    At last freed from the requirements of her position as regent, Idrisa wasted no time in assuring that her reign as Queen of Ashenia would be as glorious as it was brief. She and her eldest son, Prince Shenath, spent much of the next five years on horseback meeting with regional dignitaries, holding court to familiarise the populace with the notion of an Ashenite ruler and performing acts of charity in the poorest regions of the realm. The process was long and hard, especially due to the Queen's advanced years, but in the end the Kingdom of Ashenia was as secure as Idrisa could make it for her son's rule, she had but one final act to perform.
    But first, she had to deal with the ever looming threat of war.

    Fluff...yea internship says no, ecept for this: the pussdeath isolation continues for the most part with travelers that spend sufficient time in quarantine first allowed in.

    The sun appears to have become approximately 20% bigger, but not cooler.

    Ayava is lit up brighter than before, and during the day the rays of the sun somehow manage to reach down through the cracks in the dry earth. Ayava’s import necessity of Light is temporarily negated.

    Columbo Fiassa has discovered a staff decorated with geode shards and feathers. The geode shards glow when near water and the staff can shoot blasts of fire after being partially submerged.

    The fire strikes into Heaven’s Blade come from the northeast, across Calorum, from where the Heartwaste lies. Heaven’s Blade’s peak has been reduced to nigh a sliver of rock compared to its former glorious self as a hole has been blasted nearly through it by now.

    The lands of the nation of Scla’ca and all they had now fall under the same banner as their brethren of Alydaxis! Hail the lizardfolk nation!

    The Glazfell Hegemony has acquired Drugaud! Formerly known as the GLWIH, or region 52.

    The Salterri evidently feel it has taken long enough. By the summer of 392, they begin their assault of Cassia with 12000 naval troops and 12000 ground forces. Their remaining navy continue to blockade Valterre and Errelosse.

    3000 of Tekorva's troops rebel against the new regime! The remaining 1000 have disbanded. Perhaps Kuramkesh has acquired their loyalty, or some faint remainder of the Yorukunin aristocracy?

    Terror!
    The summers have been getting hotter, springs dryer, autumns stormier and winter is barely known in recent years on the central continent. Famine plagues the land as many of the crops wither and die. Animals, wild and domesticated, are hit just as hard as the sapient races. Bereginia, Nyroth, Zargrim, Eyrecradia, Sulvan’s Fury, Requiem, Rannara, The Heartwaste are all hit hard by this, as their small amounts of native resource can no longer be compensated for through imports. Kasumor, Hrathan-Tuor, Grizzland, Raaneka, Elbaraz, Pryonia, Bordeux are hit even harder, as people die of hunger and thirst.

    Kasumor loses 2000 population. Hrathan-Tuor loses 4000 population. Grizzland loses 1000 population. Raaneka loses 3000 population. Elbaraz loses 3000 population. Pryonia loses 3000 population. Bordeux loses 1000 population. Wenyavuk gains 2000 population.

    All export of food resources on the central continent (regions 1-20) is hereby temporarily ineffective.

    While it doesn’t feel more than a hot summer’s day among hot summer’s days on any day of the year, any true ice and tears of Yphine brought to the central continent melts under exposure of the sunlight.

    The militants throughout the continent unfurl their banners…
    They proclaim themselves allies to the humble people of Telluris and the divine justice that guides their fate. Ordinary men, women and children join their camps, many of lowborn status. Camps rise up in Gunung, Woodwind, Calorum, Hrathan-Tuor, Lyradis, Guilder and Bordeux, most appearing like those of nomads, but less organized.
    A force of 1000 of the militants rises in Bordeux. Most prominent among them are several members of the main house of the Finir family. They are joined by a least twice their number from both Gunung and Celero.

    A veritable army of 6000 in Pryonia pledge their spears and lances to the new cause.

    The Burning Legion of Calorum pales in comparison to the amount in the camps in their lands as they are joined by thousands of Woodwind and Hrathanesse people, totalling 13000.

    9000 of them from Lyradis and 6000 from Guilder march upon the Blazing Temple. Several Guilderenes bear religious marketing plans upon their person.

    A thousand of them rise in Kasumor. No children are among their number. When moving to the camp in Calorum, they are rejected. Fighting occurs between them in which hundreds are killed before they retreat.

