League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
This is the first game thread for the League of Heroes M&M PbP.
Recruiting Thread
OoC thread
Please start every post with your character's name. In combat situations also include Defense, HP, and any damage or active effects/conditions.
Include other mechanical information, including Save DCs for powers, at the bottom of your post after the in-character part.
For this first post, I'm only going to include a small prompt. Go ahead and describe the area your characters are currently in, which identities they're in, and well as what equipment they have with them, if applicable.
Today has been a fairly typical day in Ivy City. The school year draws closer to the end, and the students are restless. The weather matches: It's getting warmer out, but it's definitely not too bad yet; rain has been threatening all day, but hasn't happened yet.
School's been out for a little over an hour, and there are still kids of different ages hanging out, including a few that participate in after-school activities on their campuses.
Somehow, something feels ominous. It might just be the threatening storm clouds, but you can't shake the feeling that those kids are in danger... well, them and you, too.Last edited by Pinnacle; 2008-06-05 at 10:55 PM.

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
Havoc looks into the sky as he stands in front of the ice-cream cart. Gonna rain any minute. the old man manning the cart hands him a cone with a scoop of moose tracks in it. Yep, tryin' to get as much business done as possible. Taking his ice cream, he sits down on one of the benches in front of the school and once again stares into the sky. Man...That History final was a pain. *lick*

MNEMONIC
Inside a classroom, on school grounds a teacher is meticulously organizing papers for his next lecture. Titles read the dynamic of Quantum Uncertainty and its affects on Causality Loops and other Predestination Paradoxes. As he filed them in his briefcase next to some interesting items (a concave disk of bulletproof plastic, polarized goggles and a strange looking metallic gauntlet) he heard a throat clearing from behind him. Without even looking up from his briefcase the teacher asked; "May I help you Dean Withers?"
The Dean's face blanched at man's query. How does he always know who it is??? "Uh, yes Mister Doe I must speak to you of a matter of great urgency."
The teacher snapped his briefcase shut and tucked it under his arm. "Of course Dean." he replied stoically.Last edited by jerichodrumm; 2008-06-06 at 06:46 PM.

SonSon
Monica was walking towards her training dojo when she felt the clouds. Looking up, she realized something wasn't quite right. Perhaps she needed to investigate, but she couldn't just make it there. Perhaps she should go somewhere that might need some help. Noting her location, she realized that the local high school was closest. Slipping into an alley, she switch to her costume, letting her tail free and slipping on her golden mask to conceal her ID. SonSon was ready for action.None of us have tampered with the fundemental natural order when bored. That would be wrong.

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
For a moment, the city seems to grow eerily silent. Then the silence is broken.
You hear distant crashes and startled cries, notable mostly for the fact that these same sounds seem to come from a variety of distances. Something is scaring people that are quite distant from each other.
There is only a moment before you see what that something is.
SonSon and Havoc
Three humanoid robots emerge from around a corner and approach the front of the high school at a good pace, although no faster than a typical human could run. They are identical to each other, formed of steel and bearing no interesting markings of any kind; their design is wholly practical.
They don't have any apparent weapons, but they are obviously very strong, as one of them demonstrates by slamming its fist into a parked car, creasing the hood.
Their "faces" have no mouths and only one central eye that stares straight at the doors to the building.
The ice cream vendor flees at the sight of the damaged car, abandoning his cart.
Mnemonic
Dean Withers has apparently spotted an entirely new matter of great urgency out the window behind John Doe. He points at the window, and then goes to leave the room, quickly and without another word (he says something, but it probably doesn't qualify as "words," what with the gibbering).
If Ras turns to see what brought this about, he sees an unusual figure running straight at his window.
A humanoid robot approaches at a good clip, although not any faster than he could manage himself. It is formed of steel and bears no interesting markings of any kind; its design is wholly practical. It doesn't have any apparent weapons, but is obviously very strong, as it demonstrates by smashing a fence in its way. Its "face" has no mouth and only one central eye that stares straight ahead at the window.
SonSon
SpoilerLooking above the robots' heads, you spot a distant figure hovering far in the air. It is a humanoid figure that wears mostly green with a black cape. It is too distant to make out much more, and it quickly drops from view after rotating, seeming to survey the surroundings.Gamer avatar by kpenguin. I love the tiny little game pad belt.

