Default [IC] Crestfallin' - The Land of Magical Adventure!

Your search for the stolen Signet Ring has brought you to Crestfallin'. You know your target is a certain sneaky little Gnome. But where would a sneaky little Gnome go in such a huge Planar Metropolis? Better yet, how do you locate such a sneaky, singular little Gnome in a huge city? You find yourself in the Market district, the hustle and bustle of the merchants fill the air as they look to unload their wares and make their profits for the day.

    Spoiler: Skye & Syviraux
    Show
"Fresh off the boat" so to speak, you find yourselves in the Crestfallin' Harbour. You've just arrived in this remarkably large city, looking for what, I can't answer. Perhaps this is a fresh start, the employment you need to make a living for yourself. Finding a job working behind a bar counter, serving some of the more unruly and drunk sailors that stop by every night for drinks. One thing is for sure, you have not much coin in your purse and funds will dwindle at an alarmingly fast rate without a means to replenish them if you don't find work - or dreams of adventure...The Adventurer's Guildhall takes up it's residence right here in the Harbour district, privy to many adventurers, like yourselves, just looking for that "next big haul".

    Spoiler: Reaven Umtracus
    Show
Your search for battle has led you to the Arena district of Crestfallin'. A need to prove yourself and hone your skills in honourable combat (or perhaps less scrupulous methods?) driving your ambitions. You stand in front of two doors - one leads to the barracks the combatants would enter through, the other leads to the stands where the spectators would sit, urging either combatant to to dismantle the other in the most bloody, gory manner possible! Which door to choose...is up to you.

    Spoiler: Tenhelrim
    Show
So...what brings a specialist of the dead to such a Majestic centrepiece of a nation such as Crestfallin'? Is it a cult? Do you seek to locate a cult of similar, like-minded Necromancers to practice and share such dark secrets with, in the hopes of achieving great power? You find yourself in the centre of the Market district, perhaps looking for those similar to yourself who may or may not stand out from the crowds. Of course, while Crestfallin' itself is a forgiving nation, you know better than to openly ask strangers about Necromantic arts or cults. So...where to now?

    Spoiler: Rowan Arc
    Show
You find yourself in the holy halls of Heironeous, the God of Valour himself. Your fellow clergymen conducting services, praying for the sick or less fortunate who would enter, and even educating those not in "the know" about the strict, rigid ways of justice that Heironeous advocates for! The High Priest Danielson calls you to his office for a task. He explains about the recent influx of minor crimes of late, and how the city constabulary is...pre-occupied with other, more pressing matters, and likewise you have been tasked with recovering an object for the church. It is a Signet Ring, requested by one of the locals who seemed to have had it stolen before arriving to this city. The thief, it is said, has gone into hiding somewhere in this large metropolis...

Spoiler: Big16 Carry-Over From Recruitment Thread
    Show
I'm posting this based on reaction from other players in this thread who wanted to join but the game was full. Crestfallin' is a project of mine I've been working with for a couple of years now, but I feel ready to get some PbP action going with it. What is Crestfallin', you ask? Look below for the Big 16.

    1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?

D&D 3.5 with Pathfinder class features improvements. If both v3.5 and PF present the same class feature (such as hit dice, save bonues, or abilities, then take whichever of the two is better). Skills have been improved (for the better, I feel) while your Feats are still the same as under the 3.5 chassis, with an exception to the Two-Weapon Fighting tree, see below.

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?

"Homebrewed" campaign setting - Crestfallin'. Think Greyhawk but on a Planar Metropolis scale - it's a huge city, the kind of place where anyone can find anything or anybody, for the right amount of coin. It's a magical wonderland of adventure where dreams come true (think "Silvertown" from Joe Dirt) - and it's the focal point of the multiverse. Each class has more skill points now - for each class, increase it's listed skill points by two (so a Fighter or Wizard receives 4 + Int Mod, a Bard or Ranger receives 8 + Int Mod, and a Rogue receives 10 + Int Mod). These points are still multiplied by four at level one, and cross-class skill ranks still cost two points per rank desired. Max ranks in class & cross-class skills remain unchanged. Please make the following adjustments to your skills. If a class had proficiency in one of these skills, then they have proficiency in the new skill.

