Default [EMPIRE!6] - The Sewune Market - Round 11 event

What started out as hunters and foragers gathering to trade pelts and berries has now grown into a yearly event that attracts visitors from all over the kingdom. For the first time in history the event is now hosted in Manticore Rise and while originally this city was built far out into the wastelands the Sewune people have been hard at work reclaiming this land. Greenery now stretches as far as the eye can see in all directions. A small forest has been erected with seeds from the Gehudu forest planted and nurtured by the locals with government support.

In the early mornings before the sun rises stalls are being erected on the streets and all over the Oyem square, a large podium from which King Yorick will open up the market and will spend most of his time speaking to people that require his attention is being constructed in the centre. Many citizens have made the trip and even while setup is in progress bartering and the sounds of ale mugs clacking together can be heard. As the sun creeps over the horizon the many colours of tents and market stalls give the city a festive look uncommon to what once was a desolate place. Merchants have set up activities to lure in as many clients as they can, a trail in the forest has been laid out where people can ride Elk and game birds have been released for aspiring hunters and civilians alike to hunt. Shamans can be seen reading fortunes for people using healing herbs and many food stalls have live food preparations of many imported goods like seafood and Cacao Banana.

When the preparations are complete the square is packed and the king and his advisors ascend the platform. As he reaches the top he waits for his advisors to sit down on chairs provided and speaks out to the populace. "Blessed be you all on this day, a day of tradition but more so a day where we give note to how far we have come. It is by the guidance of our ancestors that we have managed to grow this market to its current size I would ask you all to join me in a moment of silence while we give thanks." The king places his right hand over his heart and with closed eyes tilts his head towards the sky, many in the crows join him. After a small moment of time the king continues "Now go forth on this blessed day and may your trade be bountiful.".

When the king finishes his speech trade starts in earnest and the shouts of many merchants fill the city streets.

The Vygra arrive in a small caravan. Four massive barrel-topped wagons drawn by a pair of aurochs each, brightly colored and leaving deep ruts in the forest floor from the weight of their loads. Half a dozen humans riding elk accompany them as escort, Harud elkhwaden from the tundra south of the Vygra capital. As they arrive at the square in Manticore Rise, the score of ra busy themselves in various tasks. Some unlimber the animals to care for them and set them to grazing, while others begin opening the sides of the wagons and unloading goods for display. It does not take long for a selection of produce, bronze-worked tools and jewelry, furs and stoneware to become available for buyers.

Three figures approach and mount the raised platform where the Sewune king and his advisers sit: a middle-aged Bora and a younger Efra, along with a human woman in her prime wearing the furs of the elkhwaden. The Bora walks at the fore, and bows in greetings as they prevent themselves. "It is a pleasure to meet you, King Yorick. My name is Varsha. I serve as a fulji to Matji Khetra, and extend her greetings and warm wishes to you."

Varsha gestures to each of her fellows in turn as she introduces them. "This is Phaudl, sister to Chief Kuhhim of Elkhrime." The human carries herself with an assertive confidence that draws the gaze. Her skin is a light tan, and her build is clearly no stranger to hard work. Dark brown hair is shaved close and patterned on one side, while it hangs long past her shoulder on the other. Sturdy leather tunic and trousers are decorated with colorful pressed flowers and toggles made from antlers. The woman lifts one hand palm upward in greeting and nods, smiling to the king and his advisors - particularly any who are younger and handsome, on whom her gaze lingers a little longer.

"And this is Angna the Furnace, granddaughter of Fulji Aruni." The Efra stands twenty-three hands high, and her sleeveless wrap tunic and skirt exhibit an athletic form. Her skin is like charcoal, veins glowing brightly from within, with dark red hair pulled back in braided rows. A short spear of black iron and a bronze-bladed asca are strapped to her back and side, with a hide shield carried over her shoulder. Angna gives a short bow in the Vygra style. "Greetings, King Yorick. We thank you for the opportunity to join your people in trade today."

