No, but he does surface as a Great General from time to time.

Speaking of Vercingetorix, what's with Geriatrix talking about the Battle of Gergovia like it's this ancient epic victory that the Gauls pulled off when he was young. Or are we to believe he fought there (with no magic potion) when he was already in his mid to late 80s, or even early 90s.

The chronology doesn’t matter. Also I’m sure he fought in it as an octeganarian because it’s funny.

Yeah, I'd agree that the chronology is fuzzy at best since at some point Caesar agrees that the Gauls are gods, gives them control of the Roman Empire, and retires to live with Cleopatra in a little house in the country. (12 Tasks of Asterix)

Don't forget, all of it happens during the year 50 BC (despite us seiing the same seasons multiple times), when Caesar launched all of his campains at once and was Emperor of Rome and the Coliseum was already built.

The era is purely aesthetic, it's supposed to be ancient Gaul as seen by french schoolchildren, where every roman wore togas all the time and every note was taken on marble slates and Egyptians spoke with hyeroglyphs, etc.

Hey, question: what is the name of that Cambrai candy in Tour de Gaulle that got translated in Portuguese as "Mentiras" ("lies")?

Edit: Found it: Bêtise. Would translate more literally as "Besteira" (screwup), but the option for "lies" maintained other jokes better, so I can see where the translator is coming from.

Splendidly translated as "humbugs" in English, which means both a type of candy and a fraudster.

I'm assuming that's a non-American dialect, because I've never heard of either of those definitions. "humbug" translates to "oh you're clearly referencing Ebenezer Scrooge, since that weird is never encountered anywhere else."

Fun fact: Gosciny and Uderzo did a metric butt-load of time and effort researching each volume..And then immediately threw out that research in favor of whatever's funny as needed. Half the anachronisms they show actually existed at the time. The rest are made up for comedy. Uderzo is, reportedly, quite embarrassed when someone brings up their few unintentional anachronisms, rare as they are. Still, they did end up making him and his predecessor the best-selling authors in French history. Yes, really. More then Alexandre Dumas, or VICTOR FREAKING HUGO. Though, granted, Hugo never got a theme park. And they started a few fandom rivalries along their way, like their famous one with "The Blandest Fictional Character In The World", better known as "Tintin", or, as I think his comic SHOULD have been called, "The Adventures Of Captain Haddock and His Sober Ginger Companion."

The lady who did a lot of translation into English for Uderzo & Goscinny - Anthea Bell - recently passed away, and got a nice obituary in The Economist. One of her talents was to set up English jokes for the situations where a direct translation would not come off as a joke. (I'd lief as not be here either, old bean is one of the ones they mentioned and one I still recall from one of the first Asterix books we ever got)
