No, I think it's just a theme. In the Everfree, everything is Australian. Good odds the cragodile is as much hungry rocks as it is stone skinned reptile. Of course, Celestia can embody all of those things as demonstrated earlier in the episode.

Yep! It actually really fits on Luna's part. Celestia, I'm Less convinced on, personally. Generosity and kindness I get, but magic? I dunno. I think magic should have remained the mystery element, a combination of the others which emerges under certain conditions. As a standard elemental loses some of the implied potency of 'the spark' that comes from friendship uniting the other elements.

Honestly, Laughter seems a little weird on the mare who didn't quite seem to grasp the concept of "fun". Then again, I suppose her sanity might have taken a hit from a thousand years on the moon...

The actual word 'fun' might not have existed a thousand years ago in the same context.

Also, consider that Luna's life so far had been conflict, duty and passion, station and war. She was royalty, it was valuable and necessary that she maintain her position for the good of the other ponies. Letting her hair down and relaxing, around ponies who spent a long time literally trembling in her presence? Trying to loosen up and cut a rug amongst people who make you uncomfortable, whisper behind your back and who constantly put you off ease, when it's so easy to put them back in their place?

That's hard.

As an aside, something just occured to me.

Why does Luna have a dark flank with a moon on it? The dark splotch was, as I understand it, a result of her having given into the darkness and become Nightmare Moon. I realize that they'd just want to keep the art consistent with the different Luna imagery, but seeing it again just strikes me as strange.

That was fan supposition. There has been no official word on it, and Luna has canonically always displayed that splotch.

No, Faust was pretty good about doing just the bare minimum so people didn't develop expectations.

I think the crown looks a bit cheap. The gold is thin and the overall feel of the piece is fragile like lace. Which is odd, since the element of magic crown wasn't exactly the pinnacle of sturdy engineering principles. Nevertheless, this new crown feels cheaper to me, like there's just not that much material used for its construction.

I don't think it looks bad though. It's much more "this is my crown for special occasions" and looks less natural on Twilight. But it makes her stand out and the coloration works with her, so I don't have an issue there.

The fragility of it is part and parcel to it being a tiara, though. The implied delicacy is part of what folks expect from a princessly piece of jewelry. You may recall all the folks who made cracks about the, uh, "sturdiness" of Twilight's original elemental crown.

Hmm, well the fact that it's a Tiara is going to make it look like Diamond Tiara's Tiara to some degree. It's still gold and not silvery metallic, so I don't think that's really an issue. They have different mesh patterns too, they're just both tiaras.

I like the ice-feel of it, personally. The warm gold and magenta hues, and the almost crystalline structure, are reminiscent of the Crystal Empire. I think that's a pretty appropriate thing for the crown to infer, it sort of thematically connects the royals.

But as I think about it, Twilight will likely not wear even the new crown since she's that kind of humble princess that just wants to be like one of the gang. Because she is one of the gang. Just with more plumage.

Phase one is a distributed computing task, where the fans put their computers to work helping with supercomputing tasks folding proteins for Rosetta@Home.

I'm now imagining a sitcom starring a group of disguised changelings trying to get hitched.

The season three finale twist is two or three of them end up marrying each other! Shenanigans ensue!

Actually, I had an idea. If Changelings are not limited to pony disguises what is stopping a Changeling from disguising itself as say, a fluffy puppy, and endearing itself to a young filly?

Also, they are limited to pony-forms. The changeling look we have is apparently their terrifying war form, not their real form.

Man. I know it's quibbles, but these things always irritate me. One, "a brony is an adult make fan of" why? A which an isn't a middle aged female fan of Who. Trekkie isn't a young Caucasian fan of Star Trek, a listener isn't a black Jewish fan of Night Vale. So why is everyone insistent on splitting pony hairs? Why build in qualitative titles? That intrinsically says that there is a normal pony fan, and these aren't it. That's always stuck in my craw.

I'm also irked at the insistence that defiance of gender norms is part and parcel of the Why of BronyDom, that people aren't just doing it for love of the show. No, each and every person in this thread made the conscious decision to stop and be a rebel against heteronormative sexist views, and that's important. It's not emergent at all, it's not a thing which occured to decent people who put thought into it, it's just a flag to rally under.

Ugh. Social engineering irritates me so bad sometimes. Forcing perceived causation between these different things just compartmentalizes it all into a neat throwaway box so people don't have to bother thinking about them.

Eh, it's distance seems to vary a lot on what the plot demands, you've got bits like Return of Harmony where it seems like they got there in just a few minutes/an hour or two.

I don't know, I always felt it had an established distance/time, and that while there may have been instances of time-lapse there weren't instances of distance being ignored. Not really.

We simply don't know the limits of Twi's teleport. She's spammed very short-ranged ones in song and can cross a town with it, but there just isn't any concrete data on the limits of it. We can assume Celestia teleports from Canterlot to Ponyville in "Lesson Zero" once she got the message from Spike.

Since Twi is now an alicorn as well, she may be able to accomplish that distance with some practice.

Twiley has failed once, and had backlash once, so we can extrapolate. She has also failed to catch a quickly moving, erratic object. Speed, grouping, distance and stress all make it harder. Celestia teleporting in may have been from Canterlot, but I don't think anyone would find Celestia having skill at magic surprising.

