Incidentally, the silver idea is clever, and would have been mildly amusing. Plus, retaliation is kind of impossible- I mean, you literally would have buried him in gifts.

That aside, there are a number of in character reasons for bringing so much stuff. The first is a matter of politeness, and the second is based on notions of cultural superiority. They can't have Korath living the life of an impoverished and uncultured foreigner!
