When I first started watching the show Pinkie was on the bottom, as I found her rather annoying in early episodes, but as time went on her silliness grew on me - particularly when I started noticing similarities between her and Ed from Ed, Edd, n' Eddy, who I always liked. (Though even now I don't always like her bits - not a fan of her in Over a Barrel for instance, though the fact that her trying to do her song again was what triggered the ending confrontation did amuse me quite a lot.) Other than that my preferences have been pretty stable. I like the top three quite a bit, Pinkie is silly and fun, AJ is okay but doesn't usually stand out, and Rarity is the hardest for me to enjoy due to all the fashion stuff and the general attitude she has, but still good from time to time.

Celestia and Luna, I think, should have their respective lunar bodies on their umbrella hats. Discord would have a glass of chocolate milk, half-filled (the half in question being the top).
Twilight would have a book. Rarity would have a diamond. Pinkie's, as said, would be a cupcake (with balloons coming out of it). Fluttershy would have a weeping dragon cute fluffy bunny on it. Rainbow Dash would simply have her Cutie Mark, because, really, what else describes her that well? Finally, Applejack will have, of course, an apple.
Getting into minor characters, Doctor Whooves will have a miniature TARDIS. Derpy will have a muffin. The Wonderbolts will have fireworks (I'd like to see someone manage that). Applebloom will have a hammer and nail. Scootaloo will have her famous scooter. Sweetie Belle will have a music note.

Pony rankings? I generally like all the main characters and my ranking is constantly in flux, but if you were to push me to rank them right now I'd go with:

1. Twilight Sparkle
2. Rarity
3. Rainbow Dash
4. Applejack
5. Fluttershy
6. Pinkie Pie

Twlight, Rarity and Rainbow have a good balance of virtues and vices for a bunch of interesting stories. Applejack is a little too grounded (her main fault is stubbornness) and Fluttershy is too shy and nice, but they work well playing off the other ponies (they're close to tied right now). Pinkie Pie is too zany to be more than comic relief.

My favourite main character however is Spike.

My line of thought has mostly been about deciding which parts of who you are to reveal to who... which masks to wear and when. I haven't reached much of a conclusion

the conclusion is there is no winning when you decide on an exclusionary policy, really. As soon as you break stuff up into who is important enough to know and who isn't, it cascades. There will always be something that causes you distress, always. Beig utterly naked and revealing everythin likewise; it will get back to you that doing so scared somepony away, and it'll hurt, because honesty should never shut down avenues in life but it often does.

But that is, in the end, a good thing. Sometimes it is required to learn the hard way; as the body builds a callous, or develops muscletone. So too does the soul require strengthening and the mind honing. Challenges mean nothing without expectation of loss. And expectation cannot always be inferred. Sometimes you need to lose to refocus and redefine.

The long andthe short of it is, life is going to hurt. You cannot fix that because it isn't broken. But you can hold a grudge, or you can accept it and move on. Kendoka develop an instinctive reflex to strike when an opportunity presents itself. Sometimes, when the adrenaline is high, a kendo student will strike his opponent after said opponent yields, or turns away. It's reflex and not an insult. What's an important distinction is most Americans take it personally, but most Japanese Kendoka shrug. "to sting is the acorpion's nature."

Social lives are about the same. You're gonna take some knocks, and a lot of the time you just want to curl up and cry, take your ball and go home. Sisters, I know I've been there. But doing that is really just being that mean guy who decides to shun someone for the truth, and all of a sudden, you've become the guy who started this mess!

Masks and revelations are easier to work with when you realize that you are somepony else's 'somepony else'. Discretion is a virtue; so is courage, and sometimes you need to stand up for what you're expressing, as well as occasionally zipping lip to not overly rock the boat. It's a balance, and a dynamic one. Thinking "I've found the answer!" is a trap and a lie, because the same answer won't work twice.

In the end, be who you feel you need to be when you need to be that pony. And when times get tough, know your friends are rooting for you. We may not be able to always stop a fall, but we can pull you back up afterwards and help you into the saddle.
