The magic item is just to open the door to the secret chamber, once inside you have to fight you way through the dungeon, solve a bunch of puzzles, and once you do find the big bad evil figure out that you use the bug net the sick kid in town gave you to kill him.

No, not quite. The Broomstick will be a useful tool and weapon, it just dosen't do EVERYTHING instantly like Megadoomer guessed.

Their will be puzzles and a dungeon, but no bug nets or anything of the sort.

I actually had a big comic where I do attack him, but held off because I wasn't sure whether Ninja Chocobo's comic was being used. Then Doomer posted his comic, so it was too late, so I got sick of the whole encounter and left.

Spells of choice today are Shield and Mage's Sword. In theory, the sword should have hurt him, but that would make him a wee bit less susceptible to diplomacy and certainly Lying doesn't really want to hurt/kill him (If he wanted that he would have fireballed him into dust already).
