    This.

More pedantically: 3.5 generally handles "Mass" spells as a separate spell. There are other ways to accomplish multi-target spells like the ones V is using, but:
    • They are immensely more obscure and have significant qualifications on their use (war spells, eldritch tapestry)
    • Unless I'm forgetting an obscure but very powerful metamagic (or similar)*, they're not called "Mass X"

*So powerful, in fact, I cannot reasonably expect it would remain obscure - such a feat would be immensely powerful for a spells know caster like a Sorcerer.

For V to cast this on her own account would require her to know the feat Widen Spell - or Sudden Widen Spell - and be 17th level or have an item of that ilk. Do we have any indications of either?
I'm fairly certain this one is a house rule. Chain Lightning by RAW should have a single primary target and many jumps that all come from the same primary target to each secondary target. What's shown in the comic is lightning jumping from the first target to the second, from second to third, from third to fourth, etc.

The obvious conclusion regarding range, then, is that the range limit applies to each jump individually, so the spell can keep going as long as there are enough stepping stone targets along the way.

Well yes, but this is the Geekery thread. :) And eyeballing it, all the targets could well be within 90' of the first, so a Widened CL would work with no house rule necessary. Hmm... have we seen V cast CL since #106? Alternatives that would also fit would be electrical versions of Fire Storm and Incendiary Cloud. There are problems with both: Fire Storm is a divine spell and Incendiary Cloud has the smoke effect and an extended duration. A Widened CL is the simplest explanation.

As an aside, V casting Chain Lightning in #106 contradicts the levelling chart in the first post in this thread.

Could it be a Lightning Bolt spell buffed with some metamagic? Or is that too weak?

That's lightning bolt, and the OP is in error when it lists it as chain lightning. It looks like it has a wider spread than lightning bolt might, but it's also nothing like any version of chain lightning, which in the comic has always jumped from target to target rather than affecting an area the way lightning bolt and the spell shown in Strip 106 do. Just chalk it up to the art not being up to snuff and move on.

That doesn't account for the idea that, whether or not they're all close enough, the art doesn't match RAW.

Actually, Widen Spell only works on spells with burst/emanation/line/spread shapes; chain lightning doesn't even affect an area (unlike lightning bolt) and thus doesn't qualify.

So it's confirmed as a house-ruled Chain Lightning. Though if memory serves Chain Lightning in both 1e and 2e worked Rich's way, but losing 1 die per hop.

From latest: V's feats include improved counterspell. Zir spells also include at least one evocation of at least 7th level, but ze has multiple listed anyway, so...

Changed link for V's extend spell and chain lightning, Haley's level, and that table for levels of other party members. Added IUS to Tarquin, con 8+ to Roy, mass suggestion and imp counterspell to V.

IUS is the prereq to stunning fist (and classes that give stunfist for free, like the monk, also give IUS for free).

Yes, but he's not using Stunning Fist. You can't use IUS or Stunning Fist with a weapon anyway.

Surely the stunning power is coming from the axe, or Tarquin's use of the axe? Check out panel 5 of #861.

That said, the Pathfinder SRD does have the Stunning Critical (BAB +17) and Stunning Assault (BAB +16) feats which could easily be translated to 3.5E.

Even if he doesn't have Stunning Fist (not arguing one way or the other), he still likely has IUS as a prerequisite for Improved Grapple, since he broke Haley's arm while she was threatening. Pretty sure grabbing Durkon by the beard and throwing him is also a sign of Improved Grapple. Also, Malack stated that Tarquin taught him exotic holding techniques.

So either way I think that's sufficient case for IUS.
