"There!" Darrik exclaims and stands back from Jason. "That looks pretty effective, if I say so myself. And it doesn't even look as silly as I first thought. I'd like to see one of those winged beasts try to eat you now! I mean wouldn't literally want that. Except kind of, because I'd like to know how my contraption works..."

Jason accepts the now modified coif. "Well, it's certainly...unique," Jason says after a few seconds of hesitation. He gingerly places it back on his head to try it out.

It's awkward and uncomfortable, lumpy and stretched, but you imagine it would be much worse for anything trying to grasp hold of you.

"Great," Jason says. "Make sure I'm buried with it if this goes south. Death by...whatever the Abyss those things are." Shaking his head, he adds, "Should we take a short rest first? I'm still a bit winded from the last encounter."

Tarina looks back in toward the darkness, wondering if attacking the creatures again is the best plan. "Okay...are we ready?" She pulls out her holy symbol and brings it to her lips, almost as if she is whispering something to it. She says aloud, however, "Mishakal, help us in this battle against the creatures of the dark. Help us so that we can find this lost man and bring him back into Your light." As she speaks, she looks at each of the others in her group and focuses her will toward each of them, and then herself.

OOC: I rolled randomly and you are very lucky - the drakmantles are last in a new initiative order. Just barely.

You literally cannot get surprise on them no matter what, but you all will act first. So at this point, once you finish discussing, just go ahead and describe/roll your actions. There are five darkmantles in the cave, about 20 feet away.

Darrik hangs back, with Devil at his side. Darrik was a bit uneasy about sending him to fight the monsters right now, with so many left.

Following Tarina's example, with short prayer to Habbakuk, Darrik looses an arrow into the darkness, aiming at the same creature the cleric attacked.

Pitching into the dark, Jason's javelin makes a distinct sound, chipping hard into solid rock instead of leathery flesh or dirt floor. Several dry thuds follow, and the wooden pole finally clatters to the ground. What had happened? You can't be certain, but a number of enraged creatures flap toward the warrior in a fit, aiming to stop his assault and sate their hunger in one go ...

Dunno what happened there. Sorry. Two attacks hit, and the third darkmantle does not grapple Jason, realizing that doing so will result in it perforating itself.

Darrik's not sure whether his invention worked or not, but at least he can't hear any muffled screams, so it might have. Darrik backs out of the darkness, since staying in it wouldn't help at all. Devil follows him.

When Darrik's out of the dark, he carefully takes aim. By the sounds Darrik can somewhat guess where they are, and he tries to aim high enough not to hit Jason instead. He hopes to hit the same creature he previously hit.

Devil stays in front of Darrik, ready to attack any flying monsters that come near.

Tarina watches Jason out of the corner of her eye as she reloads her crossbow. Her breath catches as the strange creature attempts to grab him once again. When she sees the creature miss, she almost lets out a cheer of joy. "Good job, Darrik! Looks like it's working."She takes aim and shoots at the one who attempted to grab her friend again.

A array of attacks blaze into the darkness, resulting in disturbing noises and heavy, wet plops. The darkness vanishes as quickly as it appeared, and in the wavering torchlight there are three dead or dying creatures on the floor, and two still hanging from the ceiling. They look pretty furious, but take flight ... and do their best to smash through your group and down the hall.

The entire party (sans Devil, who is too low); if the attacks hits, you take the damage. But as they are trying to get past you, you can each make an attack of opportunity. Jut make sure you say which one you are attacking. You can make an opposed Str or Dex check or be knocked prone, but it shouldn't matter - if they survive, the darkmantles are bugging out.

Tarina cries out in surprise and dives for the floor, but the darkmantles both run right over her on their way out. She stands and brushes some dirt off herself as she grabs her crossbow from where it fell to. She stares off down the hallway after the beasts. "Well that was rude." She looks around at the others. "How is everyone? Okay?" She moves around and helps the others to their feet, making sure none of them are too injured.

"Well, I'm not sure if we can really track them in any case. I couldn't keep my hunting spell up after that attack, and they probably don't leave tracks, except maybe some droppings... Anyway, should we check out their cave?"

Darrik prompts Devil to sniff the monsters' cave, to find out if there are any more creatures hiding, just in case.

Jason is struck again and knocked into the stone wall, his head left ringing and his chest sore. As the creatures reach the limit of his torchlight he gets just enough breath to heave his javelin, and it lances into one, dropping it from the air to roll, blooding, around the dirt floor, until it is merely twitching.

The remaining creature is long gone.

You are again alone but safe in the dark.

Tarina eyeballs Sorawyl quickly to make sure she had healed up well enough. Satisfied, she begins to move toward Jason once he has let his javelin fly. Following a quick examination she asks, "Do we want to take a quick rest? If we're in a hurry, I can heal Jason up a bit and then we can get going."

"Well, I could use a few minutes to take some notes..." it won't take me long to add these few caverns to my sketchy map, but it's better to do it now while I can see them.

"I could search those creatures' cave. Maybe there's something interesting there..." They didn't seem afraid of attacking people, so finding a corpse was very possible.