Havoc stands up quickly, dropping his ice cream to the ground. He looks at it and then looks back to the robots. Damnit! That cost me $3. So, you want a little brawl do ya? Focusing for a moment, Havoc creates four clones of himself.

Mnemonic's jaw went slack for a moment he then grabbed his briefcase and took refuge in the nearby utility closet. I calculate by the metallic juggernaut's current velocity and vector I only have 5.2 seconds before impact, and I don't believe this is a shirt and tie situation. he thought to himself as he hurried to change into his costume.

"Robots, not exactly my strong suit, but maybe I can find something I can do" thought SonSon. She decides to move in closer, as she can't let them destroy the school. She figures her best bet to start is some hit and run tactics to see if she can actually do any damage.

Havoc and SonSon
Each of Havoc's copies land a blow on their robot, but the first two robots seem completely unharmed. The third robot seems to have taken a harder hit, a dent in the metal appearing near its eye. SonSon easily hits the robot in the same spot, knocking it off balance.
The undamaged robots stop their advance and look at the sources of the flames that hit them. The one in the middle connects, but barely, and the copy's force field protects him. The other lands a solid hit, and its target falls.

Despite his curiosity about the Robot's objective he could not permit such wanton destruction. Mnemonic's guantlet hummed to life as it powered up.
He approached the rear of the Metallic Behemoth and threw a punch at what he hoped would be a vulnerable spot.

(Note that one of Havoc's duplicates was defeated.)

Mnemonic
Mnemonic's second attack is far more effective. His gauntlet smashes into the exposed neck joint, snapping its head back and sending it reeling into the teacher's desk. The impact leaves a definite mark on both machine and furniture, and the robot doesn't move to get up as quickly as it should.
The fire alarm goes off; it seems that Withers is trying to respond to the situation himself.

SonSon and Havoc
SonSon spins into a powerful kick and again batters the mechanized monstrosity.
The robot held down attempts to break away from the duplicate holding it, but fails to get away. The one that SonSon hits staggers slightly and moves its arm in her direction--not even enough to really qualify as swinging ineffectually.
The remaining takes a swing at the Havoc duplicate that attacked it, and lands a solid blow; a second copy hits the dirt and fades.
The duplicate holding the robot releases it and the robot doesn't resist; both he and the other remaining duplicate launch blasts of white fire. The formerly pinned robot seems barely singed, while the one already injured by the Monkey Girl's attacks is more seriously hurt.
By now, the street is deserted except for the two of you and the robots, although you realize that may soon change as a buzzing sound issues from inside the school doors--someone has set off the fire alarm.

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
Mnemonic
As Mnemonic watches, the robot moves slightly; it slumps all the way to the floor, and then doesn't move again. It's electronic eye goes dark.
Mnemonic easily opens its head and begins examining the machinery inside. He notices a radio receiver, but no transmitter. The robot was being controlled, but the owner might not know what's happened to it yet.
There is no display and no controls connected to the robot's slightly damaged CPU. Mnemonic would have to connect it to a normal computer to learn more. He doesn't think that would be too hard, but it might be dangerous to the computer if the robot's creator accounted for the possibility; disconnected the computer from any network would probably be wise, if nothing else.
Mnemonic realizes that Mr. Doe might be missed if he doesn't leave the building soon, now that the alarm is going. Still, explaining his absence shouldn't be too difficult.
Spoiler(1d20+10)[20]
SonSon and Havoc
SonSon demonstrates that these machines are built to withstand attacks, not avoid them, as she again hits the robotic rogue with a powerful kick that seems to hurt her more than it hurts it.
The two as-of-yet undamaged robots again swing at the swarm of superhero copies; one just misses, but the other manages to jump up and clobber one of the Havocs over the head. He hits the ground hard and starts to fade. Three down.
The remaining duplicates all launch blasts of burning white flame in unison, all of them hit, and they all make a mark. One of them, one of the previously undamaged ones, falls over backwards (cracking the cement) and has its head knocked to the side. It struggles to right itself.
Nobody has come out of the school building yet, despite the alarm. There probably aren't many people in there left to evacuate at this hour.
With a crack of thunder and a flash of lighting, the threatened rain starts to fall.

