Yeah but mass recklessness is ok as long as you have satisfaction to protect you.

For The Record, I hate the phrase Curiosity Killed the Cat. it sounds to me like a phrase used to make sure people toe the line without questioning the authority that tells them to do so.

I'm just amazed that people could interpret it to somehow mean that curiosity is a good thing.

    Are you responding to this:

If so, I think Kish was responding to Goblin Priest's question about what the moral to the full idiom (with Tamora Pierce's addition) was, not just to the original idiom.

I guess I shouldn't have said "good", I should have said "not bad". If something kills you then it's bad, I thought that would be clear.

I agree. I've only heard or seen it in popular media used as a threat. "Don't investigate too far, or we'll have to take steps." I've never seen/heard it used as helpful advice to use care in learning new things. "Look before you leap" is helpful advice. "Curiosity killed the cat" is a threat.

In this specific case, it was Tarquin's troops who slew the feline. Curiosity was just a bystander falsely accused in order to create a scapegoat.

I have enough experience with pets that I can believe one will expire out of terminal depression after an owner/servant succumbs to mortality. Heck, I've seen them wither just always staying with someone sick in bed.

Great comic (sorry I'm a little late) and very funny but does anyone else notice how the rope is positioned, and how short it is? First of all, he shouldn't really be able to swing like that starting at that angle and secondly, he cut that rope pretty close to the top so why can it suddenly reach the ship's deck? I mean the first one could have a plausible answer of like "He just is really good at swinging from ropes" which I mean yes but I doubt he has the core strength to generate that much swing in that short of a time but the second one I can think of no answer plausible or otherwise.

    Rule of Cool. Literally.
Elan is a Dashing Swordsman. Stunts like that are the whole thing of that class.
    If you need another explanation:
His class seems to give various boni for dramatic/cool/heroic actions.
Stuff like punning during a duel or smashing through a window into battle. That sorta thing.
Swinging into battle- on a (air)ship -to save your best friend seems like a situation where that applies.
So it's entirely possible he got to add his charisma bonus to whatever check he made.

Edit: Plus, this is Julio Scoundrél's ship.
The ship of a Dashing Swordsman.
Not unlikely she was build with maneuvers like this in mind.

Heck, for all we know the Mechane has an enchantment specifically meant to alter the length of ropes when someone is heroically swinging on them.

More seriously, the envelope has lost a lot of gas, so there should be lots of slack in the rope anyway. Swinging on it would just pull more out by distending the bag.

That's not really relevant if the ship is still on the air. The rope would remain at full tension because it's pulling the hull up.

I really like the idea of this being a universe where people spend extra money making ropes swingable because that actually gives you a distinct advantage against your enemies.

In fact, if you look at a full view picture of the Mechane, it is difficult to believe that Elan had a rope to swing on that would get him to Roy. Something is going on there.

Furthermore, expanding on what another poster already mentioned, it seems that any one rope should be safe to cut. Something like half the ropes could be safe to cut if spread around the ship and not in any one zone.

Its Schrödinger's rope: All ropes are simultaneously vital and non-vital until the moment a hero tries to ride one. That collapses the possibilities to which ever state best furthers the story.

I think I like Schrödinger's rope better than Chekov's gun.

I may be biased due to (ages ago) a thief character leaping from the second floor of a tavern to catch a rope (and making my roll to succeed with the attempted action) and swinging down into the back of a bad guy trying to kill our druid, knocking him into a crowd of belligerent drunks.

Certainly, but this is simple competent design, using redundancy to prevent a single failure from hurting you.

Similarly, a car has five tires, any four of which must be vital. If one of those four gets a flat, it is switched out with the non-vital tire, which becomes one of the four vital ones, and off you go.
