Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
"Wanna make out?"
What? Didn't Elan just get an awesome prc class? Isn't he a bard? Isn't he filled with tales of hero and princess? And "wanna make out?" is the best pre-romantic evening line he can muster?
What?!

You are aware of this concept called "irony," right?

You know, sometimes just being straightforward is the best tack a person can take.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
He is Elan, if he would have said anything else it would have been really out of character and then I would have been really upset. Elan saying: «I love you too sweetheart» is impossible and a bit stupid.
Beside romance is kinda a lawfull concept. They are both chaotic, being straightforward is normal for them.In memory of lord Shojo

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
I thought that was out of character...
It seemed much too blunt and aware of the situation. Like oh, romantic situation; ask if she wants to make out. Like he's almost going through the motions. Which, for a romantic scene, is horrible!avatar by kuja.girl

I liked it. Simple and to the point. Sometimes it's better to go with the bare minimum.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
Ever since I read 1984, no turn of plot has seemed terrible to me. Heck, compared to 1984, the ending of 2001: A Space Odessy actually feels emotionally satisfying.
It could be much worse. Trust me.
EDIT: Okay, so maybe that wasn't very clear. What I'm trying to say is, no matter how bad this one line in strip 400 might seem, there are renowned works of fiction out there with far more painful and irking turns of event in them than this. You just gotta learn to roll with it.Last edited by Parasocrates; 2007-01-13 at 12:50 AM.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
An "I love you too" with a knowing smile would of been perfect for me. Especially after she's ranting about how to forget about it and everything. One of those, "I'm not listening to you because what you're saying is stupid." things.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
He probably thinks that that is what bards say! :) Or dashing swordsmen, for that matter.
Remember when he was with the bandit chieftess... I wonder what he said in that situation, but it probably wasn't any more classy!
And hey, okay, so it wasn't the most romantic of things, but it worked! And they'll probably stay together and get more opportunity for cuteness (like holding hands! I can so see that) later.
Hee hee, I just realized that this opens a whole new level of possibilities for gags. People getting tired of seeing them together all the time....

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
Elan isn't romantic.
That's the point.
He has a class that allows him to APE romance but he's still the guy who says "It's in the bard's charter to seduce an 18 year old sorceress."

Yes but seduce enemy sorcerer and kissing Haley are totally opposite things.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
... who's Lord Bryon?
And frankly, I think Elan said the most appropriate thing he could in that situation. 1) Because it's Haley. And as girly as Haley frequently is, I just don't see her as that much of a romantic type. And 2) it's exactly the opposite of what Nale pulled, which is exactly what she needs right now."...so as it turned out, it was a really good thing I took those ranks in Craft: Leatherworking. And that's the story of how I became a blackguard."

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
Its Lord Byron, isn't it? Not that it matters--no one wants him involved, anyway.
The "Wanna Make Out" thing was better. They already had an super-romantic kiss, so Elan's PrC was sated, and I doubt Haley and Elan really needed any more atmosphere before they proceded.
Besides, it was funny.Tallest member of the fanclub.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
I thought that he was just being as straight forward as possible because here was Haley, trying to legalize the whole thing and stressing out about it as usual and he was attempting to keep her from freaking out about it as he suspected she would. He was simplifying the situation for her, or so I thought.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
Animal Farm hurt more than 1984.
Elan went in entirely the opposite direction. Makes enough sense. Everything drama-related that Elan does is completely off. Standing in front of an exploding mountain for no other reason than theatrics, and stating it as so? If anything, Elan is being too suave as it is!Belkar's Bad to the Bone.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
What? The whole concept that people might given the chance do just as terrible things to others as was done to them was creepier than the concept pf a man having every throught, belief, love and reason wripped from him by slow torture and ind manipulation intile he totally believed everything he had been told the the extent that he could truely deny reality and then being executed? Eh I suppose it all I about who you are. I couldn't think of anything scarier than losing my convictions.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
I should also say that it makes sense when you look at it from this side of the fourth wall. Haley has been stressing and stressing over it forever, and overcomplicating the matter in her own mind. Elan's straightforward and simplistic view on things is a good balance for this. We've been dealing with Haley's views on romance for a ton of strips, and have even had quite a few full pages dedicated to it, whereas for Elan it was simple enough to state in one panel.
I hope I'm being clear about this.
Besides, romance is just another way of lying to one another. Like this it's much healthier relationship-wise.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
I hear Lord Bryon is partying out there with Oscer Widle, Wiliam Shakespeer and Leonardio Da Vinchy.
Elan's reaction was just right. It was right for Elan and it was right for situation. Haley was about to present him with a Gordian Knot of emotions, feelings and justifications. Poor girl must've run through that scenario thousands of times, trapped in her aphasia and l. And Elan cut through that in a clean stroke, and in a way that only Elan could've gotten away with.
Really, from my perspective, Elan is not good enough for her. His naiveté and innocence are that of a child. But that is what appeals to Haley, and that is what she got.
Oh, and I always thought Brave New World was a better vision of the future, and that Animal Farm is Orwell's best workLast edited by fwiffo; 2007-01-13 at 03:34 PM.

Re: Lord Bryon Is Turning Over In His Grave
Simple is good. We've had so very much melodrama on this the last few weeks already. Everyone needs to take a breather sometimes.
