    No, trump works the same way there. Suits are ranked, in that you get more points if you win a hand where (say) spades are trump than if you win one where clubs are trump. But if clubs are trump, any club will take a trick in which everyone else played non-trumps.

    Trumps in bridge work the same way; the ranking of suits has to do with winning the bid before you play the hand, and how many points you get (the most point-valuable suit is actually no-trump).

    In response to ScurvyCur: hear, hear. I think that's a good description of V's story in the battle. One thing I would enjoy seeing is if V's character development allows him/her to thwart the IFCC's plans as a result of lessons learned from his/her disastrous mistakes, but I'm sure wherever Rich does take the story will be good.

    And that last point is the key. To "trump" someone strongly implies that the usual tactical details are irrelevant.
