Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
So, I face an interesting dilemma. I am currently the most wealthiest and the most 'peaceful', but with a large military nation. I just got industrialization and discovered there is no coal in anywhere of my territory, but there is 2 LARGE coal in a city state I'm allied with. I don't want to yet forfeit my friendly status, because twice the whole world (Including me) has declared war against Genghis Khan, and I haven't eclipsed them all yet for me to feel comfortable being at war with everyone.
Is there anyway I can convince the city state to give me the coal without having to invade it?

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
IIRC, under the 'give a gift' option when talking to that city state there should be an option to for about 200 gold called something 'improve a resource' or similar. Use that on one (or both, if you have cash) of the coal resources and the city state should then gift you the coal in the usual manner of allied city states.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
If you are Allied with a City State, you receive any strategic/luxury resources it has access to.
If you're ahead in technology, it's possible the city state doesn't have access to the coal because it hasn't discovered industrialisation. In this case, you either have to wait, invade, or steal the tiles with the coal in.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
I think Studoku probably has it right--while you're technologically advanced enough to see the coal, the city-state isn't, so they have no idea it's there and can't give it to you. Otherwise, you *would* get it just by virtue of being allied to them.
However, coal isn't really that important in Civ 5, IMHO. You need it to build Factories and Ironclads, and that's about it--you can certainly do without the latter, and the former just gives you a boost to your production, which can be at silly levels by this stage of the game anyway if you've built your cities right. Unless you're really hurting for Production, I'd say you don't need the coal.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
If they have coal, and you're allied, you have access to their coal. You sure you're allied? Some other Civ might have overtaken you while you weren't paying attention. Only other explanation I can see is a bug, if the coal is displayed on the City State screen as one of the resources they have. Unless of course pillaged resources still appear, but I doubt that.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
I think that if you can see the resource, then it's listed in their resources even if they don't have the technology to see it/improve it. So it's possible that the city-state hadn't discovered whatever you need to see coal, and just had mines built on coal-bearing hills by coincidence.
Or it could have just been a bug.Avatar by GryffonDurime. Thanks!

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
Until the city-state has the right tech to give it to you, you won't have the resource. The diplomacy screen just tells you what is in their borders, not what they actually give to you. Other reasons you won't have the resource is the tile not being improved or being pillaged.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
Hm, I was sure resources were only listed if the City-State had them accessed and available. Guess I'll have to check that out. Also, do City-States even have a tech-level themselves? I always assumed that it basically worked something like "If X number of Civs have a tech, the city-states are assumed to have it as well". Although I guess if City-States have entire tech trees of their own that explains why waiting for next turn can become horribly slow.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
10% boost to hammers on top of a flat 4 hammers is nothing to sneer at plus it gives you 2 more specialist slots. You'll get those hammers spent on the factory back pretty quickly.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
Well, I usually get to the point in the later game when I've run out of things to build and thus hammers are almost entirely useless--yes, you can switch the city to Wealth or Research, but I find you get a much more significant boost to science or gold output by selecting to concentrate on the relevant item in the Citizen Management panel. Yes, you might need an occasional burst of output to build a new Wonder or maybe a spaceship component (although I've never actually succeeded in researching all the spaceship techs before running out of time in Civ 5), but you can usually make that up with temporary trades from your other cities.
That's why I find factories largely useless. Your mileage, as they say, may vary...

Firaxis were the ones that made Alpha Centari. It was one of their first games after they broke away from Micropose.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
Uhhh.....
Currently, my Civ 5 game isn't working. :(
I'm on around turn 150 or so. ..
I have Windows 8. . .
How can I fix this?
The only error reported when it shuts down is that it has stopped working.

Re: Sid Meyer's Civilization
Try telling Steam to verify the integrity of the game cash?
EA published it and kept the rights, that's the problem. Firaxis is currently owned by Take-Two Interactive, so for a Alpha Centauri 2 to happen either EA needs to buy Firaxis (eg a disaster scenario) or EA needs to sell Alpha Centauri to Take-Two."that nighted, penguin-fringed abyss" - At The Mountains of Madness, H.P. Ah, I didn't realize that EA had the publishing rights to it.