    • Balance, Jump, & Tumble are now one skill - Acrobatics.
    • Decipher Script, Forgery, & Speak Language are now one skill - Linguistics.
    • Listen, Search, & Spot are now one skill - Perception.
    • Hide & Move Silently are now one skill - Stealth.
    • Gather Information is now covered under Diplomacy.
    • Open Lock is now covered under Disable Device.
    • Use Rope is now covered under Climb, or as part of the Grapple rules - depending on the use.

If a skill is not listed here, then assume it works as in the 3.5 PHB.
Two-Weapon Fighting is notoriously bad and under performing in conventional RAW play. So I am setting out to fix that. Rather than use the listed descriptions in the PHB, instead use this link: http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=3140.0 from the minmax boards. Additionally, this link also contains [much needed] improvements to the Weapon Focus/Specialization feats - these fixes are applicable to this campaign too.

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?

Four or five players. Today is January 4th. I will keep this recruitment thread open until January 19th. That gives two weeks and a couple of hours or so to submit a character. This sounds like a reasonable timeframe. Oh, and I am on Pacific Standard Time. The only other timezones I am familiar with are Mountain, Central, and Eastern Standard Times. Therefore, please refer to times in one of these four formats.

    4. What's the gaming medium?

    Play-by-Post on these boards.

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?

Players can start at 0 experience points - you're all just starting your career as we speak. If you choose to start as a Race with a Level Adjustment of +1, then you have only what your Race's Racial Hit Dice would offer you to start.

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?

Take maximum WBL for your class (i.e. a Fighter gets 6d4x10 so he will have 240 gold to start with; a Monk has 5d4 gold, so he will have 20 gold to start with). Players can start with one clothing outfit from Chapter Seven: Equipment in the PHB free of charge that costs five gold or less.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?

The Leadership feat, while allowed, is not available in the conventional method. Instead it is now a class feature for Lawful Good (and only Lawful Good) Paladins at eighth level. This is the only way to obtain this ability in this campaign.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?

PHB I & II, the Dungeon Master's Guide, the "Complete" series splat books (Warrior, Arcane, Divine, Scoundrel, & Adventurer), Dungeonscape, and Tome of Battle are acceptable for Corre classes & Prestige Classes both, but check with Dungeon Master on a case-by-case basis. Monster Manual I is okay for races, but bear in mind there is no LA buyoff in this campaign. Monster Manual II, III, & IV may be acceptable on a case-by-case basis for Animal Companions or Special Mounts - as always, check with the Dungeon Master first. While I don't like a lot of 3.0 material because I feel it is very dated and not accurate, the Arms & Equipment Guide is one of the few books that is perfectly acceptable - namely because it does not have a 3.5 printing. I have a large amount of official printed material in PDF form, so if you have something you'd like to use from a printed source, ask me and give me page numbers and what book it is in so I can give it a good read. If it's not WotC printed material, then don't bother asking.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?

For stats, use one of the following methods; choose wisely though as once you've selected a method, you cannot choose the other.

Roll 3d4+6 six times. Please make your stat rolls in this character submission thread.

    Point-Buy, dependant on your starting Class;

    • Archivist, Artificer, Cleric, Druid, or Wizard - 25 points
    • Binder, Favored Soul, or Sorcerer - 28 points
    • Bard, Beguiler, Crusader, Dread Necromancer, Duskblade, Factotum, Swordsage, or Warblade - 30 points
    • Hexblade, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, Warmage - 32 points
    • Barbarian, Fighter, Knight, Monk, or Swashbuckler - 36 points

Alternatively, you may take the 'Elite Array' if you do not want to risk the potential of poor rolls. The 'Elite Array' is 15 14 13 12 10 8.

