Choose your Own Adventure: Planescape Edition
So, what are we doing here? Similar to Xefas, I'm writing a "Choose your Own Adventure" story. This one is set in Planescape and will be rather high and potentially weird fantasy. With a philosophical touch, if I can manage it, but no promises.
I will maintain a character sheet, updated as choices are made. It will be based on simplified FATE, but don't worry about it too much.
In every post, I will provide one of two choices for the playground to make, which will change the story and flesh out the character. You may suggest different options and if you get enough votes, I may take them. If they fit the tone, more or less.
Also, at any time, you may ask "What do I know about..." and get some more information about a subject.
Sigil's sky is grey. It always is, after all, there is nothing there. It is also overcast with slate-grey smog and slightly lighter coloured mist that is threatening rain. Perhaps there is some kind of ironic justice in the fact that the most valuable piece of real estate in the known multiverse, the City of Doors, Crossroads of the Planes, is a piece of grey rock, where nothing grows and nothing lives other than cynics, rats and carrion-eaters. Some are all three.
I step into...
Choice 1:
>Goblin Bob's Hole-in-theWall

>The Cathedral of Justice
>The Faction Recruiter's Office
>The Golden Peach, Warm Meals, Room at Reasonable Rates
>Siegfried's Spells and Sundries
>The Three Ogres, Fine Blades & Armour
>Shagga's Discount Zombies

>"Good Day, Sir."

Might I suggest Google Forms to curate the votes? It would make the thread easier to read and the votes easier to count. Mockup: http://goo.gl/forms/ZUtZHKFHZ3
Of course, it would make write-in options harder to vote on and would mean the thread gets less bumping too.Last edited by Gavran; 2014-11-17 at 08:34 PM. Reason: rearranged post for vote visibility

Did you say Discount Zombies? That's fabulous!
I'm going to change my vote to Discount Zombies.
Spoiler: On the Google Forms thingI think this shouldn't be done via Google Forms because if we had that set up I couldn't change my vote to Discount Zombies and I think the advantages don't out way the disadvantages.

Re: Choose your Own Adventure: Planescape Edition
SpoilerCan't roll here, it seems. Did it off site. Cutter it is.
The Three Ogres is an unusually large shop not too far from where the Great Foundry belches out black smoke day and night. The street and building are reasonably clean, which in Sigil means that one can have a guess at what the original colour of the wall was underneath the grime. Grey, I think. Figures.
There's not three of them, so the name may not be entirely deserved, but that there is most certainly an ogre, standing behind an anvil. It's twice my height and the sight of eight foot long arms with a biceps the size of my torso swinging a smith's hammer has to be seen to be believed. For an ogre, he looks reasonably clean, though. Wearing pants, for one thing, and the blonde hair that grows on his head and down his back is carefully braided.
" 'Allo cutter!", he rumbles, with a voice like two avalanches colliding, putting the heavy hammer down against a wall that is covered in finely detailed blades.
I reply:
Choice 1:
>"'Allo. Ye sell blades, then? Need me one."
>"Mornin', Sven. How's yer brothers?"
>"Your time is up, Sven Bladesmith."
>"Quick, basher, they're after me! Need a place to hide!"
>"Good morning! Have you accepted our saviour Horus in your heart?"

Re: Choose your Own Adventure: Planescape Edition
SpoilerDoesn't imply anything, other than people will be annoyed. Preaching is allowed and quite popular. Temples are too. What's not allowed is:
a) Being a god
b) Being an avatar or proxy
c) Worshipping or preaching Aoskar specifically.
"Mornin', Sven. How's yer brothers?"
I've known the big ugly bastard for years now, him and his brothers. He's reliable in a tough spot, and of course a cutter needs a new sharp thing every now and then to introduce their enemies to. He doesn't do magic, but then, a fancy magic sword is often not as reliable out on the Wheel as a good piece of cold, blue iron and for that, you want a barbarian. For all their friendliness, these are the most barbaric barbarians I know.
"'s fine. Ole's at th' foundry out back 'n' Alef's in Asgard, visitin' our old Mum."
Walking over, I slap the ogre on his shoulder.
"So. About why I'm here..."
Choice 1:
>"I need a new chiv, something with a bit of a bite. I'm going hunting."
>"Got time for a little adventure? I got this map..."

Re: Choose your Own Adventure: Planescape Edition
Three's enough.
The heavy brow wrinkles more than usual as Sven thinks.
"I'm not sendin' you to me Mum's house", he says, finally.
"But shove over a black or two an' I can give ye another two portals."
Quickly, I shove three tarnished silver pieces over the counter and he takes them up in a monstrous fist, sniffing them.
"Aight. You want th' poet's gate, then, or th' gate o' fire? First's tricky. Second sends you to Muspelheim an' then's a bit o' a walk."
He ponders.
"Have ye got a crew?"
Choice 1: Which portal am I taking?
>The poet's gate
>The gate of fire
Choice 2: Who's with me?
>"I work alone. Always did."
>"I never take anyone along, Sven. You know, since Pluton."
>"Cubey's outside. You know, the Modron? Bit daft, sometimes, but calculates faster than a roomful of clerks."
>"Got me a fingertwiddler. You know, one of them spellslingers. Ashkalam the Magnificient or some stupid name like that."
>I sigh. "Yeaaaah. Remember when I impersonated that priest of Horus last month? Some angel decided I'm her pet project, now. Wants to redeem me. And no half decent blood wants to work with her following me. But she's useful, occasionally."
>"Got Brother Wong, as always. Need someone I can trust. And who can break some heads if necessary."Last edited by Eldan; 2014-11-19 at 07:07 AM.

Re: Choose your Own Adventure: Planescape Edition
They should have sent a poet.
***
"Define tricky...", I asked, suspiciously.
The ogre gave an amused snort.
"What's it sound like, poet's gate? There's one o' them snake women on the other side. Doesn't let you through if you don't know poetry."
I pondered this, for a second.

>I fancy myself a bit of a poet. Hopefully, enough, here. It's been useful in the past, to charm people.
>Shouldn't be a problem, for the seven-times winner of the pan-Olympian "Poet of the Planes" championship.
>Luckily, brother Wong writes a mean Haiku. We got this.
Just as I was thinking this, the door opened again and Brother Wong came in. He was maybe half my height, with plenty of lean muscle on his frame. His head was bald, shining with moisture and he had a tattoo of two serpentine dragons, red and gold, intertwined over his back, chest and arms. Two cutlasses were strapped to the rope belt which held up his silken pants.
"A bless'd forenoon ter ya, master ogre. I 'ave 'eard much about yar fine blades an' i' is an honour ter meet ye, yeah?"
He turned to me next.
"Alwigh' then, 're we leavin' na awer are there mawer preparations?"
Among his many fine talents was also a Sigilian accent so thick, it could serve as armour.