    Princess Encir arrives in the Glazfell! Or rather, just her head, carefully wrapped up in a bundle of leathers that are bloody on the inside. Her eyes have been closed. No note is with the package.


    Infection!
    Pusdeath infection spread:
    Raaneka
    Grizzland (region 30); 1000 civilians lost.
    Region 33; attributed to either the aid of Lyradis or the power of Ascension, the pusdeath has disappeared from this region. Some natives have begun to see Lady Lyra as a saint of their new faith, admirable enough to demand a shrine in their capital city.

    The first Tarcbjorn play to be enacted in the new Wenyavuk playhouses donated by the Sympol is one of his old ones, entitled A Summer’s Day, in light of recent pleasant climate coming to the region—at least the southern half. Some Na’nuk find this a pleasant development and see it as a sign of a bright future for their children.

    Two Dusk Knights have been found slain in the narrow streets of Water’s Watch.

    Nagier Black Hand has died under classified circumstances. Mormaer Razkai II is hospitalized under similar conditions.

    A dance festival in Felitora has drawn a lot of visitors from neighbouring lands.

    On the border of Maos and Rannara, two families have begun a large feud. A mountain there had crumbled due to an earthquake, and a family of miners began work on it, being hindered by a bunch of sky-leapers who had used the mountain for their coming-of-age ritual for… well, ages. It has escalated so dramatically to the point that surrounding people don’t know whether to call in armed forces or a bard to write a song about it.

    On that note, some folk in the northernmost regions have begun a song-writing contest upon hearing of Sympol’s desire for an anthem.

    It is not the desire of any ruler to have war come to their lands, it is for this reason I have dispatched troops to Cassia to aid the Salterri recovery of their sovereign and sacred lands. Though I understand it is the desire of the Concordat to retain these lands it cannot be abided that thievery of the sovereign land of another remain unpunished in a civilized era. Just the same shedding the blood of another man cannot be tolerated by those states that deem themselves civil without the utmost justification, which, if the land is surrendered to its rightful rulers, none may claim against the Bordeusi people. Let us carry this through with honor and restraint and see lands belonging to the rightful rulers restored without bloodshed that we might all come to an agreement of peace and brotherhood.

    My friend,

    As you may have heard, a few years ago a large ship foundered on the coast of the land known variously as Relic or Vennland [Region 64]. The vessel was recovered and found to be a Guilderene ship from the days before true ocean-going craft were developed. Over the last few years I have had my people examining the ship closely to learn what they can from it.

    I can confirm that the ship, named Mia Isabella, was the ship of Giorno Fiassa. By the time it was recovered it had been badly damaged, with one mast missing and the sail of the other torn. It appears to have been badly damaged by storms before being washed up on the rocks. There was no trace of the crew or captain.

    I believe we have learned everything we can from the ship, and I am sorry I cannot provide more certainty as to the fate of Captain Fiassa. My own ships are shortly to be dispatched to explore the southern ocean, and I shall report any findings relating to him.

    Given the age and condition of the ship I am advised it would not be prudent to attempt to refloat it, let alone return it to Guilder or its colonies. The timber is in poor shape and we have no shortage of it for building our own ships, so I propose to offer the shell of the Mia Isabella to serve as the headquarters of our own newly-established Company of Maritime Venturers, based in the harbour currently under construction at Horbeach. I have ordered the ship beached as an interim measure to prevent further damage from the elements.

    Participants: Salterri Imperium, Kingdom of the Jarrs

    Preamble: The Salterri Imperium exists as a unified empire with the goal of bringing peace, order, and civilization to the world. All provinces and protectorates of the empire agree to abide by the following requirements.

    1. Leadership
    1. Loyalty to the Qzare is absolute. As ruler of the Imperium, the Qzare maintains ultimate authority over the empire. The Qzare agrees never to rule unilateraly without the input of the Senate and provincial Governors unless necessary for the preservation of the Imperium.
    2. Regions under direct control of the Silver Throne shall retain their native leadership and traditional native methods of leader selection. Said leader is granted the Imperial Title of Provincial Governor and may use this title for all legal purposes. Traditional local titles for leadership may be retained and legally used, provided said titles are not Qzare, Emperor, Senator, or derivatives thereof.
    3. Protectorates of the Imperium shall retain their native leadership, provided that said leadership at time of acquisition meets with the approval of the Qzare. Traditional native methods of leader selection will be honored, but new leaders must be approved by the Qzare. Leaders of Imperial Protectorates are granted the Imperial Title of Provincial Lord and may use this title for all legal purposes. Traditional local titles for leadership may be retained and legally used, provided said titles are not Qzare, Emperor, Senator, Governour, or derivatives thereof.