SonSon easily wrestles the most badly damaged of the robots to the ground while another struggles to regain its footing.

Mnemonic drags the remains of the robot to a nearby classroom. Thankfully the task was made slightly easier by the large hole in the wall created by the Mechanical Marauder. Ignoring the klaxon wail of the fire alarm he disconnected the room's computer from the internet and hooked the PC to the robot's "brain".

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
Mnemonic
Mnemonic has no trouble getting the machinery connected, and doesn't find a virus or anything else dangerous about it. It doesn't seem as though the robot's designer planned on anyone using the it this way, or at least chose not to bother setting a trap. Or maybe the part containing the trap is simply broken--he did beat the robot up, after all. He's pretty sure he could reconnect the network and internet cables without a problem if he wanted to.
The hero's incredible mind quickly figures out how to tap into the robot's functions. He interprets the data with ease and manages to unlock things that few would be able to crack.
The robot is shaped like a human, but has nothing else in common with one. It has very very little ability to interpret and react independently to its surroundings. It has to be given very specific instructions, which it receives through a special radio channel. Even then, it only responds to a specific voice that it "hears."
This robot's orders were to break into the school through the window, proceed to the science labs, and steal some lab equipment and any chemicals it found. It was to simply walk through any obstacles in its way and to ignore people--unless it was attacked, in which case it was to fight back with its fists until it was no longer being attacked.
Mnemonic also notices that its receiver is still working, and a new order has been issued, this one to a large number of the machines: "Come back home; if anybody follows or attacks you, attack them until they stop doing both, then continue."
This overrides previous commands, so even if any androids had not finished their tasks they are now retreating. Unfortunately, the word "home" was used directly in the command. The robot's mapping system must have been damaged in the fight, because Mnemonic can't find either how the automaton navigated the school or where home might be.
There is no signal now, so Mnemonic can't trace it; he does know the direction that last command was issued from, however, and he could trace any future commands if he set a system up.
SonSon and Havoc
Havoc's duplicates blast the retreating robot in unison and it flies off its feet, damaged, it skitters through the street for a moment. When it stops, it moves slowly to get back up.
Several more of Havoc's clones blast at the very damaged mechanized menace held by the Monkey Girl, to significant success. After the numerous assaults it has suffered, its chest has caved in and its head is knocked to a very bad angle. It goes limp in SonSon's grasp.
The rest of Havoc's alternates are the least successful as their flames fail to cause any significant harm to their targets.
Behind Havoc and SonSon, the doors to the school open. A few people come out, looking too old to be students (which makes sense, considering the time). They spot you instantly and point. They back up against the door, watching the fight and clearly intimidated.

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
Frostflash
Frostflash takes to the air to get a better view of the situation and be better defended from these simple robots. He seeks out the other supers fighting this threat - the more, the merrier.I use black for sarcasm.
Call me Rose, or The Rose Dragon. Rose Dragon is someone else entirely.
If you need me for something, please PM me about it. I am having difficulty keeping track of all my obligations.

Mnemonic disconnects the robot with a flick of his wrist then throws on his raincoat before heading outside.

Re: League of Heroes Issue 1: Kaos Begets Order
Outside the front door of the building, Mnemonic finds the dean and two other teachers standing and staring at the scene before them.
All of you a bridge of ice form, visible above the buildings to the side. Almost instantly, a figure appears there who you recognize as the superhero known as Frostflash.
A short distance away from the school entrance, Mnemonic and Frostflash spot two robots identical to the ones they were fighting; one of these is damaged but still active, while the other has been disabled and lies at the feet of an unusual woman. Wearing martial arts clothing and having a stance to match, her most unusual feature is her apparently prehensile tail.
Some distance away from her, you see a number of identical young men who seem to have just significantly damaged another of the robots.
From his higher vantage point, Frostflash can also see the android that he was previously fighting on the side street. He sees that it should come into the others' line of sight shortly if it keeps up its current path.
