The singular denotes the concept. I'm not talking about a single object.

What?!? A sword can slice right through a pen. Did the Romans equip their legions with pens? Were portraits drawn of Napoleon holding a pen? Are tales told of the pen of Damocles?

Any pen given to Bond by Q will be probably far stronger than any sword he meets...

    Edit:

Also, if it's Macgyver with the pen, I bet on the pen 11 out of 10 times.

Mal got the agreement using a weapon, was the parallel. He also secures a deal later on with an actual sword, but I like the first joke better.

Easy to do. Each signatory pulls out sword, runs finger along blade to draw blood, signs in blood. (Using finger).
    No pen required.

We actually did that in a D&D campaign back in the late 70's. The signing in blood was a cultural thing with the dervishes we had been fighting ... so of course one of the guys brought an Exacto knife and we each sliced our hands (What? We Didn't Have MTV! We Made Our Own Fun!!And yes, beer was involved!) and then found out how sloppily we each wrote with a blood tipped index finger.

Ah, college days, it's amazing we survived them ...

Nope, none of us did that. This was the 1970's, before AIDS/HIV got a lot of people to be a bit more careful about such things. (I think a few of the guys wiped it on their shirt before it was their turn ... memory foggy)
As it worked out nothing was amiss by chance, certainly not by design.
What do you expect from a bunch of late teen males doing odd and insane stuff that is nuts - as a habit? Lunacy was the norm.

Hah. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Doing it in character (in-characters narrating it rather than players do it IRL) is the better idea, of course, but we were nuts so we acted it out. Guys doing guy stuff.
People now bungie jump, and base jump, and other fun stuff.
Beyond that, it is an objectively bad idea to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, but people still do that too.
    Whatever amuses you.

Yeah. They could turn strange with some rapidity. The most bizarre one involved a few of the guys going out back of the house and smoking some Thai stick ... getting a little odd in the head, and by the time the session was over some of the characters were trying to have an orgy with recently slain undead zombie monsters. Yeah, it was gross to the max.

I don't let things go there anymore. At the time our filters / boundaries were still being formed (to say the least).

Personally, I think the real question is “what would they say to each other, should they meet?”. I’m picturing them just hanging out in a bar, swapping war stories. Not, like, romantically or anything: just two old soldiers, sharing scars.