    2. Military
    1. A Legion is defined as 1,000 armed and expertly trained soldiers or equivalent thereof.
    2. Defensive Requirements
      1. All Provinces and Protectorates must maintain a minimum of 1 Legion standing army in each province.
      2. Each Provincial Governor must maintain a minimum additional force of 4 Legions ready to mobilize at a moment's notice to any region of the Imperium.
      3. Each Provincial Lord must maintain a minimum additional force of 2 Legions and no more than 4 Legions for the same purpose.
      4. The Imperium shall maintain a minimum of 1 Legion and no more than 4 Legions standing army in every province for the same purpose.
    3. Military Limitations
      1. The Imperium shall not house more then 4 Legions in any Province outside of the Homelands, except in times of war.
      2. Provincial Governors shall not raise unreasonable military forces, as determined by the Senate, except in times of war.
      3. Provincial Lords may not raise more than 2 Legions per provincial region in addition to the mobile force, except with permission in times of war.
    4. Requirements and Responsibilities
      1. No region will raise arms against another member of the Imperium, except in defense.
      2. No region will militarily invade lands belonging to nations outside of the Imperium, except in times of war.
      3. Should any region of the Imperium come under attack, all mobile forces as defined above shall immediately be sent to defend the populace.
      4. Regions incapable of supporting the minimums as laid out herein may be given special dispensation until such time as they can meet the requirements.

    3. Faith and Religion
    1. The state officially recognizes the following religions: Hailings of the Silver Sea; Ascension. The state officially endorses the Hailings of the Silver Sea.
    2. Provincial Governors must adhere to a state approved faith, if necessary openly and publicly converting prior to claiming a leadership role in any Province or Protectorate. Provincial Lords may continue to practice their original faith, but conversion is preferable.
    3. The clergy of all state approved faiths are granted autonomy to move through all Imperium lands spreading their beliefs without hindrance.
    4. Members of unapproved, traditional faiths may continue to practice their beliefs within their traditional lands; however, spreading of such faiths to other regions is strictly forbidden.
    5. No member of the Imperium may start or organize a new faith or religion.

    4. Trade, Resources, & Technology
    1. Imperial Provinces and Protectorates may make trade agreements as they see fit with the following requirements.
      1. If a region of the Imperium has need of a resource you can provide, you must offer the resource to that region before offering it to any nation outside of the Imperium.
      2. No trade agreements of any sort may be made with any nations declared to be an enemy of the Imperium.
      3. No technology of any kind may be given to any nation not belonging to the Imperium without approval of the Qzare or Senate.
    2. All acquired technologies are to be shared openly with all members of the Imperium, though recipients of the technologies may still be required to provide resources in payment for the technology.

    5. Representation
    1. All Provincial Governours and Provincial Lords have the right to attend or send a duly appointed representative to the Comitatus Judex Primus, Court of the Chief Magistrate of the Salterri Imperium. Here, leaders may petition the Imperium or have grievances addressed.

    Athelmark the Unifier, first king of the Jarrs, has died at the age of just 64. It is said that he never fully recovered from his daughter's death, and that recent news of the war in the west and the disappearance of his friends in Wenyavuk induced a fatal melancholy. He is succeeded by his brother Alfwyr, who as his first decree has ordered a monument constructed on the Atteltor to King Athelmark's memory.

    Lady Tempest of Clan Grant has given birth to a son, Atheldynn. King Alfwyr rejoices for the new addition to the royal family, but mourns that his brother did not live to see his first grandchild.

    • Earl Elster of Horbeach has been recalled from his embassy to the Comitatex, apparently for reasons of health. He is to be replaced by Oswyn Isling.
    • Lord Admiral Horwik has apparently sworn an oath to find the final resting place of Jonas Grumby. Those spreading the rumour claim this is to curry favour with Lady Grant.
    • An anonymous pamphlet has claimed that the son born to Lady Tempest was sired by a Raaneki gladiator. The king has commanded the author be found and tried for treason.

    Rumors have begun spreading that Patriarch Gloriosis the Ambitious is secretly the son of Chief Hierarch Zanper Fidious, born of his late wife. The Chief Hierarch has refused comment.


