The Superlaser was fully functional and operational, but the rest of the station was still under construction. It was basically a giant gun with some half-built structures hanging off the side.

Yeah, the important bits to the Emperor's plan were finished - the external shield generator and the superlaser. One of the opening scenes of the movie was Darth Vader chewing out some officer for construction not being on schedule, and announcing that the Emperor was coming to oversee the final stages.

So you think possession is more sensible than his being baited to engage by having Vader read his surface thoughts?

After several years spent with Leia, are we supposed to believe he thinks she's so weak that she'll immediately fold and take up Vader's offer? After he spent days having her tortured and made her watch her homeworld be blown to smithereens?

Even if he did decide that fighting Vader is necessary, why the Berserk Button?

I didn't understand this back when I had a cowlick, and it still makes not a lick of sense.

Luke's whole motivation is to protect his loved ones. That's why he left his training with Yoda to save Han and Leia from Vader in Cloud City. He also believes that it's his sole duty to redeem Vader from the dark side. So when Vader essentially says that if Luke doesn't join them, they'll just go straight through him and get to his loved ones anyway, he snaps. It's not about Leia's ability to resist the dark side, it's about Luke's inability to protect her from Vader and the Emperor.

You are talking about a trilogy that had all of two female characters not dancing strippers. And only one that wasnt basically a background character. Im guessing being surprised at the lack of respect for strong women is pretty surprising itself. Also, I dont interpret it that way. Its not "man strong, woman weak" its, "I am the last jedi, its my duty to protect everyone I care about. This guy just threatened my only other family member, he must DIE!"

The Emperor was unarmed and Vader was disarmed, literally. They were, in his mind, defeated. Luke knew he only had to distract them a little while longer until the rebel fleet destroyed the Death Star and took out all of them.

He was uniquely qualified to handle this problem, and didn't want risk anyone else's life trying to solve it.

It's also worth noting that it isn't a case of "other strong person in same situation as me can combat the same evil".

Yoda is dead at this point, meaning Leia has nobody to train her.
The rebellion that hid Leia before is about to get wiped out by the Death Star. She would have no support network like Luke did.
Leia herself is on the moon below them, and Luke knows that she's walking into a trap while having no knowledge of the Ewoks.

There's no reason for Luke to believe that Leia has a snowball's chance in hell of escaping Endor and then secreting herself away somewhere while she learns to become a Jedi with exactly no formal training. Hence his despair at revealing that she's family - she went from "very probably going to die" to "very probably getting a fate worse than death". And it's all Luke's fault.

Presumably Luke will pass a will save right before killing Padme, leading to the emperor using lightning on him. Possibly, Anakin will possess Palpatine after being forced out of Luke.

Or will the lightning be the emperor drawing Anakin out? The emperor could attempt to sacrifice himself, taking the ghost of Anakin with him. Padme could try to stop him but fail since she lacks hands.

I can't remember the scene well enough to judge whether that would work or not.

Added: Nevermind, Anikin's ghost will appar at the end. So maybe Anakin's ghost will make the emperor attempt to commit suicide? I'm looking for a reason for Vader to try to stop the emperor, but fail.

Skywalker men get really, really stupid when their family/loved ones are threatened. Love is their greatest strength, but it's also a lever for their enemies to pull. The Emperor did it to Anakin, Vader does it right back to Luke twenty years later.

Just cause the character has a different name doesn't make them a different character.

No, radically different behavior makes them a different character. At this point, Vader is more a defective clone of Padme--some of the memories and emotions, but too many other things.
