That happens so often in Borderlands 1 that characters in game complain about it. Been a long time since I played the first, since the good parts were the DLCs that took place after the main plot, which wasn't exactly a good thing.

I'm just glad it's getting a follow-up. When I was playing through Riptide and my Sam B started having his Hulk moments, I really started wanting to know what happens next with the mutation plague... and the major plot threads from the first game that were purposely untouched in Riptide.

I just hope the new one does something about my major complaints, like how my favorite weapon type in all of Riptide (staff) only dropped for me twice in the 10+ hours I put into the game, both of them green quality.

And random tags added by Steam users *can* be trusted? Also, is there any way to remove a tag once added? A game might be released in a "broken" state and later become perfectly playable, but if that "broken" tag remains on it then it's an unfair assessment of the game.

Re: Dead Island: If I have a wish for the next Dead Island, it's the same one I have for the next Borderlands: please release a new game, not just a overlarge expansion pack! Apart from the ability to drive boats and the punchy punchy character Riptide didn't have much new, and it was quite a bit shorter than the first game too. Overall, if I were to sit down and replay a Dead Island game, I'd be more likely to replay the first one than Riptide.

You might be hurt to learn that it's a MOBA, then.

But it does some really neat stuff. For example:

    • The main mode, Scavenger, does not have lanes. Instead, it plays more like Dominion, but instead of letting points generate as you capture targets, you gather supplies that are dropped when you initially capture flags (as well as the gradual bleed of supplies). You deliver those to your truck (1500 supply crates total) to win.
    • There are no minions. Instead, mobs (zombies) are hostile to everyone. In addition to this, serious threats, like Floaters and Shriekers (yeah, they're back) can show up with mobs, frequently appearing while capturing flags.
    • It's 4v4v4 instead of 5v5. The first team to win will automatically leave upon winning, leaving the remaining teams to duke it out for scraps. You win more for getting first place in Scavenger.

No, I'm really not joking. It's advertised as a ZOMBA.

If it's any consolation, it's pretty good.

I don't think you can. I looked into it earlier and so far it seems you can only get access to the game thru the bundle package, with the f2p option coming later.

Edit: from the hawken site faq

WHEN CAN I PLAY THE GAME ON STEAM?
Everyone who created a HAWKEN account prior to February 4th has been sent a product code that can be used to download and play the game on Steam. New users can gain access by purchasing a bundle starting Friday, February 14th.

You can't download it yet, it's in the last phases of beta. You can buy the NEMESIS bundle, which I believe gives you Early Access, however.

Refrain from buying the bundle for now. Unless you like the exclusive cosmetic items, you'll have an easier time just outright unlocking the mechs.

I speak from experience; I have a couple hours in, and six (maybe five? Seven?) mechs total.

Pretty much. If it's cheap enough, it's well worth a play-through. There just isn't a whole lot of replayability.

The game mechanics pretty much consist of "drill downwards, mine minerals, fight monsters, run through the periodic Metroid-style puzzle room, then go back to town and upgrade your stuff."

That is quite a bit you can tell us, what with being under an NDA and all.

The second point sounds a bit weird. The third one is interesting. I've been hoping for a similar mode to be added to one of the existing MOBAs I've played, but no luck so far.

The zombies are actually a pretty neutral force, and their presence does change up the game. An interesting sidenote is proportions: playable characters are a lot bigger than zombies for the purpose of making them easy to distinguish. On top of that, special zombies are far bigger than everyone else (especially the Ram, who is an absolute titan of a zombie), again for the purpose of making them easy to distinguish.

As for the latter, it makes the Dominion-esque mode a lot more interesting, as one team won't necessarily dominate the other when there are three forces actively against each other.

Just as long as there won't be special chat commands to speak only to one other team directly rather than just having to /all, otherwise you may end up with deals being cut to eliminate a specific team first. Of course, that may still happen, but communication for that is either a lot harder (if you cannot use chat for it) or everyone knows about it (if you use an all chat for it).

Is Hero Siege a good recommendation? Looks like a top-down Rogue Legacy, so I'm intrigued. Also on sale.

So I just finished Our Darker Purpose. "Finished", that is. I still have lore to hunt for, story to piece together, hard mode, achievements/upgrades to collect, bosses to see, items I haven't found yet... I'll be at this a while, and I'm fine with that.
