How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h4...d/Gamecock.jpg
I'm using MS Paint, though I'm open to downloading other applications to deal with this, if they're free.
1. How do I get rid of the white background for the image?
2. How do I smooth the lines/image so it doesn't look so pixelated?Last edited by Gamebird; 2006-12-01 at 11:24 AM. Reason: Sorry, but I keep refining the base picture.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Well, I'm not sure I can help your with the second one, but getting rid of the white background is moderatly simple. You can do it a couple ways:
Firstly, it typically needs to be a .gif, not a .jpg (though they both have their uses, .gifs are more common for avatars) - this might clear the problem. I don't use paint that often, so I dunno.
Second, you COULD take it into photoshop (if you have the progam) and select the chicken and the chicken alone. (sorry if it's not a chicken, but it's what it looks like to me, lol) Then, press Cntl+Alt+I to invert the selection. Delete. Take an eraser to the edges to clean up some of the residue. Save For Web. Problem DEFINATELY solved.
Third... you can ask a friendly person with photoshop or some other editing software to get rid of the white for you. If you need the help, I'd be happy to do it.
As to the edges thing... well, as I said, I don't often work in Photoshop, nor am I particulallry a raster image man. Good clean, clear crisp vector stuff for me. But see what it looks like without the white background first befor eyou bother with cleaning up the edges.SpoilerBladeofObliviom said:

I did that, but it's still the same white background.

I don't have Photoshop, only MS Photo Editor. Could you clean it up for me?
Here's the gif address: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h4...amecockgif.gif
Or you can use the bitmap address above.

I tried opening it in Photo Editor and setting white to a "transparent color", but that doesn't seem to do any good.Last edited by Gamebird; 2006-12-01 at 01:59 PM.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Whoa, Gamebird LIVES. O.O
GIMP is a free program which can be used to make the lines unpixilated and background transparent if you want to try it yourself.
I've got GIMP, PhotoShop, and Illustrator if you need anything fixed up.Gengy's got it...

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Welp, here's what I've got for you... it doesn't really solve the line problem, so Ego, if you wanna go ahead and do a rendition, feel free.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b4.../Gamebird2.gif
I lightened it up a bit, and decreased the image size, which may have messed with the edges a bit. Then I tried to fix said edges, and well... it does look a bit smoother, lol. Enjoy!SpoilerBladeofObliviom said:

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Hm. Looks a little blurry now. Do you have a version that's the original image (original colors, sharper lines), but without the white background?

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Sorry Game... gotta get back to doing homework. If Ego hasn't made one by tommorow, I'll get back on it, and clean it up some more when I'm back with my tablet. (on a school comp at the moment)

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
*mumble grumble*
GIMP generally hasn't been working correctly lately. So, now I'm ticked off. I can't get it to smooth anything out despite anti-aliasing. So, I think it's all up to Gengy now.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Save some time...
No, I haven't anti-aliased it, just following the earlier request of no AA.
It is a GIF, though, and it has transparency.
I hope I'm not treading on the toes of some of the more signficiant forum members here. If so, sorry.
Edit: Here's a version with a little AA.
Edit2: Which came out badly, I'm remaking it now.
Edit3: Done.
Unfortunately, I just realised you can't have anti-aliased transparency in a Gif, since it doesn't support alpha. Sorry!
Edit4: So here's a png instead.
Since IE6 doesn't support png transparency (get firefox! :p) there's a gif in the colour of the sidebar thing.
Bah, none of mine look as good as the one you have... time to mess with colour curves.Last edited by Bryn; 2006-12-02 at 12:34 PM.

Any way you can resave it as a jpeg file??? I can't really do anything with the gif.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
JPEG uses a lossy compression algorithm, meaning that if you save it in this format you will permanently destroy the image.
Always keep your originals and work from them, then if the image needs to be saved to a JPEG for the web, export a copy to JPEG. Generally it is best to work in the program's native format, with layers if the program supports it.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
Sorry, Gamebird.. Got hit hard by a project. Haven't had time to work with this. If you're happy with what you have, great! But I may still do some editting and PM you with it later.

Re: How do I smooth the lines on this avatar?
That's okay, Gengy. Between the sharper images of Z-Axis (thanks!) and yours, and TinSoldier's (which has subtle shading to it - neat!), I'm not sure which to pick.
