Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Mr. Thanqol, I would like to request a chibi avatar. Specifically I would like a flamingo wearing a fedora. Alternatively, pretty much anything with a fedora would be fine. Um, yeah.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
This is another request. However! I asked Lixie if I should make it, and she said yes, and the entire IRC agreed so it's not really just me making the request, it's multiple people. So I don't have to feel bad about making it.
SpoilerCould I see chibi-human Candles and chibi-human Lixie hanging out or frolicking or something?

Dragons, you say?
*eyes pre-pony avatar*
I must say that these chibi avatars are rather cute. And looking at this latest batch, I can't help but see a small narrative developing...
Fool that I am, I was walking down a darkened alley, when this guy appeared in a puff of smoke and demanded that I hand over all my money:
I would have given it to him... but I'd just been fleeced for everything I had buying adodgycompletely legitimate, totally legal, highest quality watch from this fox:
I told my friend about it later, but he was all "Pfft! Whatever.":
And that's how my day went.

Thank you, thank you I'm glad you like the results!
Unfortunately, midnight passed and I didn't have time to finish today's drawquests. I will do as many as I can tomorrow, but we're also fighting for airtime with the ATG so it might be a few days before I can clear my backlog and start Dragon Month

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Day 252: A Good Dog
Spoiler for sad
SpoilerI always wanted a dog when I was a kid. There were two dogs up the street along the way to school whom I adored, and patted through the fence. I'd feed them my sandwiches every day and spend lunch hungry.
My early experiences with pets were bad; they ran away, or got ill. Until we got Ruffy; a Stauffacher Bull terrier. He was a small, black dog with a big heart and bottomless hunger. He was cunning and manipulative, capable of opening doors, creating diversions and always manoeuvring himself into the most ideal positions. He was a mouser, and earned a respectable tally of caught rats in his time. He could cry like nothing else, an endless series of high pitched whining notes.
When he'd escape from the back yard, on those rare occasions, he'd come right around to the front door and wait to be let in. When someone came passing by him, he'd roll over in the hopeful expectations of tummy rubs. When birds picked at his bones in the yard, he'd run at them, barking, in an endless cycle.
He stayed with our family for twelve years, and was the most reliable creature I've ever known.
He was a good dog.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Oh sweet Celestia. Chibis are adorably... whatever-that-is! Are requests still open, or are you done with them?
SpoilerI would looooove a chibi-Inkblot *points up and left* or Rosetta *points down*, but no sweat at all if you're already done. In exchange I offer you TECTONIC ROBOT'S GREATEST AND DARKEST SECRET.
She's an Indiana Jones-y archaeologist-pony who hides her woes behind a bubbly and smiling facade. He's a kindly psychologist with thinly masked self confidence issues. Together they fight crime!
Really, just tell me to go away if you're already done or overloaded, I won't take it personally! I just figured it was worth asking. I'm used to being too late jumping on the bandwagon!
...
SiuiS made me do it! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Day 252a: Emo Off
Still, I have commitments to keep to, commitments I will not flinch on. Have Mask fighting SiuiS' Thistle over who has the most tragic pony backstory.
Would have liked to spend more time on this. So it goes.
I do really like the bruise effect I figured out, though.

Oh wow! That's pretty awesome! I wasn't actually looking for an avatar, just a random pic, and this one's pretty cool. Might try

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
It would seem that you are using dodge/burn to model. This is not optimal - it is far better to choose shadow colours manually, since that will actually resemble what shadows look like in the real world, even if you get it wrong.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Colours are good but the perspective and composition is way off, sorry. Either the Gryphon needs to lose the left butt cheek (and where is his left leg?) so he's sitting at a side on perspective or the Pony is bending like a banana.
Either way the Pony's feet are not right. If the Gryphon is side on then the Pony's right leg needs to move up and away from the viewer some more, and if the perspective on the Gryphon's ass is correct, then the Pony would honestly need to be almost entirely redrawn.
Use Saeyan's excercise and try to recreate the pair as geometric shapes, it is a bit of a puzzle unfortunately.
I know I keep hassling you about realism and the basics and might seem overly critical at times, but to make a somewhat trite point Picasso had to learn how to draw like Davinci before he could paint like a two year old.

As a side tangent, as a future thing to do at some point or even try now:
You're doing minimalism in the sense of design at the moment - cartoons and the like - but how about minimalism in construction.
By that I mean drawings like your own landscape of seven (I think) lines.
is a face, but is only four lines. If you're going to draw dragons try drawing some with as few lines as possible - also a good opportunity to practice the line weight exercise.
It's something that could be insightful into composition and design which you yourself noted in your picture of the fox - it didn't look like a fox because it looked too much like a cat, right?
I'm talking about breaking things down to as few 'pieces' as you can but still keep it recognisable. Look up Sumi-e art for more of what I mean:

Princess in the sheets.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Can't escape it that easy, I guess. I'll start Dragon Month on February and hope I get it done before then.
Could not stop thinking that.
I actually used the Shading layer for this one as an experiment; you're right it didn't work out, I should shelve that method.
Yes, you're entirely right. I keep learning Things and then not applying them. I wanted to revise that piece but just didn't have the time. I'll do better to keep my lessons in mind as I work.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
Oh, you'll sing anything to get more ponies in bulldozers.
Day 253: Closure
Better, I think, but this was a very minimal-risk piece. I didn't really learn to do anything that I couldn't do already, but instead focused on the technicalities and application.
Anyway, I drew a rescue pony rescuing a rescue pony. Are you happy, Phoe?
Do not even ask about what's happening with that cart.

Re: Thanqol Learns To Draw!
First up the perspective (my favourite word ) on the sash thingy is flat. I've put in green my approximation of where the back of the neck would lie (based on the front right 'shoulder'). The blue is the curve over the pony's back and moving it further away from the front leg to add depth.
The rear of the sash looks as if it's folding down in front of the right thigh (? anatomy is hard on cartoon horses...). If that's the intention I'd put a spot of shading where the purplish line is, or else if should fall closer to the black line.
I used the perspective from the rear feet to get the lay of the piece, and blocked out the line of the shoulders. As you cas see this would move the left foreleg out a bit, which would make her feel more balanced - as it is she seems to be lopsided.
And lastly, assuming the body is straight that is, the whiskey barrel would need to be turned a little more. It matches the direction of the head perfectly, but it shouldn't rotate with the direction she's looking in.
And speaking of which I'd shift the leftmost one up in the frame so her head turn keeps her looking at the rightmost one.
I also think it would be good to add a little defenition to the front hoof along the blue line somewhere so it will seem to be facing forward more, but I'm not familiar enough with the conventions of the art style so say more than that.
Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to include the other one's righthand wing either.
So I kept thinking about it and decided to jump into photoshop and chopped the picture up some:
Spoiler
Left foreleg moved, barrel shortened, second wing added and left character shifted up a little bit. Not going to try the sash - I have no idea how you guys can draw on a computer, it's so awkward with all the clicking and sliding and tabs and whatnot
So, nothing that wasn't already there, just a few tweaksPrincess in the streets.
Princess in the sheets.
