You can also say the opposite. It may seem bad sometimes but I really doubt the writer is trying for the kind of pure torture porn some here make it out to be. I'm sure there will be some kind of actual payoff in the end since there are hints here and there of more overarching plots.

I actually agree. Things aren't supposed to be sunshine and puppies for the protagonists halfway through the story. Happy endings mean a lot more if they're earned and if characters suffer to get there.

I can definitely see the other side of the argument as well. There's only so much sadness the readers are willing to sit through. Still, it's perfectly clear what kind of story Goblins is by now. It's a dark story by design, and it doesn't try to hide that fact. If you choose to read it anyway, then I don't understand why you'd complain. It's a bit like picking up a Star Wars book and complaining that it happens in space.

I think some people who started out reading it when it was both funny and dark at the same time, before it started hiking along the border of Torturepornistan, might be irked that the comic doesn't feel like the comic they started reading.

It's not that they're complaining that Star Wars is set in space... it's that they're complaining that Star Wars has been taking place in the back streets and alleyways of a single dirty low-tech planet for the last movie and a half, and Leia has developed a smack habit.

In all seriousness, when was the last time it verged on torture porn? Bad things have happened but honestly, since before minmax returned with his "remember me?" line, there hasnt been any torture taking place. The closest I can think of would be the forgath/kore fight and even then it was a bit bloody but hardly grotesquely so.

That's taking the term too literally.

The comic has been about nothing but the characters suffering, and just suffering, and suffering some more, for what, a calendar year now?

No, it's also been about Max's relationship with Fumbles and other members of the GAP, too. Regarding your earlier comment, Kore already appeared the first year. That made it pretty obvious how dark and unfunny the comic could be. There has been plenty of intense stuff since then. I disagree that the readers could reasonably think that the last year and a half have been all that different than what's come before.

No skin off my nose if that's your opinion.

As far as I'm concerned, the comic took a turn from dark and sometimes funny and sometimes letting characters have little triumphs... to just ponderously, ploddingly dark.

    Bowstrings break; they are unreliable.
Didn't one of the folks from Minmax's original party have a bow this iteration? Or maybe it's the Archer!Kin from the Maze of Many.

I don't think it has to do with the "Toy" necklace, since her necklace is already misspelled. But will her necklace come back somehow or will she just see an alternate Kin's necklace and ask "Who's Ken?"

No, I'm with Anteros on this one. Young and Beautiful, the previous teller, saw something but misunderstood, quite possibly what happens to Dies Horribly.

In recent times we've had plenty of light moments with Minmax, Vorpal, Forgath, the Clicks, etc. We've also had good things happen to the characters. Forgath was healed and made new friends. Minmax made friends with Vorpal and is forging a bond with the goblins. Vorpal completed the teller ceremony, and Minmax saved his life.

It's honestly been pretty positive lately except for the axe breaking.

Something interesting from the last comic. We now have confirmation that prophecies can be incorrect.

Count me in the Goblins is not all suffering and pain camp. Bad stuff happens, maybe even a lot of it, but there are moments of joy too.

Also, the first thting I thought of with the She misunderstood, was the Goblin teller--seems legit, and could well be a bout dies horribly. I don't think it fits Kin, basically because the crux of it seems to be the misunderstanding, not the name not being right. her necklace being wrong doesn't seem to have anything to do with her misunderstanding. To put it another way, I think the misunderstanding is critical to the name not being right, rather than jut an additional factor.

If it had been the necklace, it would mean that prophecies bypass the work of oblivion. Which feels comforting, but seems unlikely to me.

Hmm. If Oblivion can change fate then Minmax's sword becomes Chekhov's gun.

I don't think we have any evidence to that effect though.

Well if Oblivion doesn't exist as far as the laws of magic and physics are concerned than it would actually make sense that it would be the only thing prophecies can't account for.

I think it would be a good twist, but it would be a lot more satisfying if he foreshadows it at some point before implementing it. Assuming it even goes that way.

That's not true. Oblivion sword was made when Sword's Defensive magic came in contact with Oblivion. The Sword's magic makes it so Oblivion doesn't erase it, even though it should. Physical elements are erased by Oblivion, but Swords' magic isn't. It's a weird thing.

I quote Thunt's today's blog post. The original post has actual links in it.

    Goblins Animated
    August 30, 2017 at 12:48 am
For the past year or so, we've been working in secret (well, semi-secret) on Goblins the animated series. It's still a ways off from being released, but so much work has been done and those involved with this are all really excited.

The series aims to turn the comic into a professional, high quality cartoon. Co-writing it with me, are Matt King and Phil LaMarr (their names link to their IMDB pages) who will also be doing voice work in the show, along with a list of other big names voicing the various characters. Aside from Matt and Phil, I don't think I'm allowed to officially name any of the actors, the animation studio, who's doing the music, etc. At this point, I'd rather err on the side of caution since this whole thing has like... lawyers involved with contracts and percentages and lots of grown-up stuff like that.

Very soon, a sort of rough draft trailer will be going public. The animation has an unfinished look to it, but it showcases the talents of everyone involved, really well.

There is more info to come out about dates, season one, funding, etc. Follow any of us on Twitter to be kept up to date as new info comes out.

    Matt's Twitter

    Phil's Twitter

    Tarol's Twitter

    The Goblins Card Game

The reason for my slow updating lately has been because of this and The Goblins Card Game (otherwise known as Goblins: Alternate Realities) which as of yesterday, I'm super excited to finally be finished. Like 'Goblins Animated', the card game is still a ways off from going public, but after years of single handedly drawing hundreds of cards, designing, playtesting, and designing some more, I have a finished, balanced card game prototype. I know that a lot of you have a ton of questions about the game and I'm working on a webpage that will showcase the cards, the artwork, the rules, a FAQ and offer contact info.

My life is a swirly, crazy mess these days, but my goals remain...

    1. Don't let down the people who are owed a copy of that game.

    2. Don't let down the people who have attached their names to Goblins: Animated.

    3. Don't let down the Goblins readers who have been so supportive for years.

I'm just glad that I can finally be open and public about goal number two! :)

I just wish he would stop trying to setup a regular post schedule. He cant ever keep it. I have no problem with his irregular updates, what I have a problem with is him constantly saying, "Ok, this time I got it. Weekly updates on mondays." Then falling through within a month. It doesnt help that he has all these other projects but seriously man, stop trying to force a schedule. It pisses off people more than just updating whenever.

As for todays comic, dangit, perspective shift. Hopefully it wont be too long. Since I get the feeling these two groups are going to join up at some point its probably just a few updates here and there to show that yeah, they are still moving towards the exit of the dungeon or wherever.

i think he can keep the monday schedule no problem, between the animation and the cards though he just had to focus more energy elsewhere. think once one or both of them are off the table again he'd be able to do it fine.

reguardless, looking forward to seeing what this animated thing will look like. wonder if it'd be a reccuring show, just a short serise, or maybe a movie or something.

Man, the Goblins have been in the negatives for like 6 months now. Even if we ignore how all these breaks are hurting the pacing, this really doesn't feel like an ideal time for a scene change.

I'm also not particularly crazy about him taking on additional obligations when it's never worked out in the past, and he can't even keep his current ones. I guess hope springs eternal...or something.

he's also completely finished with the card game for the most part. everything is drawn and statted out, all there really is to do with it is maybe a bit more playtesting and distribution. if anything the number of projects he has to do has gone down.