Wenid Kw'Muketi might be the King of Kings of the Korebita, but on this particular diplomatic excursion their natural authority took a backseat to the history of the Crimson Curator, Oyem Kw'Mesihafi, after whom the central square of Manticore Rise had been named. The blemmyae hero arrived in style, riding on chariots plated with gleaming, artistically worked copper and pulled by a pair of large and belligerent rams, their shaggy fur dyed as bright red as the feathers that made up Oyem's magnificent cloak. On the back of the cloak was painted in minuscule strokes the symbol of the Mesihafi clan, a black swallow mid-flight, its wings stretched to the sky. At Oyem's hip hung the legendary broadsword of Yedem Kali, its blade shimmering in an unearthly light as if it was wet with fresh blood. To those that stared at the blade for too long, an eerie, unintelligible whispering could be heard at the edge of their consciousness.

Oyem brought their chariot to a halt in the center of the square that bore their name and tossed the reins to one of the many Sewune children who clustered to gawk at the impressive new arrival. Oyem was well known in this land, having spearheaded the conversion of Gehudu Forest to Abiherism when they were barely more than a child. Take good care of my goats, and there'll be more where this came from, they said to the lad to whom they had entrusted their chariot, tossing them a small but perfectly formed garnet crystal as red as the rest of their equipment before striding over to the podium where King Yorick stood.

Ah, Yorick, good to see you again! Oyem said boomingly, climbing agilely onto the podium and embracing the Sewune leader. After a few seconds, they broke off the bear hug and beamed out at the market. I see my square has been put to good use. Which stalls would you recommend for the business of a LEGEND? I intend to purchase gifts for my librarians back at home and I'd appreciate the expertise of a local in helping make sure I don't get robbed blind! They looked around expectantly at the Sewune near the podium, as if to see how many would volunteer to accompany the legendary Oyem Kw'Mesihafi.

When the strange reptiles first approach the marketplace in their procession, the ra and human merchants of the Confluence are among the many heads turned at this unprecedented sight. A few hands taller than most humans, with their green hide and conspicuous teeth and claws, these new creatures are clearly some people previously unknown by the Kiswans. Rumors have recently spread of a new land beyond the west, 'Sikar'; as that word is heard among the otherwise unintelligible language spoken between these folk, word rapidly spreads that must be where they are from. While the surprised merchants' early attempts to speak with those that approach seem fruitless, goods and trinkets are offered as interest is shown, and with gestures (and much curious staring), a few exchanges are made.

It does not take long for one of the younger Ahra to be sent running to find the fulji. Varsha and Angna arrive, and after a quick conference, seek the apparent leader of these new traders - the one adorned with silver and feathers who presented themself before King Yorick. Angna stands by, observing carefully, while the Bora approaches with a deliberate calmness. Hands spread to the side, she bends her knees and dips her head in a bow as a greeting. While already told the strangers do not speak the trade language, Varsha provides a formal introduction regardless. "Greetings. I am Fulji Varsha, of the Vygra Confluence." She pauses, and when there is no sign of comprehension of her words, abridges them in the hope to make at least a basic overture possible. "Varsha," she states, fingertips of one hand on her chest. She then gestures to the other ra nearby. "Vygra."

Sending a delegation to the market was an easy choice for the Nocturnal Hydra. The Night Elves had been talking with the humans from the distant shores of Kiswa for a while now, but this market would be a place to speak openly. As well as to take a sampling of many of the other goods Kiswa had to offer. Those berries were pretty divine, after all. There was a caravan of three dozen night elves along for the ride, glitter out in the finest treasures and decorum, with their own sikaran samplings to offer up.

Melose had recently had her eighteenth (decade) birthday, and was the one to formally come discuss with Yorick. One of the reasons she offered was that she wanted to spread her art and see a bunch of new sights, at least once, before she got too old and frail to make these wide travels. Night elves lived a long, long time, but they did not live forever, and even for them she was getting up in years. Her granddaughter and grandson came along to help her make good relations, and protect her from whatever dangers might await. Jayerei was excited to show off her horse skills, but Javerei was on guard.

Both of them also doubled to show off premier horse riding skills, as well as horses in general, which they’d heard were a unique entity in Kiswa. They’d seen other kinds of ‘horses’ though, with horns too, though on close inspection these creatures were *very* different. They’d had to hunt a few animals to eat on their way over here, and already they were finding the rivers making horse hunting tactics… difficult. Horses were essential to the Night Elves because they provided stamina that night elves, unlike humans, did not have, and were fast as all hell.

