Default Re: [EMPIRE!] A World-Building Game of People & Discovery

Round 11 Actions for Lyradis (subject to change):

    1[Diplomacy]
Diplomacy 5 action to stablize Grmanhil.
The Bangboom clan, taken mostly by the sickness of Pusdeath, has fallen to silence. The Chief himself is publically denounced for instead of attempting curing the virus, sending it to other nations so that the sickness could spread to thousands, with the likelyhood of returning to Grmanhil great. Thousands of innocent people have been killed, Orcs and Men alike, and these crimes against his nation will be imprisoned for his crimes. The Thunderhand clan is placed in charge of the region, and answer to Lyradis. The only of the Bangboom clan to survive is the one that married into the Razdissi clans.
    2[Diplomacy]
Diplomacy 5 action to stablize Requiem.
As soon as the Lyradissians discovered that the denizens of Requiem were their long last people from the Old Kingdom of Lyradis, the leadership bowed to that of the Kingdom of Serendel's sovereignty. As they were a protectorate of the Salterri empire, Lyra strives to make ammends with the Salterri, and with the minor populations within Requiem. The Orcs are sated by the fact that another land within the Serendel Kingdom is primarily of Orcs, and one attempting to unsmear the Orc name after the blunders of the Bangboom clan. Lyra sends a letter to the Emperor of the Salterri to treat with her in her Ancient Kingdom's ruined capital, which bridges the border of Discord and Requiem. Details to follow.
    3[Diplomacy]
Diplomacy 5 action to stablize Selyra.
The people of Selyra have an improved quality of life as a nation of the Kingdom of Serendel. They have sturdier homes, more tools, and have been gifted with the technology to ride the great rhinos within their nation in more efficent capacities. Further, they now have a food surplus, and have expanded in population. The people there are happy, and eager to serve the Kingdom under Jain and Alara's daughter - Elizabeth, who has been placed as the Goveness of this nation.
    4[Faith]
Work with the other nations in curing the Psudeath, and ask the Monks from the Lord of Fire to assist in Grmanhil, Raaneka, and Region 33 in curing the Psudeath.
    5[Diplomacy]
Diplomacy 5 action to stablize Borlmyn.
The merfolk of Borlmyn were at first wary of joining the Kingdom of Serendel, but after some time, their lives are much improved by this decision. The Lyradissians are a romantic people, sticking to their history and ideals, much the same way that the Merfolk have stuck to theirs. Their homes are now made out of fine fired clays, and with the love of the sea that the Lyradissians have shown, not to mention one of the Serendel namesake having gills, a fish tail, and wings, they know that they can be accepted and perhaps understood by the child of Royce and Ryella - Ryek (a perfect Cloudiz form), who has been placed as the Govenor of this nation.

    Non Action Actions -
    Attend the Grand Ball
    • Request the aid of the Temple of Fire in quelling the Pusdeath in Raaneka and Grmanhil
    • Witness the Blazing Avatar's return.
    • Observe the signing of the Heartwaste Peace Treaty, with a certain amount of suspicion, due to the argument during the happenings. While Lyra certainly supports the treaty, but she feels much like Raaneka does. As such, she speaks for the larger delagation of the Dawn League, and commiting herself is almost the same as commiting them. So she must have time to confer with them, lest she act without the best interests of the whole at heart. As such, she needs more time to consider it, and furthermore, be convinced that it will not go up in flames as it has the last two times this has happened. Lyra is cautious. She will not hastily sign something that has been placed in front of her suddenly. All the other neighboring nations were active in the forming of the agreement, yet Lyra was not invited. There is a certain concern to this.
    • Discuss the view of the Salterri in the happenings of the North with Jarrs and Saltiere.
    • Betrothal of Errick of Lyradis to Celwyrr of Jarrland.
    • Betrothal of Liam of Lyradis to Bekya of Wenyavuk.

Spoiler: Official Declaration in Regards to the Second Grand Ball
    Show

A missive is written up by the Ignato Empire, penned in Syana Ignato's own hand. It is sent to all nations who attended the Grand Ball of 381

    Fellow Nations of Telluris,

It is with a heavy heart I write this letter, for these few weeks since the Ball's conclusion have done little to ease the pain it brought. The Triumvirate would officially wish to apologize to the nations of Ashenia, Bordeux, Glazfel, Jarrland, The Jeweled Cities, Kasumor, Raaneka, Razdis, Wenyaveuk, and all others who suffered for the pain and loss suffered by your nations. The Triumvirate too weighs heavy with the loss of Hrathan-Tuor's own High Guildmaster Loki Ethmorl, The Ignato Empire's Crown Prince Korath Toranath Ignato and Prince Kilwen Ignato, and the many Genivanan mashahidi lost in the terrible disaster that marked the Avatar's rebirth. It was neither intention nor desire that such a disaster might occur within our lands so as to affect so many nations adversely. We had hoped to help reunite a divided church, restoring the Flaming way, but the danger of fire was too great and overcame us. We pray for those lost and that the reborn Avatar might control these destructive tendencies of fire in such a way as to keep such a tragedy from ever occurring again.