You may re-roll your entire stat pool only if your total ability modifiers before racial modifiers add up to less than +2, or your highest stat is a twelve. You may only re-roll your pool in this manner once (and once you do, it replaces your first pool of stats). If the re-rolled pool is unsatisfactory to you, you may take the 'Elite Array' in it's place.

For Hit Points, take the max at first level, then roll at additional levels. If you roll less than average hit points, just take the average. (i.e. if your Fighter rolls a 4 + Con on his hit point roll, just give yourself 5 + Con instead). All players receive the Toughness feat at first level in addition to any other class feature you would be entitled to. This one is free, enjoy it guys!

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?

Yes, alignment does matter. No evil. For example, if you decide to play a Paladin, be mindful of your Code of Conduct - the deity you serve won't hesitate to force you to Atone for your misdeeds!

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?

Sure, but if you multiclass, you will be required to take at least two levels in the class you're interested in. Experience point penalties for multi-classing do apply, as described in the PHB.

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?

Players and I both roll via the forum dice roller. Players roll in the in-character thread while I will roll there but also may make some rolls in secret that need to be hidden too.

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.

I love the "Generic Classes" and the alternate classes (such as Paladin of Freedom or Urban Ranger) from Unearthed Arcana, so if you want to use these, then go ahead - just check with me on certain features as Unearthed Arcana can be a very hit-or-miss book. The "Whirling Frenzy" alternate Barbarian class feature, for example, is not allowed (it's not near as balanced as the standard Rage).

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?

A paragraph or two should be more than sufficient. While I enjoy reading well-thought backgrounds, please don't write me a four-hundred page epic (it's quite likely I won't even read it if it's that long). In other words, moderation is key.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?

Mostly a mixture, if a bit heavier on the hack & slash. Hack & slash > Role-playing = Puzzle-solving. I like action, and don't be surprised to see a faster leveling rate in this campaign.

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?

Unearthed Arcana on a case-by-case basis. No Psionics, homebrew, templates, dragon magazine, flaws, or traits. No LA buyoff - if a race is powerful enough that you want to use it, you need to deal with the perceived higher level of the race.

    Spoiler: Backstory of the Nations
    Show
Crestfallin' - This is the 'star' of our story. A magical wonderland of adventure where anyone could find or learn about anything or any person - for the right coin, of course. This incredibly large metropolis is the trade centre of the multiverse, and has no specific demographic of race dominating over any other - you'll see just as many Half-Orcs as you would Elves, Humans, and Gnomes, for example. It's a rather peaceful town, reminiscent of Joe Dirt's Silvertown. It's odd, how in this one location, there is no racial strife or tension like there is in other parts of the world. It's almost like there's a spell of harmony cast on visitors of the town. This location is run by President Murphy.

Madrigan - Unfortunately for Madrigan, it has not had the fortune of Crestfallin's harmony over the years. Hundreds of years ago, during the "War of 112" Madrigan was involved in one of the bloodiest civil wars in the history of the multiverse. The scars of that war are seen even today; hence why we have both Madrigan, a Halfling nation, and it's [relatively] smaller portion, The Clovis Federation; a nation of Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and very small numbers of other non-Halfling races. Madrigan is still a large country though...but not near as big or prominent as Crestfallin' itself. This location is a monarchy run by King Wolvar Drakantal.

The Clovis Federation - Clovis, as just alluded to, is a much smaller nation. During the "War of 112", Clovis seceded from Madrigan, declaring itself as a new power of the world. It has managed to maintain it's independence for only a few hundred years. Clovis is run by a Republic of Elected Officials, much the same way as the United States Government.