There were so many people offering their wares and trading goods, but they were here to sell, not to buy. Besides, it was hard to communicate, and the weird coins they brought were an utterly foreign concept to the Kiswa natives. Which honestly was good, they could sell the coins for far more than they were worth here because of the sheer novelty of them.

Communication with king Yorick was easier though, as the one Truthseer they brought along was following Melose to make sure she could understand the high up officials with great clarity. She would perhaps have her turn at the podium, but she didn’t have a speech prepared (unlike Wyelde and Zora, she was never much of a *public* speaker), and her grandkids were bickering to each other over what to include in such a presentation.

While Oyem makes himself known, just in case anyone missed his entrance the king stands.

"Oyem my dear friend it is wonderful to see you again!" he says as Oyem climbs the podium and then he returns the hug.

When Oyem finishes his sentence the king replies.

"We attempt to make it as grand as your stories and I think none in the square today do not know of your heroic deeds. We have many stalls for you to peruse with wares from all over Kiswa and beyond. Some of our people have found new lands to the west past the blight and the people there speak a tongue foreign to our own. We left invitations and got a few scripts back in return perhaps your librarians can make something from this and assist ours." he pauses for a moment.

"While you walk these streets I wish to make sure you do not travel alone and with your new quest looming none other than Dra Ranu herself will accompany you." As he says this Dra walks onto the stage.

She is a slender woman with long ginger hair, dressed in hunting gear with primarily green colours and two bronze swords tucked behind her on her lower back.

It did not take long for the king to notice the night elves. He had heard about them from the early explorers that went west and encountered their colonists; it was the night elves that had given them the scraps of paper bearing their words and it was the night elves that had received the original invitation to join these festivities. He was glad that the intent was not lost in translation.

"Greeting travellers from the west, I understand you speak our tongue and what my fellow countrymen tell me you have interesting things to show and share with us." he pauses for a moment as he gestures for the line to make way and for the elves to come onto the podium. When they stand ontop of the podium he continues.

"We wish for our people to have a prosperous relation and with that purpose in mind it is my hope we can start that today with some successful transactions. I have heard the stories of your strange pieces of metal spreading and it seems my people have taken a liking to them. Please do tell me what are these?" He says as he holds up a gold coin he retrieved from his pocket. Clearly some of the people that purchased one went straight to the king in the hopes of currying favour.

    Yorick and Dra Ranu

Greetings to you, illustrious Dra Ranu. Well, if you're going to accompany me to the blighted lands, I suppose we should get to know one another. Which of these stalls serves the best food? I'm starved in any case.

    Melose

Oyem approached the delegate from the Nocturnal Hydra with obvious interest. Though superficially similar to the Sirrvadut elves that they had met before, these foreigners were wholly different in demeanor and attire. But Oyem Kw'Mesihafi was never one to bow away from a challenge, and so they came directly to face the strangers. Speaking in the Kiswan trade language, and careful to avoid any particularly long or challenging words, they addressed Melose.

Hello, ones who come from far away. My name is Oyem Kw'Mesihafi. I am of the blemmyae of the Korebita. Who are you?

    The Soreni

Oyem also approached the Soreni, with a bit more caution. While the envoys of the Nocturnal Hydra were recognizably elves, the Soreni were like nothing they had ever seen before. Addressing the creature bedecked in silver as the likely leader, Oyem tried fruitlessly for a few minutes to speak with them, first in the Kiswan trade tongue, then in the pure Blemmaic language. With no sign of comprehension from either attempt, Oyem gave up on language and resorted to crude sign language.

Hello, said Oyem, waving frantically at the Soreni queen. Me they gestured towards themselves with their thumbs Oyem. They flexed one meaty bicep. Me strong! Then they pointed at the Soreni leader. Who you? At the end, they shrugged their shoulders in mock confusion to indicate that they were asking a question.

Merchants and traders from across the lands of Henanda - not to mention from further afield - had come to hawk their wares, ranging from somewhat prosaic lumber salesmen to jewellers with pearl and mother-of-pearl accessories, and apothecaries selling a variety of medicinal herbs, including some which claimed to heighten mental acuity, improve mood, and generally act as panacea.

They blended happily with the Sewune and other traders, calling out their wares into the marketplace.