    In recent years, the disorganized peoples of the southern protectorate of Campestrus Pratum have been displaced by tribes of cow-like humanoids calling themselves "Minotines." In an effort to quell this incursion the Priory of Ascension sends aid to the human clans. Troops are dispatched to defend the clans against further encroachment by the bull-headed invaders while clergy work with the clan chieftains to organize a more stable form of government among themselves.

    「380 - City of Kings, Auf-Graundas, Halja」Pregame action I didn't get to last round
    Tail raised high, Aipiskaupus focussed on the Haljans before him. Raising his pincers in a threatening motion he pointed a clawed hand at each of the four females before him as they sidestepped around him for a better position. Swaying in time with the strikes of the hammers on Krystals he gripped his scythe and watched as another female joined the circle.
    It would seem I am not handsome enough to attract many... but I suppose Virux has given me enough to begin with.

    SCHHHNGG!

    The largest of the Haljan females falls to the floor, her head rolling toward Aipiskaupus' feet as the remaining females took a step back and lowered their pincers.

    Pathetic. She moved so early with such little preparation. She could have been a good mate...

    A sharp pain bites into one of his front legs as one of the females playfully nipped at him, barely leaping out of his reach in time. The rest of the females swayed enthusiastically as two more joined them. Raising both eyebrows Aipiskaupus readies his scythe and tries to keep all the females in his vision. After a few short exchanges of blows where Aipiskaupus remained untouched for the most part he lowers his tail slightly and clicks his pincers twice.

    The Haljan females pounced.

    「392 - Throthjans Hailjan, Auf-Graundas, Halja」
    Aipiskaupus Thuidans Kaiser looked reverently around himself at the superb architecture long before the official opening of the Throthjans Hailjan was to commence. Though it had taken many years to establish the academic side of it, it had taken much longer to build the building which would contain such noble work. He felt small as the clicking of his footsteps echoed through the large, arched hallways. Beyond the columns were several carved doors standing higher than twice his height. Were he to look up, the Kaiser would see the balcony where those on the second story may look down upon whatever the hall may be used for currently. Looking toward the end of the hallway, Aipiskaupus marvelled at the incredibly rare glass and the intricate patterns and colours which made up the windows.

    Indeed, Throthjans Hailjan was a great achievement and would serve Halja well for many years to come.

    「393 - The first cathedral of Laiks Riqis, just south of Axion, Halja」
    Though it had taken years to reach this stage, the cathedral was still a smooth, flat block of Darkstone in the centre of Halja. A few deep grey stones were arranged as though the entire thing were merely a large building plan rather than the beginnings of a building itself. Bokareis Thuidans surveyed the large empty cavern surrounding the cathedral. Though it was so far from civilization, this cathedral would become the central point for Laiks Riqis. Adjusting his stole with the Six Names and looking toward the Sky, he thinks of Stellyx in particular, may he provide a clear path as the Deity of Destiny.

    「394 - Eisswaggs, Halja」
    Apiskaupus Thuidans Kaiser looks out across Eisswaggs from the newly completed Niskovian Embassy upon the seething mass of black. From this distance he could not see, but he knew each female hand held a scythe or composite bow. Turning his back on the army, he raises an eyebrow at a Niskan who happened to be passing by.

    It would seem the Niskans wasted no time here. How efficient.

    Razkai was propped on his throne and swathed in a heavy cloak. His crown was still upon his head, but he drooped beneath the weight of it.
    "We must take… desperate measures. We have an untapped resource of food. Mushrooms, Vali, mushrooms. Andbar's Forest is ripe for exploitation."

    [Later the same year, The Mormaer's Hall, Razdis]
    "Oh, noble sediment, militants. Their burning faith is the only light they see, they are sun-blinded to all else. Send two battalions to guard the temple, but make not the first move. We are not aggressors, but wardens of the person of the Blazing Avatar and his monks."
    Silently an aide entered the hall, bearing two communiques, one from Bordeux. Razkai skimmed them, then swiftly drew up a reply.
    "Gentlemen, it seems the foul southrons have struck again. I shall send two battalions to the aid of Bordeux, ever our allies. Awake iron!"

That there might be more Heartwine available for the people, may shipment of Heartwine to the Jeweled Cities cease until the famine is done.