Ostrich Bay Harbour - This is the primary trade partner of Crestfallin', they're known for their key export - Ostriches and Ostrich accessories. Ostrich meat, ostrich saddles, eggs, feathers, and even the big birds themselves. Ostrich Bay Harbour is not a military power in their own right, instead they rely on the much larger Crestfallin' for protection. Ostrich Bay Harbour is predominantly Human-run, but as is the case in most Human establishments, you're likely to find members of other races living here as well. Ostrich Bay is ran under the guidance of Crestfallin's own, President Murphy.

Zul'DrakRend - This is a very rough place. It's capitol is carved out of the side of a volcano, run by the cruel dictator Lord Maetheus Shadowhorn. His past times include torturing and enslaving persons for fun, sport, and profit. There is no real dedicated population demographic here as he does not care who he enslaves - only that he can have his enjoyment at the expense of others.

I choose to only highlight the primary nations as I play an open-ended style of game. I feel it makes for a more organically grown world.

Ugh... the city again. I wonder if they're all still bigots. At least I won't be enlisted here.

"Come on now, Hobblefoot. No use being on the road any more," Tenhelrim prods the mule one more time. As the beast lumbers ahead, the tired fellow takes a second to mumble an incantation, bored at the prospect of its necessity, and makes a mockery of the sign the clerics of St. Cuthbert use to bless themselves.

When asked by the gate the intent of his visit, he simply replies, "Shopping..."

Once inside, the vastness of the place makes him even more weary, as there's still a long walk ahead, but at least there is some hope of new discovery. As such, he picks up his steps and makes his way to the grand market. Passing by a local guild of necromantic mages he thinks to himself, Fools, banding together like that. How'd you ever get any work done with everyone bumping into each other? And how much they must waste in bribes to keep the authorities off their backs. Now, 'twer me, I think I'd set up shop in a nice place like...

His thoughts trail as he notices one shop selling a rather large selection of onyx gems. Now this is the place! If only my experiments had found some success... well, all the better, I can't afford any of this anyway, but maybe I can get something useful out of this shopkeeper...

Cast Undetectable Alignment. Tenhelrim's not evil, but that's nobody's business!
He'll look for more reclusive, solitary wizards or clerics, keep an eye out for shops selling onyx or more exotic spell components, and of course note the location of any graveyards or mortuaries, though I wouldn't necessarily expect these near the market.

If he comes across a district in the market that might contain other necromancers, or might be a gathering spot during... off hours, he casts Detect Undead to try to confirm it

"Ah... Yes, of course! It's an honor!"

Later, Rowan Arc would think that his instinctive - and surprised - answer perhaps had been a bit too hasty. But it is only when exiting the temple that the would-be knight starts to realize that somewhere is quite a large place, that he has no idea to whom he's supposed to bring back the ring, or even who could have took it.

Great. I'm off for a terrific start it seems.

The best course of action would be, of course, to come back in the temple to ask for more informations. But, ashamed by his own carelessness, the young swordman takes the decision to try his luck in the streets first. Fortunately, growing up in Crestfallin' means he is relatively familiar with the place and its people. Thinking, he decides that the market place was probably his best trail for now. After all, the thief would no doubt trie to sell the ring for coins, and with luck, some of the merchants would be able to put him in the right direction. He could only hope, at the very least.

Looking for a familiar face, Rowan begins his search...

Where to start? Syviraux pondered to herself.

With the bustling metropolis sprawling before her, she immediately turns her thoughts to the practical: food and accommodation. As she weaves her way through the busy habourside activity, she comes to the realisation that the residents of Crestfallin' are much more used to or accepting of unusual races than the people of Clovis - the mix of people she notes as she walks throught the Docks is testament to that.

After bypassing several establishments that appear a little too unsavoury for her tastes, Syviraux eventually locates a cosy inn a little further back from the dock front. Enquiring after room and board for night, the golden-scaled dragonborn can't help but wince slightly as she hears the price, but hands the coins over. At this rate, her meagre supply of funds will be gone in a matters of days. She contemplates as she makes the most of a last breakfast, and recalls seeing a familiar sign as she searched for lodgings - that denoting the Guild of Adventures.