Rather more quietly, a woman moved among the stalls, wearing a hooded cloak. Not that the Bannanda were a particularly modest people in their attire, or that they needed any particular protection against the sun's burning rays, but Sewune was rather colder than they were accustomed to, and she was clearly wrapped up against any hint of a chill - but the hood seemed to go beyond that in order to conceal more of her face.

Some of their eyes turned at the sight of the Soreni. Trolls were well enough known, but these were something else. Were they livestock, trained beasts, or some new people? Tales of outlandish creatures in the west had been told, but few had taken them all that seriously yet.

One of the Bannanda merchants approached a Soreni who seemed to be carrying more metal than it strictly needed. "Chālcish?" he asked, pointing to the jewellery.

Not far behind the Hydra caravan and coming from the same direction there was a third Sikarian caravan. The procession was led by a massive golden lion, nearly twice the height of the horses following it, and on it's head sat a large crow bedighted in gold and silver jewelry. A howdah rested upon the lion's back carrying Maat the Archer, youngest son of Shebitku, and his personal guard. Amiras Salma and Ayla, daughters of the wise Sultan Zidan il Kasima followed on their own horses because this is of the Ashir. They had no guards or attendants. Hundreds of crows followed both in the sky and resting on horses ridden by slaves.

With them they brought samples of all the goods of Sikar; gold, silver, rare nahkla and runestone, dried grains, even fermented pulque, and fish sauce. They also brought maps and scrolls with details and drawings of some of the wonders of Sikar, such as the great cities of Highnest and An Ahkad.

As they reached the edges of the market the crows landed in trees and went silent. Then Kro Thorael flew down from atop the golden lion's head. Four crows followed him and draped a robe around him as he grew and took the form of a man. His skin and eyes remained as black as his feathers and his feet were still the taloned feet of a bird, but his face was that of a handsome man, perhaps in his forties. He looked to the nearest local and in a rich baritone said in a broken Kiswan tongue, "I am the flying between, the feathers of the sun, judge taloned of Sikar, Kro Thorael. Take me to your master."

Melose nods to him, and gives a gentle bow. Her two grandchildren give a deeper bow, though by that point Melose is already walking to the podium. This was less formal than she thought, but that suited an old crow like her. Funny story about crows…

“These are Jue.” The words were spoken, translated by the Truthseers next to her so they could speak between each other. Translators helped, and in the case of the word Jue it translated in a literal sense to something between the word “tooth”, and the word “shell”, which was a difficult concept to translate concisely. She was holding out several coins from her pocket, of varying sizes and metals. “Silver, gold, copper. Made out of rare materials, marked by our kingdom. You do not need to weigh them, they all weigh the same. It makes trading easier, because you can say ‘I will trade thirty gold Jue for those horses.’” She stopped, gesturing behind her to show off what a horse was. “Instead of saying ‘I will trade some pile of treasure for those horses.”

She showed off each of those coins in turn, stopping at the only one of the bunch with a slightly different symbol. Most of them bore a symbol of a worm wrapped around the outer edge, with the inner portion taken up by a crow holding an orb. Yet a single one of her coins shows just the talons of the crow, and just the orb. “This one is different because it comes from a different kingdom, who I believe is also at this delegation. Regardless, the crow symbolizes wealth just as the horse symbolizes endurance and the worm symbolizes might.”

“But we have more to show off than just coins.” She raised her hand, and her grandchildren raised up the bows they carried, without arrows drawn of course. “We heard that you also have some bows here, but they look significantly different from ours. It would be very interesting for us to see how your archers fire with our bows, and how our archers fire with yours."

Speaking of those festivities and sharing of traits and talents, the elves were sharing a drink with the locals. They could brew a mighty fine wine out of their drink, and the Alskans brought over their own beverage, and at least a couple of them were experiencing the different foreign highs. The faint noises of that revelry in the distant background were nice while Melose spoke atop the podium.

    Sewune

The Soreni Queen speaks to the king with help from a translator:
Greetings, King [Yorick]. We are [the Soreni]. We are a strong nation [from the] southwest of Sikar and an ally of the [Sentinels of Stone]. We do not seek war, but trade. We have a lot to offer, [what do you have to offer]?

