"That would be helpful indeed, though I believe that we won't have time today to do so." With that he turns to the arguing men. "Enough, both of you. This debate will be settled as quickly as possible." The guards have to carry away the two men.

Diarmait nods in agreement, even though he secretly found the matter's resolution unsatisfying. The Earl had seemed more interested in what his knights thought of the problem than the problem itself; he asked what Diarmait and Osian would do in his place, and then sent the peasants away with nothing more than a vague promise to look into the matter later.
Diarmait could charitably assume that the Earl knew there was more pressing matters to get to...but deep down, he suspected that Roderick just didn't care enough. A sorry state the county was in, if this was the typical treatment he gave matters which came to his court. Hopefully, this was an anomaly.

Diarmait remained silent. It was fine for a knight to judge his lord in private, but never to question him—certainly not at court.