Perfect! Perhaps there I will find a quest that will allow me to put into practice the talents I have trained for in the service of the Platinum Dragon. Or perhaps find some like-minded individuals who are in need of a compatriot. Her mind made up, Syviraux gathers her belongings and swiftly makes her way to the Guildhall, wings rippling slightly in anticipation.

You loudly curse the Gnome through the marketplace, though perhaps not loud enough for others to hear over the hustle and bustle that is a typical day in the life of the city. But amid your frustrations in finding him, you [perhaps carelessly] bump into another patron. He was a bit "hobbled together", and carrying a curved spear while prodding along a pack Mule, slowly moving through the market.

Your eyes light up to the sight of all sorts of spell components being sold; frog legs, diamond dust, various onyx gems - both polished and unpolished. Unfortunately your ability to gather information proves rather uneventful - you manage to pick up on tales of a mysterious underwater city, conspiracies about President Murphy and who really runs the City-State, and a tale of a legendary drunkard warrior, who once slew twelve skilled warriors with his bare hands after a night of drinking. Your intuition however, proves to be on the right track - after all, why wouldn't a Thief find his way to the marketplace to sell his newfound loot? As you enter the marketplace, you notice the aromas of many, many different races afoot, all doing their normal daily business. Not one over-abundance of a race over the others. It could be considered a bit crowded, however not crowded so much as to make it impossible to move, though perhaps enough to make you want to keep a hand on your belt pouch if you catch my drift.

Please proceed to the barracks where you can get ready with the others - there is a place where combatants can place their belongings in safe keeping down there, yes. You see primary job boards for contract work that is in need of experienced men and women to fill in consistently. Though the majority of the patrons from your view are male, and usually of the stronger variety - it would seem the "strongman" person is more keen on the idea of doing this kind of rough work. But, of course the pay is great, hazardous, but great, and this is something that anyone is capable of attempting to do. On your way towards the job board, the sight of a particular patron catches your eye as she enters the Hall. Another of the female persuasion, her face and hands covered, from what you can see, as some kind of mottled yellow/gold scales, dressed in a dark Cloak covering most of her body.

On your way to the job boards, the sight of a particular patron catches your eye. Another of the female persuasion, she was tall, slim, and shapely - the definition of beauty. One thing could be said about Crestfallin' : it wasn't lacking in interesting - some would say outlandish - stories, and if it had be any other day, Rowan would surely have taken the time to listen them all. As it was, he had more pressing concerns.

Walking carefully among the streets of the metropolis, Rowan focuses his attention on the various goods available for sale. While he was far from being an expert on the subject, he could guess that any fence would propose a wide array of items, without any unity of theme. With luck, this method could provide him with a lead.

After grabbing his backpack from its improvised hiding spot he heads to the locker room and finds an empty locker to place it in.

Once he is done with that he begins looking for this 'Bruce' person. Ya' know... it probably would have been a good Idea to ask what he looked like.he thinks after he realized he didn't ask for a description of Bruce.

    *sigh*

Might as well start looking.he resigns. After all the sooner I'm done with this the sooner I get a good fight. Then I just need to find a nice quiet spot and do a final inspection of my gear, and maybe pick up a few lead on some jobs.

Now wait a second. This could be a good chance here. The road hasn't been as safe lately, and I can only talk myself out of trouble so many times before I'm robbed blind or worse. But if I had a hulking brute to take a beating for me...

The traveler straightens and takes on a much more friendly demeanor. "Well, whatever was I thinking. I apologize for my clumsy mule. I demand that you let me treat you to a refreshing drink for the insult the animal has given you. And me! It's insulted both of us. I demand that you let me treat us both to refreshments!" As though he assumes his offer will be taken without a thought, he puts his arm around the stout fellow and begins to walk, leading him back into the market. As Syviraux peruses the job boards in the Guildhall, her zeal lessens somewhat.