We'll see I guess.

The dark black-lit magic with green glow had been referred to as dark magic among lots of circles I was hanging with during the old Sombra episodes. So if I see that specific aura, I'm calling it dark magic, not alicorn magic (You can call it whatever you like, but I'm sticking to my lexicon because it sounds cooler).

Also, dark magic does not mean evil. I think of dark magic as the kind of spells/abilities that manipulate light and trick the mind, such as illusions and shadow conjurations (for want of a D&D comparison).

Dark in the sense of chthonic would work, but I'm still hung up on it being a justification, grasping at straws. Clearly, you'll have to write a fix that reconciles these things. Only way to put the matter to rest. u_u

In the pilot, none of the ponies knew much of anything about the elements. When twilight makes the connection about friendships, the shards went to their respective ponies and became the element necklaces that we knew them as for three seasons. In a way, its like the elements choose them once they understood what the magic reall was, and Twi might be thought of as an element herself that attuned to her friends.

Sides, the elements choose their cutie marks for the new form. If it's ponies attuning to the elements, why bother changing the form?

They needed new forms anyway. The elements were reforged by the mane six, that alone is sufficient for their marks to be imprinted onto them.

Mostly though, I'm just directing people to look at their assumptions to avoid falling into the trap of discussing ponies less and discussing ponies as a vague 3.5 setting more. Items, spells, casters, levels, and all that have inherent assumptions that make things look incongruous, even when those things make sense without those assumptions.

Man, Season 4 is going to be pretty great if they keep up this level of quality. Some of the dialogue was a little repetitive/awkward, and the twist was predictable (Of course, that is hardly unusual for this series) but it was otherwise hilarious.

That was really really good. Only problem was the idiot ball moment in the Everfree by the Mane 6. Which admitedly was incredibly stupid. Seems like they could have gotten rid of that part alltogether and expanded something else. Well it resulted in more Discord scenes so I'll give it a pass.

Dammit, Pinkie! I was wondering why she wasn't going to the castle, but then I honestly forgot about it and was genuinely surprised when she was revealed.

Overall, it was an okay episode. I can't quite put my hoof on it, but something about it makes me reluctant to upgrade that statement. I think maybe the characters felt a bit flat. Pinkie probably did the best, with Rarity second, but the others ... idk. Maybe I should watch it again when I'm less tired, see if it helps.

I'm less surprised that the library is still intact after a thousand years (magic, obviously) than I am at the fact that Celestia never had the books moved. Something must have kept her from doing so, and everyone else from looting it too. I didn't see any speculation about this so far. Anyone got any ideas? Maybe it's the same reason the Elements were never moved either.

More and more, I feel that Twilight's increased height takes away from her appeal. Even though it's a fairly small increase, it makes her look too tall and awkward, less cute and adorkable. There's also too much flashing those new wings. I imagine they want to show that she's excited about them, because they're new to her, or conversely that her excitement in general is expressed with her wings, or both, but I think it's getting a bit much. I don't think even Rainbow Dash flaunts her wings that much.

I am really disappointed about the bee suits. I guess that means Granny Smith wins the contest of most daring pony, 'cause she didn't need no suit to be friendly with them bees. I wonder how Fluttershy would do in that contest?

I'm curious about the star spiders. Seems odd that they were mentioned like this but then weren't mentioned again. Maybe they will play a role throughout the season? Maybe it's their season in more than one way, maybe they're related to the overarching storyline.

The diary felt a bit like a tease, like there should have been more. Same with the spiders, really, although I don't care so much about the spiders because they're a new thing. In fact I think the first three episodes so far have suffered a bit from this, perhaps because they're only setting us up for more to come later in the season. Maybe that's part of what's slightly bothering me, this sense that the episodes so far are only really setting the stage for other episodes to come.

I don't see why a diary would contain information about something Celestia didn't know about. The Spiders might come up again, it seems like they've got more to do in the castle still. I think Celestia just sent Twilight there to research the old library. She wasn't expecting Twilight to snoop in her diary. Also I imagine everything was abandoned cause Celestia couldn't bear to stay there.

As for the AppleDash, I don't see it. A living hoof wraps around her neck, why would she not assume it was Applejack, the only living pony she knew was in the castle? Particularly since she didn't want to think there was a shadow pony present.

I think I'm one of the rare few who didn't automatically realise that it was Pinkie - I spent the whole ep thinking it was Luna, and wondering why they decided not to bring Pinkie in. *facehoof*

I'm pretty sure the eyes on the shadow thing are just a reused 'spooky eyes' effect - or did Zecora have the same effect applied after the 'reveal' that she isn't evil?

Also, did NMM always have fangs? I don't know why, but I think I'd assumed they were just an odd touch added for Nightmare Night - the public's interpretation of the character, rather than the actual manifestation itself. I should probably rewatch season one at some point.

I'm pretty sure the eyes on the shadow thing are just a reused 'spooky eyes' effect - or did Zecora have the same effect applied after the 'reveal' that she isn't evil?

Zecora had the same gold eye effect, just to make the point that the ponies perceive her to be evil. So, could be that again, or it could just be reused animation because it's cheaper that way.

A WoT is still just a wall. Turn your Bag of Holding inside-out, place it over your head, and walk right through it.