Let us focus not on more sorrow, so prevalent is the feeling since the incident, but focus instead on the good that came from the Ball. The agreement to protect the Heartwaste, a bold step forward in the unification of Telluris, is hopefully the precursor to an age of peace. The betrothal of Dyamusan Ignato to Alice Bordeux may hopefully mark the understanding between north and south and act as a venue through which peaceful restoration may continue. Though Korath lies dead and my heart weeps for him, his blood is carried forth by our daughter, Mira, and the child I feel inside me. If it is a boy, as I believe, he shall be named after his father and it would be the pleasure of mine that he might meet his paternal grandmother in Ashenia. Even as life dies, new life is born and it is hoped for and prayed for in the Triumvirate that this new life may live to grow up into a world safer than the one we have witnessed so far.

*Every single nation recieves a Kasumori messenger on dragonfly back that carries a message, sealed with the Hurosha Cloudiz symbol.*

To all races and nation of Telluris,

It is my pleasure to anounce the start of the first iteration of the Round of Prowess, a race to see who is the best beast handler, hovercraft rider or even runner there is. This race is held in honor of my late brother, Riphal Earthguard, who sacrificed himself at the Grand Ball to save many lives who otherwise would have been lost. Let us honor the souls of the fallen by honorable competition, showing off that our Prowess is great, and that the lives that have been lost were not lost in vain.

The race start in the year 386, at the first cycle of the sun, 7th pyrith: Mystery, on the day of the Sword. Everyone willing to participate must fill in the required forms at least 3 months before the start of the race. There is a maximum of two teams per kingdom or empire. Of course, there will be prices. The first two teams that finish will get a young Tânedhan (OOC: Phoenix) to join them on their further endeavours.

I wish everyone great Prowess in these difficult times.

    Signed,

Nyllana Earthguard, Empress of the Hurosha Empire, Eienguard of Kasumor

OOC: if you want to join in, please enter your team here. Rules are also on this page: Here

    Round Twelve: Begin!

Don’t forget to link to any rolls you make for ANY Attribute checks, plus rolls for rulers you will start using at the start of next round. If you want a new ruler in the next round, you must state so in your action post for this round and link to their rolls. Any increases from actions for this round are counted for the ruler you start your next round with (because it’s handier to account for by the co-GM), which may or may not be your current ruler.

    Good luck!

    NPC Actions!
Just as a note to all, I don’t always post NPC actions, either due to not having time or inspiration for it, or because it doesn’t seem necessary. Any agreements of trade and such the southern nations conduct with the Salterri Imperium can be counted as confirmed.

    Lucky!
    +1 Luck for…
    …Aspi!
    …QuintonBeck!
    …Zabbarot!
    …ImperatorV!
    …HisHolyAngel!
    …Rizban!
    …Aedilred!

    Growth!
The fostering of the blade-feathered flightless birds in Sympolemou has gone great! It is possible this round for Sympolemou to get rid of an existing Good resource in exchange for being granted the birds as a Good resource. This requires an action, but is not a Special action.

    Investigate!
The Raaneki have turned their Heartwine into a deadly weapon… of partying!

Lord Sunder of Jarrland has ventured inside the Mia Isabella and found no people inside. Through contact with the northern countries, it has been established that the Mia Isabella is a Guilderene exploration vessel of the age before ocean-faring ships.

The Sympol appear to have run out of poison to experiment with.

    Explore!
    Nothing has been found yet.

    Colonize!
    Raaneka finishes colonizing region 11-B.

The Priory of Ascension finishes colonizing region 33.

    Claim!
The Battle of Wits for Tekorva shall be fought this round between Kuramkesh, self-proclaimed Elder-Emperor, Lady Valineth Varinel, Queen of the Heartwaste, and Kokuei Earthguard!

Keldagrim has fallen into disarray. What has happened to the royal family? What has thrown this kingdom into chaos? Nevertheless, the goblins appear to be taking advantage of it! Keldagrim is down 17000 inhabitants. Both the Hurosha Empire and Razdis have claims to the region.

Sycia has an ancestral claim to the not very internationally active Felitora.

The GLWIH are acting weird... probably something with their spying? Not much has been heard from them for a long time. Both the Glazfell and Ignato have a claim to it. Both are very clearly fake, but the citizens of GLWIH are blissfully unaware. Blissfully... for now.

The priests of Scla'ca have decided to dedicate them much more to faith than politics. Alydaxis has a claim to Scla'ca.

The United Lacertian Dominion is no longer United and just Lacertia. Nobody has a claim to it.

