Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
I think it is a little of cultural difference, too. However, it is correct that to join forum games is a competition. So to enter, players much fight each other to make party together. It's not a good system, I think. The only time it is successful is if all players [accommodate] the same theme.
That said, one needs to speak up for themself. If you are easily cowed, how might you play a character that rarely flinches in the face of evil?
Yes, Eris is such an example. Somehow became a heroine character. The alchemist of Far the Atelier was another villain, but not remembered even by players who participated.
Yes, probably it will be such a comic style.
Could you rephrase that? The part about classes, I mean.
To use example, Night Wizard! divides such a [role] and [class], to have [Defender],[Attacker],[Healer],[Caster]. So class can be chosen and role still chosen.
It seems Pathfinder uses such an [archetype] for this purpose sometimes.
However it is seen often of any game type sometimes other players refuse necessary class.
Often of Fire Emblem forum game it is <Cleric>, for example.
As for story, the traditional start to a D&D campaign is "You are complete strangers all sitting in the same tavern, when a mysterious person stands up and says they want to hire some adventurers.", so...
Most GMs, particularly for D&D, just say "play anything". Part of this is because D&D classes, feats, etc. have some fluff built-in, which stays the same in any game of D&D you play. Plus character-building in D&D feels more like a puzzle, so a player can feel proud of something they put together well, and want to show it off. In a game like M&M you have to do most of the description yourself, which makes it harder to get attached to a build.
Then you have games like FATE (including Dresden Files RPG), where your character description is the biggest part of your abilities, and part of character-building is writing your history with other members of the group.Kasanip's Sketchbook 2 Thread

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
It is a bit of a problem with recruitment on this forum. I think the major problem is that with most games, the GM and players don't already know each other, either IC or OOC.
So, you either have to admit players based on a 'first come, first served' basis or based on who writes characters the GM likes the most, both of which have an element of competition. It's the biggest thing I don't like about PbP games, truth be told.
On Evil Characters: I'll note I don't particularly want to get into the mindset required for an evil character either.

Whoa hello, there are some sketches here that I missed.
Does this mean you are wanting music links or that you will be sketching to music that you have been listening to and then sharing both music and art with us?
The squirrel looks like a ghost or something. Perfect for a witch.
First sketch/drawing looks nice, second one could use some more shading or darker lines for the plants at the bottom.
This drawing is very nicely done.If you want a OotS style Touhou avatar, send me a request.

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
Usually, people do take the rest of the party's choices into consideration, but only thinking about one's own character doesn't necessarily mean that the party doesn't work together. In many games, the fact that the characters are individuals and are not made only to maximise the teamwork provides the basis for the role-playing.
In other words, making a character without the team in mind means that the team has to think about how to use their strengths and work together despite their weaknesses.
Those are the basic guidelines, but they are not required to be filled. Since the game has a DM, who controls what obstacles the party faces, a game can be made to fit the style that the players have, rather than having to fit to one particular style. If the party consist of rogues and wizards, the game may focus on intrigue and stealth, while a party with mostly fighters may focus on warfare and battle.
However, most parties still have members who can fill the roles to an extend. A rogue has the best abilities for sneaking and lock-picking, but everybody can learn those skills to a degree, for example. Considering how many games have more than four players, there will usually be someone in the team who can fill every role if they need it.
If you want to play a game that focusses on filling out the roles and balancing the team, that can certainly be done and many DMs will be happy to have such a game, however. It's just that D&D does not require anyone to stick to a predetermined model if they don't want to.
That would be because they are not made to do that. The games are not based on the characters having to have personal data that relates to each other at all. Often, the characters start as strangers, meeting for the first time and having to work together for a common goal despite not having personal data that relates them to each other. They can be related, though, and that is also a good way to play. It's just not the only way.
EDIT: Apologies for rambling about Dungeons & Dragons. m(_ _)m I didn't have much to add about your art that had not been said. They are all amazing, particularly the Legend of Zelda* ones and Lukina.
*I guess I could add that the games are named Legend of Zelda in English? Sorry! m(_ _)mLast edited by Mina Kobold; 2013-05-19 at 03:42 AM.

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
That's how D&D was supposed to work, but it doesn't really work that way. For example:
- Fighters are supposed to provide leadership, spot enemies approaching, and defend their allies from attack, but they don't actually get any abilities which let them do so. (there are other classes which do)
- Most of D&D's healing spells are ridiculously weak. In videogame RPGs combat is long, and there are spells which can restore 100% of a character's hp. In D&D combat usually lasts 3-4 turns, while enemies inflict damage twice as fast as it can be healed. The person with healing abilities would be helping more if they did other things in combat, and only healed between fights (or in emergencies). Or you could just use wands and potions for healing.
Basically, none of the classes are really necessary, just traditional. And it's possible to make almost any class fill any role, though some require more effort than others. Eg. if a spellcaster specialises in summoning, binding and barrier spells ("battlefield control"), then he'll be much better at defending his allies than a fighter. The crusader class is mostly a fighter type, but when he attacks an enemy it heals his nearby allies.
And as Keveak said, an unusual party composition just means you can run a game with a different focus. It's hard to run an intrigue-based game with a traditional party because fighter types often have poor stealth and social skills, so their player will be left out. Likewise you could run a game set in a wizard college, where everyone plays a spellcasting class.Last edited by Prime32; 2013-05-19 at 10:05 AM.