    "Our Cousins?!" The Queen was livid.

    "After extensive calculation," Dezarajacarita replied in his tiny voice, "we have determined that the Jeweled Cities will feel the loss least, and the lack of their gems for a few years will cause no harm. The rest of our trade goes to lands affected by the famine in kind. Surely, we would not deny them the bliss of our wine?"


    Year 392
    The Fourth Raaneki Games will begin in the city of Bandar of Many Colors in the Winter of 392. All nations are welcome to attend in peace.

    Progress on Celero's Bereginian Restoration continues thanks to the aid of our allies in Lyradis. Reports indicate that some Raaneki, amused by the differences in cultural personality, have taken a liking to the Celerese way and have decided to settle in the land. In particular, the Qarimosi among the construction guilds have grown fond of Celero's many fishing villages, and their music is more welcome there with each passing year.

    Queen Anguri mused at Princess Calaki's latest purchase, a large blanket made of dark fur. "It's dark. You will have trouble with love stains." She and the Princess shared a good laugh at the idea.

    Deep beneath the North Moors, where Grand Delving could escape the sun's heat but not its light, a cabal of gnomes gathered in a chamber of Flickerhall.

    "You have been summoned together because of your vaunted proficiency in observation and illumination." Dezarajacarita and Anagatavati handed an identical scroll to each of them. "The object of our study is detailed within this scroll," said Deza. He gestured toward a fire of berunda feathers in the corner. "I know it is not the way of our people to destroy script, but for this we must make an exception. Burn the wisdom into your mind, then burn the wisdom.
    Astraniz."

    "
    Astraniz," each of the gnomes whispered in response. "Kindle Excellence."

    Year 395
    After nearly fifteen years of research through the records of Flickerhall and those of lands beyond, Deep Scholar Dezarajacarita has completed Toward the Dawn, a record of the Raaneki from their earliest days. May his original copies with its beautiful illuminations be preserved in the depths of Flickerhall, but may the printing presses of Qarimos duplicate the text for the betterment of all.

    "You mean to... duplicate it?" It was hard to believe such offense could come from Deza's small frame. "Duplicate the slow and studious work of these, my own hands?"

    "Please," replied Prince Jacob. "We meant no harm! We would share the wisdom of your hands with any who would read it. Is this not desirable?"

    It took long hours of debate in the Ayavan fashion, but in time Anagatavati cooled the head of her colleague.

    391: Celebrations and ceremonies erupt across Ashenia. Hazaria, Kyaralath and Angan Anvale have been officially and formally recognised as part of the Kingdom of Ashenia with their people being granted the same rights as Ashenites.
    The Queen and her son, Prince Shenath, spend much of the following year travelling to various towns and cities across the realm to participate in the general merry-making.

    At one such event, a feast held at the Citadel of The Wise in Gran Kyara, the Queen of Ashenia has chosen to take the opportunity to speak with The Wise and other Kyaran dignitaries. A pair of strange individuals, perhaps wishing to take this opportunity for an audience with Queen Idrisa II, arrive at the feast as they had said they would. Unfortunately, she is deep in conversation with Azhen, High Priest of Carasan. As such, a court functionary, the Lady Imasera, steps forward to handle the meeting.
    She bowed respectfully to Gultha Thuidans and addressed him politely in Ashenite before switching to the Langue d'Argento and taking the offered tray.
    "My sincerest apologies that My Sovereign is unable to speak with you at this time. Her Majesty assured The Wise that they would have her full undivided attention for the course of this evening. However, I will present your message to her before she retires for the evening."
    Lady Imasera bowed her head briefly before continuing, hoping her confusion and slight shock at such unusual visitors wasn't showing.
    "Please, feel free to partake of some food and drink. My Sovereign will be in touch."
    Those with an inhuman ability to notice things would likely see that Queen Idrisa's eyes glanced briefly over to the Haljan and Visyknin visitors in the middle of her conversation about temple restoration works.

    392: Imports of bronze, and more importantly its main ingredient copper, flood into Kyaralath. Much of this material is used to fulfil mundane tasks, but a substantial quantity is made into religion talismans and icons. There is even talk of using it in upcoming temple restoration works.

    393: Astronomers at Severikand, having observed the heavens and studied ancient texts for decades, feel at last confident in their abilities to interpret the signs held within. Before announcing their discoveries, they successfully predict a minor earthquake in far off Angan Anvale. Their success draws much attention from the Throne and they receive royal support for their work.

