Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I've got a decent arsenal myself. Haven't really expanded it in quite a few years though. Yeah, no formal days at EC. Just spirit weeks.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I've never collected much o that stuff. Just got a wooden sword and some really awesome knife letter openers.
No wireless I guess, so I won't bring my laptop. I probably won't bring anything, actually. No real magic decks going for me, although I could borrow someones and still play.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
That's a great game, if for no other reason than because you get to roll, like, a billion d6es for attack. As someone whose primarily played DnD, that just gives such an awesome feeling of power.
I'll be bringing extra magic decks. Mine tend to be based off of weird ideas I have, except for my saproling deck, which is pretty basic. That one's just to feed my love of attacking with weird fungus monsters.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I'll bring at least 3 decks. I'm not card-swapping, btw, and I'd like to keep my premades in the premade condition.
I play World of Warcraft, NeverWinter Nights, and First Life.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I'll bring at least 3 as well.
All type 2, so uh, I think a b/u rogue deck, a basic red nukey deck, and a green elfy elf deck.
Frag is awesome indeed.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
In simpletonese please?
My favorite deck has a focus on the number of cards in your hand, which can get to be unlimited, with a draw of 2 cards per turn, if you get the right cards at the beginning. Plus, a creature that's */*, where *=# of card in hand, which, combined with a card that lets you take every plain of yours into your hand in exchange for giving each creature +*/+*, where *=# of plains taken into your hand...
I'm a hoarder, can't you tell?I play World of Warcraft, NeverWinter Nights, and First Life.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
My stuff is all over the place, we never really played by any sanctioned rules. I have, as I said before, a green saproling deck, with, I believe, some white and/or red splash, I don't quite remember. My others are a red/blue deck that's geared around a Firecat Blitz/Rites of Initiation combo, along with some blue spells that return cards to your hand as an alternate cost. Not terribly consistent, but fun when it goes off. Finally there's my green/red/blue deck that has nothing but instants, except for lands and my one Mirari. I believe I have one more kicking around, but I don't remember what it is.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
Now don't start that, it's like those fights with those kids with their imaginary superpower fights.
Nuh uh, because I attached a Neurok Hoversail to it, giving it flying.
Nuh uh, I disenchant your Neurok Hoversail.
Well, I counter your disenchant.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
Hey, are you guys cool with side-decking? I've got one for my white deck but it annoys some people to no end.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I don't have a lot of cards, and I put together a deck once on an interesting premise (made a terrible deck) but regardless, it was 95% proxy. Entertaining. most people didn't like it.
Poison based deck. I think a deck based on poison counters could work, but mine sucked.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
Well, that's a little annoying, just because a huge balancing factor of color hosers is their uselessness against other colors. They tend to be ridiculously strong against that color, sometimes to the point where that color really doesn't have answers to it, though it's my understanding that this has changed a bit in recent years. Even so, it's been my experience that all this really accomplishes is that it discourages people from playing certain colors, and while cards almost certainly do exist that can counter these color hosers, a player is much less likely to have those particular card than you are to see that particular color. I mean, heck, even ward sliver was really, really annoying, since it was basically a card that let you "side deck" in the manner you're talking about. Probably more so, actually.
My point is that, yes, there's no point in using those cards unless you see a particular color, but in turn this means that there's no point in playing that color against you because you're just going to hose it anyways, so those cards are never going to see play. Of course, there are always those stubborn souls who will still play you with that color, or who only have one deck, and in that case the game tends to be a foregone conclusion, barring great feats of luck or preparation, and I've never found one sided games to be particularly fun.
Of course, in more than two player this tends to be less of a problem, since you're relatively more likely to see every color present, where in turn the people using those colors have the option to gang up on you. However in duels this can be really frustrating, because, as I've said, it basically just discourages people from playing certain decks. In my experience this sort of side decking isn't really very friendly to a casual environment, where you don't have hard rules for what's considered your "main deck" and when you can sideboard in cards, so you basically just get to tailor make your deck to best be able to deal with whatever encounter you face. To use a DnD analogy, it's like playing a wizard who, before each rest period, gets a detailed description of what challenges he'll be facing the next day.
Now, all that said, I don't personally have a huge problem with this practice. I don't like it, and I don't do it, but at the same time I won't stop you if you have your heart set on it. I tend to have answers for color hosers anyways, and, though my chances of winning will certainly be less, I'll still have a fighting chance (all else being equal, of course.) I also can't make any assumptions/accusations/condemnations without knowing the cards you're talking about; they might be relatively harmless for all I know. However, its been my experience that this sort of thing makes the game less fun in general. I don't know that this will be the case, and I'm not going to tell you not to, but this is my opinion on the matter.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I hate slivers, and people who brag about their weakest card costing more than my whole deck arsenal.
Also.
I got a Zen Stone Plus today! It's awesome, came with a nice silicone skin/case/glove, 2GB of mem, cost me about 30 or 40 USD, c/o. Mom Corp., and the speaker on it, built it, is louder than my HP Pavillion dv6000's speakers and my PSP 2000/Slim's speakers put together.
Potluck is go.
It's pretty important, plus, I've missed my best friends all summer, so I'll be looking forward to seeing them. No, it isn't you. Don't get annoyed.I play World of Warcraft, NeverWinter Nights, and First Life.

Re: Bay Area/California meetup
I can agree with your assessment for sideboarding in a casual play environment. It can make some games not fun when you put together a deck that specifically demolishes another.
But for tournaments it makes sense to me, as it gives you some options (Given that it's usually a limit of 15 cards in the sideboard) when your on to game 2 or 3 against an opponent and encountered his deck once.
Now, sideboarding with the rest of your cards, not so much good.
For casual though, just a deck without sideboard tends to do nicely. But again, in my case, I'm down for anything. Magic isn't serious business for me.
On the note of a Zen Stone, I've never tried one. I'm still getting all I can out of an Ipod with some shabby headphones.
Granted, I should really organize my music on that thing one of these days. It's a mess of playlists I put together for roleplaying sessions (mmm, background music), and other stuff. Such as "get an essay done overnight" playlists.Last edited by Poison_Fish; 2008-08-20 at 01:56 AM.