"Experience," she mutters to herself in the tongue of dragons. The one thing she is lacking. Though her training has been as thorough as it can be at the talons of her mentor in bringing her talents to light, there is no substitute for the real thing.

Her mood brightens again when she considers the attractive human woman she passed earlier. Although as a Dragonborn in the service of the Platinum Lord she is now beyond such things, she can still appreciate beauty on an aesthetic level. And attired as a scholar, too!

Perhaps she is the servant of some nobleborn, looking to hire on behalf of her master or mistress? Or maybe an apprentice wizardess, looking to prove herself?
Syviraux peers at the human woman for several seconds, hoping that the presence of any magical auras might give her further hints.

    Spoiler: Actions:

Rolling Spellcraft for any magical aura(s) that might be on her:

Edit: Nervermind. I screwed up the post, so I rolled in the Test thread instead. At least I'll get presence and strength of auras, if any exist.

Also, observing to see what the woman is doing - is she looking at the job boards? Is she talking to anyone?

Syviraux smiles to herself as she detects the faint aura of magic spring up around the woman she is observing.
Well, I've at least confirmed that she is practiced in some form of Art.

She smiles warily as the woman approaches and greets her. Glancing up to look the woman in the eyes, Syviraux politely inclines her behorned head. "Greetings. This day finds me well, if somewhat slightly disappointed so far." She gestures a scaled, taloned hand towards the job notice boards; the other hand rests on her spear haft in the same manner as one would use a walking staff. "But the day is still young, and I've not given up hope yet. Yourself?"

"... So... uncivilized... as to, uh, proposition you in a market. And without a proper courtship. I never. I merely mean to make recompense for the clumsy animal here, and perhaps a new acquaintance in the process."

Continuing to nudge her back toward the street and the strange beverage vendor he recalled, the human continues charmingly, "I'm sure a dwarf such as yourself has nothing to fear, even in a place like this. The stout draconic-looking woman, for the voice and curves of body give proof of her feminity, seems somewhat taken aback at the blunt manner of speech of the young human woman. Her 'cloak' seems to flutter, almost in an agitated manner, though there is no wind or breeze in the guildhall to disturb any garment.
"Ah. Yes. Well, I too am newly arrived in Crestfallin' - this very morning via ship as well, in fact." She lets out a slightly vexed sigh. "I was kind of hoping that you might be a resident, or at least slightly more familiar with the city than I am. Still, mayhaps we might find our way together? I am called Syviraux, by the way." Syviraux respectfully dips her head in a short bow.

"As for employment," she glances over her shoulder at the notice boards again, "The collection of alms and healing of the sick are noble pursuits indeed. However I believe that my calling lies more in the direction of slaying of monsters and bringing criminals and their ilk to justice. Little of interest catches my eye today - perhaps tomorrow I will find some gold among the dross?" Syviraux smiles faintly, as if at some private joke. "The suggestion of a temple of Heironeous is a good one. Perhaps they will have something more appropriate." Syviraux scans the boards again, in case there is something she might have missed.

Carefully gliding along the streets, you find yourself moving from from merchant to merchant, casually checking out the mundane wares. You remember the description of the Ring you were given contained a Ruby in the centre of it. Among the merchants, you find some onyx gems for sale, both polished and unpolished in conjunction with all manner of various...what can only be described as components that likely have something to do with some sort of Arcane rituals. Frog legs, diamond dust, and a human eye are among the first few ingredients that catch your eye (no pun intended >_>) at the table.

It's not hard to overhear the discussion being conducted by a man with a curved spear and a pack mule and a dwarf in some heavy duty armour.