    394: Lightning strikes the highest point of the Rotan Palace as the Kingslayer occults the Star of Ashenia. It is predicted that a royal death will occur within five years.

    Meanwhile, In Angan Anvale, farmers who no longer need to fear their fields being burned by the forces of Hartigan Biûrkahâd are able to increase the amount of land under cultivation without needing to keep a constant watch. This they turn over to the growing of sugar cane. Needless to say, the sweet crystals the plant yields are instantly popular among both the wealthy and common classes in Ashenia. Never before has such a delicious and versatile foodstuff been found.

    395: The army of Ashenia strikes into the mountains of Lacertia, ostensibly to prevent a bloody civil war, but predominantly to protect Ashenite interests in that region. It is hoped that superior military strategy combined with mithril armour and weaponry will ensure victory over the fractured Lacertians.

    The wedding of Jonatan of Almstedt to Lady Syuzanna was the royal extravaganza of the decade. There was barely room in the Raykhenbakh Palace's main hall for all the dignitaries and nobles that had shown to witness the event. This was hardly surprising as it had taken Syuzanna almost six years to find a partner she felt suitable to join the royal house.

    When the ceremony was concluded Vanya found a moment to talk with his sister.

    "I was starting to think that this day would never come." Vanya smiled and embraced his sister.

    "Don't be silly, it just took me a while to convince Jonatan that we were meant to be."

    Vanya stepped back and looked his sister over. "You look absolutely radiant, Lord Almstedt has no idea how lucky he is."

    Syuzanna blushed then changed the subject. "Have you seen Artem? I was sure he was here earlier."

    "We had a fight and he left," Vanya said regretfully. "I did try not to, for your sake."

    His sister smiled unconvincingly, "It's alright, I understand how things are between you."

    The High Prince was surprised to see his brother Artem at the palace. It had been 2 years since they last spoke, their formerly close relationship having deteriorated when their father Valerian passed the crown to Vanya.

    "Vanya, there is something I must tell you."

    Vanya listened in shock as his brother told him that he had married 15 months ago and that his wife had just given birth to a daughter.

    "You eloped? And not with Lady Korošec? I cannot believe that I am hearing this, do you even think about what your actions say about our house?"

    "I was hoping that you would support me brother."

    "You do not even realise the position that you've put me in do you?" Vanya sighed in exasperation. "Very well, I will acknowledge Anastazija as a daughter of this house but you will smooth things over with the Korošecs."

    Artem looked pleased, obviously satisfied that things had gone his way this time. He thanked his brother, then left.

    'And he wonders why father passed him by,' Vanya thought to himself as he watched Artem leave.

    With the completion of the Vodoprovod aqueducts cross the Niskovian Steppe bringing a guaranteed supply of fresh water to every town is Niskovia. Running water is available in all substantial private dwellings and fountains and cisterns are available for public use. The anticipated benefits to the standard of living for an average Niskan are great in number.

    Also thanks to the completion of this project, engineers are more prevalent than ever.

    Vilindrae Divinorum had summoned the Council of Truth to discuss the problems that threatened both Calorum and possibly the stability of those who follow the Lord of Fire.

    'This increase of heat from the almighty sun has blistered our lands and has lead to an disbandment of common cause. There are armies of militants gathering in our lands. At a time like this we must have faith in the Lord, His power is stronger now since it grows with the power of the sun. Therefore we shall now ask him for a favor, He who has never let down His people, He who is the power of life itself. We shall ask for his guidance and assistance. Here now our prayer, Oh Lord, and aid us in a time of despair:

    Lord, oh mighty and wise, show us your will. Show us what you would have your servants do. Show us so that we may please you most sincere. But Lord, please guard your sheep from the blistering and scarring heat of the sun. There are many who would deny your presence but do not punish those whose faith lies with you. Show us your intentions so that we may help you and bring the faith back to all of man, who you have shaped and favored to populate the world. Show us your intentions and allow us one more chance to show you that we are eternally loyal to you. Oh Lord almighty save us please.'


    All the other priests had risen and chanted an old sacred song. For a moment the extraordinary heat of the sun felt like a blanket of peace and revelation, before it turned to its former heat of blistering and despair again.
    They could only hope the Lord had heard them and would come to their aid....