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
There's a difference between being selfish and being assertive. If you keep quiet every time, and you accept that it's a bit of a race for roles, it's silly to complain. You can speak up (often giving a couple options) without necessarily being selfish.
As for the evil mindset, it's very useful to have a number of tools in your repertoire, especially in the case of being a DM or GM.Playground in the Playground

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
My meaning was both! When there is little motivation, I will try to use songs or suggestions. Of course if viewers have suggestions and requests and such, please offer freely.
The squirrel looks like a ghost or something. Perfect for a witch.
First sketch/drawing looks nice, second one could use some more shading or darker lines for the plants at the bottom.
Maybe the scenario is remembered, but the villain probably wasn't, I think. If TechnOkami remembers his name, I will be surprised and happy.
Spoiler
Sorry, to respond to all of Dungeons&Dragons comment was tiring. I want to talk in this thread more often.
When reading Dungeons&Dragons comments, it seemed different scenario like <non-standard play> were used. However, my comments were about <standard play>.
Yes, I agree. However, my expression was opposing to Just_Ice's comment. To accuse not assertive people to be cowardly is not fair, too. Maybe I could be more assertive, it is true. However, it doesn't mean I can't play heroic character if I want. Like this, selfish people maybe can play teamwork in a party. It is difference of reality and fiction, isn't it?
If you want to play a game that focuses on filling out the roles and balancing the team, that can certainly be done and many DMs will be happy to have such a game, however. It's just that D&D does not require anyone to stick to a predetermined model if they don't want to.
I understand of course any character can be created in such a system. Because personal data is not included, it can be envisioned easily one's own concept. It is not bad.
However, also it is not helpful, I think. Always the player characters must relate to each other. Maybe they are friends, maybe they are strangers. But there must be connection and reasons for unite as a group. If this cannot be agreed upon, team doesn't work. Game system does not help this stage.
The explanation of Prime32 was [contradiction]. Somehow I think Prime32 is agreeing with what I said? Even if class is different, roles must be filled. If party of fighters, for Dungeons&Dragons it means potions or wands are necessary at sometime. This probably means [Craft] and [Use Magic Device] skills are necessary. Maybe [Disable Device] and [Knowledge:] skills are necessary too. Also such equipment should be bought. If the selfish players don't think about this, it will be trouble. Fighter who uses [Cure] wands is <Healer>, Fighter who uses greatsword is <Attacker>, Fighter with shield is <Defender>, etc.
And as Keveak said, an unusual party composition just means you can run a game with a different focus. It's hard to run an intrigue-based game with a traditional party because fighter types often have poor stealth and social skills, so their player will be left out. Likewise you could run a game set in a wizard college, where everyone plays a spellcasting class.
You are correct that if nothing is said a cooperation cannot happen. The example of often giving a couple of options is tried to do for such a game. However, it is rarely seen other players try this.Kasanip's Sketchbook 2 Thread

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
There's something about sketchdumps that I like. Also, I spy a little Chanda drawing in there, very cute. I'm actually rather sad that I can't bring her to life, but alas, it's been very difficult having to try and roleplay her.

Those are all amazing, Kasanip. The squirrel may not look overly realistic, but it is quite adorable and everything else is so well drawn that I have no idea where to begin. All I can say is that you drew every single piece very well and have amazing versatility with them.

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
Those are all outstanding Kasanip - you draw like I want to draw heh; great stuff.
The catgirl with the robotic arm I particularly like because she kinda reminds me of my OC, Yumi.*
As Keveak notes - the squirrel is adorable, it makes me want to hug it. Granted I love squirrels to begin with so maybe I'm a tad biased there...
Err, point of all this is "you do good work".
*Yumi lacks a robot arm, but otherwise it's a fairly similar character model; needless to say, I like!Computer is back! Yay!
Feel free to check out my Deviantart page - it's not great, but I'm trying to change that.

Re: Kasanip's Sketchbook 2
I don't like this style of show sketch very much. However, it can be said other style is arrogantly showed. I want to make some complete pictures, but there is only a little time. Also, a new HD must be bought, because it became full. However, I don't know when it can be bought.
Thank you for your kind words. To be sketches, it cannot be said these scribbles are drawn well. However, some of them are liked. I must practice many more times like this.
Thank you! However this type of cat-like character is [Lynks] race. Arm is not robot. It's called [Ie=ga device]:Spoiler

All of these sketches use the computer. It is rare to show real sketchbook pictures.
Thank you! Yes, I have to study for TOEIC test for purpose of [teaching license]. If it can be passed, I can use this avatar is my hope. To be GTM [Great Teacher Mir].
Thank you! Yes, because most it is music sketching, probably it takes about 5 minutes. If song is repeated, it takes about 10 minutes.
Yes, it is Eris who is always this kind of [cross] type witch. Even if she is [sorcerer] type, nickname was [the white witch] (because she has white hair). Probably she would not like squirrels, I think.
Green haired girl is character design, however it is not decided. Somehow the mood of the game cannot be understood, so style cannot be chosen.
Actually it was thought [driving a car], because Lynks are only good at speed and flying vehicle. Probably it is very dangerous and comedy to watch.Kasanip's Sketchbook 2 Thread