    Blemmyaye

The Soreni can comprehend that well enough. The Soreni queen conveys that her name is Gothek Sekthel, that she is indeed the queen of the Soreni, and that she too is strong. Perhaps she is not as strong as Oyem, but physical strength is only one part of true strength. Then she just stands there for a moment. Then she asks for a translator. It will be much easier to communicate through a translator.

Greetings to you, illustrious Dra Ranu. Well, if you're going to accompany me to the blighted lands, I suppose we should get to know one another. Which of these stalls serves the best food? I'm starved in any case.
She looks quite excited about the prospect of eating at the market stalls and says

"There are many food stalls I can highly recommend the seafood and after that the choco Banana!" she then turns slightly red about how excited she got.

    She recomposes herself and asks.
"While we walk could you please tell me about one of your most recent adventures and perhaps abit about your sword?"

"These Jue are accepted in Kingdoms other than your own? Being able to cut down on travel time and bulk by converting treasure and produce into these before and after travel sounds useful."

He holds the gold coin to the light and gives it to one of his advisors and tells him "Lets see if we can design one of our own while we discuss about acquiring the specifications with our new friends."

Turning back to Melose "Thank you for you assistance on this matter." He looks at the bows "A display of archery sounds lovely, we have released some pheasants in the surrounding forests that would make excellent targets." He gets one of the attendants to retrieve some hunters. "These fine men and women will be happy to assist."

Kro Thorael raised an eyebrow at the mention of 'lizard people'. Likely that meant the Soreni had beaten them here. Playing catch up with the Soreni was not ideal. They were not know for diplomacy. He waved the peasant away. "It won't be necessary." He waved the crows forward, and the merchant flock spread out across the market to investigate the wares and display their own.

Meanwhile Thorael made his way to the central square followed by his honored guests and personal retinue of crows. It was not long before he could see night elves and soreni. Clearly this was the right place. He made his way past the crowd to address the king.

"I am the flying between, the feathers of the sun, judge taloned of Sikar, Kro Thorael. We are from the Ashir Sultanate of Sikar. We bring gifts and news from our homeland."

Maat was bored, aside from training in archery there really wasn't, much for him to do around the palace. With 5 siblings ahead of him in line for succession, few were particularly interested in his whereabouts. It took little effort to get permission to go to the other side of the world, and less still to bring his custom recurve bow. Unfortunately with his cousins around there was little if anything to shoot, all the birds were crows, and his cousins were dreadfully vanilla. The gall of a commoner addressing royalty was by far the most exciting thing he'd seen all trip. At that moment Maat decided to lose an arrow in the man's general direction, a warning shot at best, or a light crippling if Maat mis judged the winds.

At the sound of the arrow loosing Kro moved at superhuman speeds to turn and snatch it from the wind. With the arrow in hand he narrowed his gaze on Maat. He didn't even spare a glance for the peasant. He honestly didn't care about the man, but they were here to make a certain impression and these childish games were not going to help.

<<"Maat, get down here, child,>> He continued in crow as the child scrambled down from the howdah to join him, <<"I understand that you are the fifth son, with little chance of inheriting the throne, but you are still royalty. Divine blood runs through your veins. We must carry ourselves with a certainty. We are enactors of the divine will of the blessed sun. Our every breath must reinforce that image. God does not kill needlessly, and neither should you, though it is your right. Do you understand?">> He did not ask Maat to apologize, as the man was beneath their notice. <<"Today you will learn diplomacy. Stay at my side.">>

A howling wind blows through the market as the shadowed figures glide into the marketplace. The three representatives of the Sol'Ikoth stick to the shadows at first while they scope out the market. They have been tasked with finding items that may be linked to ancient ones as well as spread the influence of their god. Leading the group is a tall figure shrouded in a thick, tattered, grey cloak. Its hands are hidden within the long tattered sleeves and a long curved beak-shaped mask made of bone is as close to a face as it has. On the top of its head is a set of antler-like horns. It is called the Xthzgk'ahk. After the Xthzgk'ahk, is a tall "person" donning a plain black cloak that is drawn around them tightly. The upper half of their body sways when they walk and under the cowl of the cloak, a hideous wrinkled face can be seen. Lastly, there is a tall man in a black cloak with ornate gold trim. His hair is black and his skin is tanned from a life under the sun. he has a short black beard and a scroll at his belt. He is a scholar from the Sol and will act as a translator. They spread out and see what they can find.

