favorite muppet from that series, I'd pay money just to see what the Elements would do.

Also, considering Sesame Street doesn't really have a 4th wall, Pinkie suddenly became slightly more mundane.

Well, this is rather disappointing. Doesn't look like my latest story is going to get all that much attention. And here I thought I had given it a rather attention-grabbing description and all, but it's off the front page now and barely any views.

I guess I still can't predict what stories will reach the featured box. My last two stories didn't get any big attention either. I had high hopes for the Butterfly Brouhaha, and my latest isn't too bad either I'm sure, but alas, they all just sort of drop off the front page in half an hour to languish in eternal obscurity.

Is there some secret magic trick? Other than the rather tedious process of getting it featured on EqD? I just can't find the energy to go through that.

Maybe I should start publishing clopfics after all. That seems to get tons of attention whether it's good or not.

Next up, Alduin from Skyrim, Lord Dagoth from Morrowindand W.I.T.C.H Phobos.

Edit: Morrowind vs Equestria, which one is the best god ruled land (It's okay if it's best for adventure).

In my view, Celestia is an old and powerful pony. Discord is a weird dragon with extensive but fundamentally limited magical powers.
I do not agree with the central assumption that Equestria was ever a God or Goddess ruled nation*.

So, Morrowind by default. Though they can keep it, I've no interest in such a Cliff Racer infested hell-hole

    * note, Celestia does fullfill some of the same roles as a deity, as far as pony culture goes, at any rate. I still say it doesn't count.

Edit - Deadly, I can kind of empathise, but I also think it's worth seconding Thanqol. Hell, I'm pretty sure I have a picture or two on Deviantart that have essentially never been seen by another living person, if I get a half dozen hits or a single favourite then the work has been a runaway success. But I'm still getting antsy to get my computer replaced so I can get back to the piece I was supposedly working on.

Yes, but I like to think there ought to be things you can do to increase the odds. Like a clever description or the right title, or maybe the right image. You know ... you want to make your story whisper in their ears "You want to read me! Go on, you know you want to " It's a job for a Mind mage, I'm sure. What tickles the fancy of fanfic readers? What works? I apparently don't know.

It would help if there were some better ways to promote fanfics, rather than relying on pure chance. On dA there are the groups, which work really well to draw attention to artwork (although not so much fanfiction). Do the groups on FiMFiction do much of anything? I get the impression they don't, but I suppose I should give them a closer look.

I haven't had a lot of time for reading fanfics myself either. It comes and goes. No biggie

Ooh... Color me very interested. Also, I believe that Agatha Christie herself once said something about how she'd have another body turn up if she found herself stuck.

Oi! What are you doing in my room?
