This Day In History Thread: Because We Need One?

Hello, my dearest Playgrounders!

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling a little hungry today. Hungry for knowledge . And as it happens, I've always been a sucker for "This Day In History" Calendars, Websites, etc. And I thought we could all learn a thing or two (*gasp* learning!) if we pooled our knowledge of history to form a complete collection of cool dates in history. Simply come here, read a few posts on today, and maybe post an event yourself. Anything that happened today, in any point in the existence of the Universe. But of course, don't post unimportant personal absurdity (such as "today I snacked on some leftover sausages, one of which were dangerously brown). And really feel free to educate us, we need it . And obviously, if someone posts incorrect or inaccurate information, please correct them. Sources or a link to a complete article are also appreciated, so we can completely quench our thirst for knowledge.

Sorry if I'm being an idiot, I have NO idea if one of these already exists. (and also, slap me if I sound like a teacher)

Today on September 9th, 1956, Elvis Presley appeared nationally for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show. 60 million viewers, 82% of the nation's Television audience at the time, tuned in to watch.

September 10, 1915: Maurice and Jeanne Maréchal found Le Canard Enchaîné. Created in reaction to the heavy war propaganda of the French press of the time, it evolved into a humorous, edgy newspaper, mixing jokes and revelation of political scandals. This grandaddy of all satirical press remains an important feature of the French scene to this day. Its weekly 8-page format hasn't changed in ages, and doesn't include any sort of advertisement at all. It's also a fairly constant commercial success and probably the most financially solid publication in the country.

September 12, 1914: French armies rally to win the Battle of the Marne, marking the high point of German advance to the West during WWI. Exhausted German armies must end their fast progression towards Paris and retreat 90 km. Total casualties are about 500000 killed and wounded.

This is a turning point in the war, ending all hopes of a decisive victory on either side. After the Marne, both sides dig trenches and prepare for a long war. Had the battle been won by Germany, the whole history of the 20th century would have been completely different.