    Queen Gothek

As the translator arrives, Oyem relaxes a bit. So these strange lizardlike beings were intelligent after all. Gesturing to the Truthseer, Oyem says clearly, What strange manner of creature are you? You resemble the Dhraan trolls in some ways, but you are smaller and punier-looking. And you have those strange feathers too. What is the name of your people?

    Dra Ranu

Stopping at the seafood stand, Oyem grins at the merchant running the stall. Give me four of those steamed herrings, fishmonger, and a couple for my friend too. Plonking a garnet into the stunned shopkeeper's hand, Oyem sticks one of the fish into their mouth and pulls the entire thing out, the bones picked clean of flesh. Not half bad, actually, they said, devouring another fish. About my sword, then. It was forged specially for me by the warrior monks of Zemena Lake, out of one of the Blood Ingots taken from the heart of the Slithering Wombs by the hero Dinfat Kw'Torineti. Dinfat's own spirit inhabits this blade, and it swings as if it was part of your own body.

    Maat and Kro

In a sudden flash of red, Oyem Kw'Mesihafi is sprinting across the square, their feathered cloak blowing out behind them in the breeze. The fury in their eyes is evident as they make a beeline towards Maat, screaming a torrent of abuse as they approach. By what right do you shoot at that man? Oyem roared, spittle flying from their mouth. They did nothing to harm you! You think you are superior to them, just because you are the spoiled, pampered son of some puffed-up noble? Why should the blood flowing in your veins give you the power of life and death over them? I do not know of your Sikar customs, but in Kiswa we judge a man by their deeds, not their surname!

As they reach Maat Kro Thorael intersperses himself between the furious blemmyae and the Alodite prince. Oyem attempts to shove him aside but Kro stands their ground, trying to grab Oyem. The two struggle, Oyem managing to strike Maat only once, before bird and blemmy break apart, exhausted. Kro still blocks Oyem's path to Maat, but it appears the latter has calmed down somewhat from their original rage.

Oyem turned to the awestruck peasant who had been the target of Maat's wrath. They stuck a hand underneath their feathered cloak and revealed a bag full of garnets, worth more than the peasant could ever expect to make in their lifetime. One with a heart so courageous ought to have a house and lifestyle equally fine. Here, take these, and when anybody asks you how you became so wealthy, tell them that a good deed will never go unnoticed, not a cruel one unpunished.

    Kro, Oyem, et al

"Immortal Sun, what is that thing?"
"It's like a Dolod, but somehow worse. At least Dolod have heads. I feel like I'm staring at this thing's nipples."
    "Is it a Blightspawn?"
    "Blightspawn do not wear cloaks."
"Is it a cloak when it's worn like that?"
"It doesn't stop being a cloak when it's worn wrong."

The whispered conversation between the two women on horseback was a mystery. It seemed like it would be difficult to yell in Ashiric, a whole language of lilting sighs and hissing. The sultan's tongue was spoken across all of Sikar, at least among the noble and educated. Here it was a mere curiosity.

These princesses looked to have the most magnificent asses in the world -- as large as any in Kiswa and then more. Well muscled too. They had no equal in this strange land; these beasts had been bred for war and swift travel from a lost age, so they had as little in common with a donkey as a camel. Smart as some children, the horses stepped away from the scuffle before their riders could even nudge them with their heels.

When the thing matched Kro's strength, that gave them pause, though it was difficult to tell. Among foreigners, the Ashir are stoic, soft spoken, and slow to act. This is a shala, to be at peace, or at least to not give provocation. Men and women wear headscarves and cover their faces and loose mohair robes to obscure their posture and stone knives. These two had lovely golden eyes at least, traced with thick black lines. Only a few gold beaten bracelets hinted that they were persons of any meaningful stature. They watched the blemmyae with interest, still unmoving and saying nothing that could be understood.

"What is he doing? Is he giving gems to that man?"
"I think Maat has aggrieved him. This is some sort of compensation for his troubles."
"I want rubies. Perhaps they are cheap and plentiful here."
"Perhaps we should tell him we are insulted as well and he will pay us."
"Kro! Do you know what he is saying? Ask him for rubies. Say that Maat has threatened to shoot us as well!"