    Spoiler: Reaven

Unfortunately your Diplomacy skills (or lack thereof) do not find you with any more information as to how to locate this Bruce fellow - however when you enter the Barracks, of all the combatants one man stands out from the rest. He was a very stout individual, but not very tall, you could tell he was descended of Dwarvenkind. His polished, shining silvered armour with spiked shoulder pads stood out from the rest of the gladiators. He wore no helmet, his hair slicked back in a single long pony tail. At his side was this massive looking silver-tipped Greataxe. He was a proud man, swinging his Axe in a practice area - he was always concerned with being in tip top shape.

(Haha, damn your nat twenty on perception ) Among the idle chatter in the barracks you've overheard some stories, some legends and folk tales as they were. Tales of the mighty Red Dragon, Teovanth - some would call him the Destroyer of Life - hundreds of years ago, Teovanth terrorized this continent, demanding tribute be offered to his greatness for no reason other than "just because". For years the people of Crestfallin' were afraid of this fearsome beast, they offered him what he wanted - but every year he received tribute, he wanted more. Finally a brave band of warriors got together, they set out to slay the great Teovanth. Of these warriors, a Priest of Kord - Father Steiner, and his lifelong friend known only by the name "Double D" led the charge versus the dragon. It was...one of the bloodiest massacres of all time (on par with the battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War). It was said that Teovanth was defeated, but not after killing the final warrior with a last, dying stroke of his claw. But others would insist that Teovanth would escape his destruction, with only two of these brave warriors fleeing for their own lives. The actual end result is a subject debated by scholars, and common townsfolk of Crestfallin' to this day. It's a tragedy of this nation's history - but it is an iconic part of the history all the same (think the 9/11 incident).

"Wanted! Individuals with an interest in helping the advancements of medicine! Must be eager to learn and not ask questions about the healing potentials of my brews. For more information show up at Kumeggz, the Herbalist shop after nightfall in the Market District."

"Do you have spare body parts? I can pay! Yes, I pay you fifty gold for every part you don't need. No, just bring yourself to the well behind the Copious Coinpurse in the Market District at night."

"Help! Recent mining excavations in the Theodicris Mine have been put on hold after the recent discovery of a tribe of creatures living down there. A number of our miners are still trapped down there! We'll pay you seventy-five gold per person that enters the Mine, plus you can keep anything that you find. If interested, please contact Thorbal the Stout for more information. Recommended to enter the mine in groups of at least four. Prefer to be registered with the Adventurer's Guildhall but will consider non-members."

"Wanted! Additional warrior to go with us in search of the legendary Teovanth, Destroyer of Life! All loot from his lair will be split evenly, as much as you can carry! Want to be rich? Sign up now!"

Is... is that an human... Who the hell buy those things?!

Suddenly, Rowan was thankfull for skipping breakfast this morning. A small success in an otherwise rather fruitless endeavor. At this rate, the young man would surely return to the temple empty-handed, with nothing to show for his efforts.

He almost did not notice the couple of strangers a couple of steps away, who somehow managed to stick out even in the rather cosmopolitan atmosphere of Crestfallin'. One seemed to be a dwarven warrior of some sort, obviously outfitted for battle, when the other was a man who might have gone unnoticed if not for the mean curved spear in his hand and his peculiar clothings.

Maybe I could ask them... No wait, there's no reason a couple of perfect strangers would know anything about a local criminal. Then again, I don't have anything to lose, don't I? I'm really getting desperate, out there.

Straightening his back, Rowan walked toward the two men, an hesitant smile on his face.

"Aah, I'm sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if by chance you might be of some help. See, I'm looking for a ring..."

I haven't done anything to attract attention in Crestfallin' proper, and the Elders know I haven't got enough power to be worth following about. Are they truly just looking about for a needle in this forsaken haystack?

With his hands twitching a bit to hold his polearm ever so slightly more battle-ready, Tenhelrim turns to the man as he approaches.

"Oh, what's this? A ring... my my, both of you seem to have a funny idea of where to find a ring. All you're going to find in those bins are frog guts, overpriced gems, and miniature useless items. I passed a jeweler on my way in ..."

