Game recommendaion for toasters
Hello everyone!
I have recently re located away form my PC, and now only have my office ultrabook to play games on between my working hours. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestion for fun games i can play on a zenbook ux330ua, which has a i5-7200U 2.5 GHz Processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM and Intel HD Graphics 620 Integrated card.
any game recommendations would be fun. I enjoy lots of indie games (darkest dungeon, Heat Signature, Hotline miami) and would love to learn of moreLast edited by DemonicAngel; 2018-01-27 at 01:45 PM.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
You could give Thea: The Awakening a whirl. It should scratch an itch similar to Darkest Dungeon.
Crypt of the Necrodancer and FTL should also run fine on an iGPU. Renowned Explorers, too.Last edited by Silfir; 2018-01-27 at 12:08 PM.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
Thea Looks awesome, but it needs atleast 512 MB of video RAM, which i don't have...
already playing FTL and Necrodancer, but those are great!

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
You call that a toaster? Most days, the best I have is a Surface Pro 3 (i5-4300U, 4GB RAM, Intel HD 4400 graphics). Civ V actually runs great, though you'll want to play on Medium or smaller maps. HoI4 actually runs (slowly), as does Vic 2; CK2 and EU4 run well but the UI scaling is messed up. You will probably have this issue as well. As long as you stick to CPU-heavy games with turn order or pausing, where ~20 FPS isn't too bad, you should have no problems.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
Tales of Maj'Eyal is an amazing roguelike that should run on almost anything. Takes a little while to get really into it, but once it clicks you will have hours upon hours of entertainment. The variety of interesting classes is a particular highlight.
It's also completely free.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
Recent 2D indie games I've enjoyed are Owlboy and Salt and Sanctuary - you'll have to doublecheck their graphics requirements. They also both work best with controllers, don't know if you've got a one for PC.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
You're misunderstanding something: The HD 520 integrated graphics chip, like pretty much all iGPUs, doesn't have any dedicated VRAM - but they're designed to share your RAM with the regular CPU. I'd expect it to be able to use at least 2 GB as VRAM, which is enough to fulfill pretty much any system requirements out there.
You might get in trouble if your laptop had only as little as 4 GB RAM total, but you wisely didn't opt for a toaster quite as bad as that. You might be surprised at what it *can* run. At any rate, VRAM limitations are not going to be the problem. The general slowness of the HD 520 chip might be. Pay attention to games that ask for specifically named dedicated graphics cards as part of their minimum requirements - like "GTX 650 or better" or something. If a game lists stuff like "DirectX 10 compatible" or "Shader 2.0 capable" as minimum, chances are you can run it just fine.
I'm actually successfully running Thea on a notebook with the exact same specs. If you put details and resolutions to low settings it runs very well indeed.Last edited by Silfir; 2018-01-27 at 04:21 PM.

Your LITERAL GOAL in this game is to move a piece of bread to become toast.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
You can theoretically go full indie into eternity without ever needing to upgrade. I was pretty much doing that with my earlier i3 potato, no problem.
Also, if you're willing to play some stuff on low and around 25-30 fps, that opens up a lot of doors as well.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
Embrace the old school, Baldur's Gate's Enhanced Edition should run perfectly fine, as should Icewind Dale's. Go for a wander through some of the older games on GoG. I remember gaming when your toaster was the equivalent of the Enterprise's computer.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
I may have downplayed my PC capabilities with that toaster remark, but great suggestions all around!
playing around hand of fate and Child of Light (despite the horrible DRM). maybe i'll get Ori's definitive edition at some point.
Edit: Besides, I've been gaming this past few years on a computer with a Pentium. the fact I was able to mod and play Skyrim with any stability is still a type of miracle as far as i'm concerned.Last edited by DemonicAngel; 2018-02-03 at 07:11 PM.

Re: Game recommendaion for toasters
Dungeons of Dredmor (a humorous Roguelike) is pretty light on the system but has platform-independent stability issues.
Vertical Drop Heroes (a sidescroller/topscroller hybrid) is good too
Dwarf Fortress (a roguelike/RPG/basebuilder combo) is pretty platform independent in that it will start to lag a few hours into basebuildermode regardless of whether you;re playing it on a low-end laptop, a midrange desktop, or a Cray supercomputer
Master of Magic and Master of Orion 2 (4x strategy) are classics. Just stay away from Master of Orion 3 and Master of Orion 4"If you want to understand biology don't think about vibrant throbbing gels and oozes, think about information technology" -Richard Dawkins

There are some tricks to improving how DF runs, but yeah, it's hard on most computers.

Indie stuff? Hmm. I really like Klei Entertainment; Mark of the Ninja and Invisible, Inc are excellent. Don’t Starve is supposed to be pretty good too.