The man with short blonde hair and the physique of an agile hunter sits a little straighter when pointed out.

"But first please tell me how are things in your homeland and how is Clodrammy I have not heard from her in a while."
Varsha returns the king's smile. While Angna nods again and takes her leave to explore the market, the fulji remains to continue conversing. "Clodrammy is in good health. She vouches well for the interests of your people, and her advice helps dictate the goods that we bring to your market today. In particular she has taken a liking to the fields around Marut and the Matarin. She spends days on end studying plants and the animals there, both wild and cultivated. She has, in fact, sent back with us a number of clay tablets with her observations on those for you. I will have the tenders unload them once a cart can be brought to move them to - it is not a small number."

In the meantime, the Harud woman has side-stepped the talk to step in front of the blonde man that Yorick indicated, smoothly dropping to sit cross-legged in front of him. Phaudl looks at him for a long moment, taking in his physique appreciatively. She makes a small gesture with one hand, palm upward at chest height, from him toward herself. Varsha notices, and pauses her own speech, clarifying for Yorick and the man, "She wishes an introduction to him. Phaudl does not speak, but makes herself generally understood regardless - and is not shy when she is interested in something, or someone."

While Oyem faces off with Kro, Angna has also been drawn by the commotion surrounding these newcomers. Whatever disturbance centers around the young archer and the peasant seems well in hand, and her attention shifts to the two ladies and their mounts. The creatures themselves are interesting, looking both hardier and more nimble than the asses of Kiswa. It is difficult to tell much of the young women, nearly fully shrouded in their robes and scarves, but they appear human. Their language sounds softer and more melodic than the other tongues being spoken by the newcomers, as they speak rapidly to each other.

The Efra raises her palm in greeting to garner their attention. Certainly there is a Truthseer around somewhere, but the fiery warrior does not have the patience to go looking for one, making her own introduction and trusting in clarity of her intent. "Hello strangers. I am Angna. Where are you from, and what are these creatures you ride?"
"It is in the compelling zest of high adventure and of victory, and in creative action, that man finds his supreme joys."

    Angna

People usually asked about the giant lion first. The woman on the gray mare with the black muzzle sat still, but followed the eyes of the stranger -- likely someone of some local importance, given that the last peasant who addressed them had an arrow loosed his way. Perhaps a sheika. Her features were curious, not entirely human, but anything was better than looking at the squat, monstrous man with no head. Angna's eyes went to the horse, so Ayla assumed she had asked a question about it.

"Hadha haris al-Ashir," she said, clapping the mare on the neck and giving her a rub. Then, once more, a declaration of, "Haris."

Her sister leaned over, giving a minute, equivocating wobble with her head. "Beast is haris. Good beast. For to ride is good."

Supposing the attempt at Kiswan pidgin was a success from the look of understanding it received, both women pulled their scarves down to their chins. Their fine features were welcome in any land. People seemed to be patient with their broken speech when they saw that they were young and beautiful. She continued, "I am Amira Salma. Salma."

"Amira Ayla," said Ayla, pointing to herself. "Hello stranjer Angna!"

"Amira is... childa of the chief. Great chief of the Ashir."

"Ya! Prinsa!" Ayla beamed, supremely confident in her declension of 'prince'. "Amira is prinsa of the Sikar. Baba is, uh, great prins of the prinsan."

"Ya ya, Baba hu sultan... great chief is... kink?"

"Hu malak kink! Zidan is kink. Kink of the Vesparre. Of the Sha. Of the Grain. Of the Left. Of the Qimat Eali. Of the Nellen. Of the, uh... kayaf hadiq janeb?"

Working through vocabulary in her head, Salma gestured up, left, right, then down. Since she had guessed wrong during her last similar interaction, she now understood the cardinal directions to be Top, Left, Hand, and... "He is Kink of the Bottom also."

"Ya, many lands are of the sultanat. Sultanat is of the Ashir. To be of the Ashir is to do smart fight of the ride, to do of good ride, to have good harsan. Men that have beards, have not harsan. No ride. Men that have beards, to do of the grain."

The two princesses nodded to one another, feeling the explanation of their caste and culture had been more than sufficient.

"Who are you? Are you important?" Salma smiled, probably not meaning to sound quite so blunt.