The man pauses and once again relaxes, leaning on the guisarme. Scratching his head he ponders a moment... "No, you're not looking for the sort of ring you buy in the market, are you? Oh, my, sorry. Did you not want me to mention that you were looking for a ring as well, lass? Dire wolverine's out of the bag now at any rate. What did you say your name was, sir?"

The axe-wielding man briefly stops to look at you, then scoffs at your smaller frame. But then he hears your inquiries about fighting for the Arena.

"Yes, I am the Arena Grandmaster, Bruce H. You said wanted to fight? Okay. Let me go over the rules with you." Bruce points to a hallway behind him. "There. You walk down that hallway and when you get to the end, the portcullis will be raised and you can enter the fighting area. The portcullis will then be lowered and you will be locked in; the only way to open the gate is for one combatant to surrender or die. We offer daily fights for the entertainment of Crestfallin' residents, and we offer both singles and pair fighting. If you are not in the fight, you may watch from the stands with the rest of the spectators. There is no "looting" of fallen fighters gear. When you sign on for a fight, we will inform you of what time it starts; then it's your responsibility to be ready on time - you don't want to no show a match. Oh, and there is an anti-magic field covering the arena during the fights - so don't try to trivialize the rounds with sorcery. Lastly, the fights are structured as followed; you can make twenty-five gold per victory (with a ten gold bonus if you fight to the death instead of surrender), then you can take the money and stop; or, you can risk it for double or nothing. If you win that fight, you would then get seventy gold; or you can risk it for double or nothing once again. This keeps going until killed, or you stop. At any point, you may face other arena combatants or monsters captured from the wilds.

Oh, one thing I should let you know; we're looking for more pair match-ups at the moment; so if you want to book a fight, find yourself a partner."

The competition is fierce; you can tell these guys aren't any old shmoe with a Broadsword and a shield. Axe wielders, Sword-and-board "safety first" style of fighters, and even ranged specialists are among the fighters in the barracks.

'So I need a partner before I can even sign up...' *sigh* 'Why can't things ever just be easy?' he ponders while looking for a quiet spot to think.

Upon finding a unused bench in an empty hallway he sits down and begins to think 'I mean sure,I could probably find someone here to fight with, but how would I convince somebody here to fight along side me, I might be able to use my charming personality... yeah couldn't even convince myself of that.' just then another thought pops into his head.

'And even if I could get someone to work with me who knows how we would do as a team?' after that depressing thought he decides to think on it some more before trying to find someone to enter with.

"I mean, It's not like a partner for me to register with will just appear out of thin air." he says to himself, and throwing his arms out to his sides.

As far as I'm aware, the immediate plan is head to the temple of Heironeous and see if they know of anyone who might be willing to assist us in helping the trapped minors - although on reflection it might be a good idea to ask around the Guildhall first, to see if anyone else is looking to team up. Once we've assembled a group, we head to the mine and look for Thorbal the Stout. Saskia: agreed?

"Well, now, Rowan, don't look so disappointed at your current position. I suppose you could say I'm not much more than an errand runner myself."

Tenhelrim pats the pack atop the mule. "You've just got to team up and get someone to help out with the areas that are a bit difficult.

"Say... does there happen to be a reward for finding this ring"

Upon hearing about the ring she almost jumps and grabs Rowan's shoulders.
"Yes! This is the ring! How do you know of it? Who sent you to look for it? Wh-" Seeming to realize she is borderline interrogating someone whos intentions seem to be to help her she relaxes and lets go of Rowan. "I'm sorry, i got a little carried away there. I am Cassie Morella, of the Kingdom of Margrave in the Schuler Mountains. That ring was given to me by my father with his dying breath. Its value is more tahn that of all the mines of Margrave, at least to me."

She will step back and bow to the 2 men. "Maybe its fate that brought the three of us together." She will smile. "Mayhap we could join togther to find the dastardly gnome who stole this ring from me. I'd gladly pay you for your time, if you'd help me."