    War!
Militants begin to prepare sword and shield and spear and fire lance in many lands throughout the Grand Coalition and the Northwest--all but Ashenia and the Triumvirate lands. Summer is coming!

The Salterri Imperium continues to blockade Cassia with 12000 naval troops and has sent 1000 naval troops to blockade region 70 as well, blocking trade from it entirely. Qzare Xiu Wandao has issued the Bordeux Concordat an ultimatum. If Cassia is not surrendered, they will declare war and attack.

    Convert!
The Glazzfel now contains more people of the Doctrine of Frost!

Skarval now contains more people of the Doctrine of Frost!

Gwrystîn now contains more adherents to the Calorum Lord of Fire Reformation!

Guilder now contains more worshippers of the Lord of Fire!

Celero now contains more worshippers of the Lord of Fire!

Kasumor now contains more worshippers of Bori, the Great Eel Spirit!

    Terror!
Bor-Teire is caught in civil war as Lord of Fire worshippers spread! Xiu Wandao has retaken the Silver Throne from his brother and reacts harshly to this development.

    Infection!
    Pusdeath infection spread:
    Shikurai; 3000 civilians lost.
    Woodwind
    Genivana; 1000 soldiers lost.
    Hrathan-Tuor
    Raaneka
    Guilder; 1000 civilians lost.
    Ashenia; 1000 civilians lost.
Grizzland (region 30); 3000 civilians lost.
Grmanhil; 1000 soldiers lost; 6000 civilians lost. Lord of Fire monks have aided the new Lyradissian government in containing and destroying the pusdeath plague.
Region 33; 4000 civilians lost. Lord of Fire monks were turned away from the borders, as the Salterri specifically do not allow priests from other faiths in their lands and their cities. Healers from Lyradis have been allowed beyond the border towns.
Requiem (region 61); 3000 civilians lost. Apparently the pusdeath has spread even further into the greater Imperial Southern Territories.

    Other!
Hartigan Biûrkahâd has died in captivity.

The Sycian playwright Tarcbjorn’s eldest son has apparently become a gladiator after the Islanders turned the theater that was being built in Tar into an amphitheater. Tarcbjorn could not be reached for comment. Friends of the family say the man is not pleased.

Meanwhile, the story about the Blazing Avatar and the High Priestess of Yphine settling on a banana farm on the north pole has gotten quite popular in Wenyavuk, though it has been introduced as more of a storyteller’s tale than a play, due to lack of good, large buildings in Wenyavuk.

Several Fire monks have been arrested in Ashenia while observing the growth of the new volcano.

In Ashenia a horse with a split horn on its head has been born.

Tarcbjorn’s latest play, Southern Sensibilities, is a trilogy. The first details the war of two factions, the Knights of Pain and the Salt-Skimmers, and the subsequent capture of the leader of the Salt-Skimmers, the trials of his imprisonment and eventual rescue by a giant, after which the two factions make peace.
The second is about a man whose hubris leads him to declare himself stronger than gods, which ends up with his city burning to the ground. He is saved by Syivine, a woman with green wings who throws snow over the city to douse the flames, but he decides to take his own life as redemption by setting himself on fire.
The third tells a story typical of Tarcbjorn: one of love and misunderstandings, as five people meet at a masked ball and dance and court each other, falling in love and chasing after the wrong people. It has a happy ending in that three of them eventually end up together--a girl who becomes a fae queen being one of them--one gets stuck in a horse-sized bottle of wine and one marries a goat.

A serial killer is running rampant in Qarimos, his victims left behind having two circular holes right next to one another from what look like stab wounds in various vulnerable parts of the body.

Peasants in Tuorkey lands tell stories that during the Grand Ball two serpentine beasts were seen fighting above the senate building, a winged snake made of fire and a catfish with antlers and fur made of light. Credible sources have not been verified.

A great storm begins to coalesce over the Blue Volcano on the border of Gunung and Pryonia.

People in Calorum and Aloren have seen flashes of fire blaze overhead in the night, always crashing into the northeastern side of Heaven's Blade.

From deep caverns and cracks in the ground throughout Sulvan's Fury smoke has begun to rise, mostly from noon each day for three hours long.

First Brother Adam has sent monks to Selyra and Borlmyn, just in case the pusdeath spreads there.

A new ballgame seems to be getting popular among the highborn youth in Salteire. It's called Gods Ball and the ball may not touch the ground or any object not worn or held by a player. It's typically played in a field filled with statues of heathen gods that a handful of nobles have come to find interesting to import.

The headmaster of the University of Severikand has made an order for several large lenses to be used in bigger telescope at their observatory to get a better look at the stars.

    • Dusk Knights – Twenty Five years ago when Nyroth was first brought into the folds of the Ignato Empire its noble lords and houses composed of the fae folk were barred the right to election in the Senate for favor of the lizardfolk rebels who aided the Empire in bringing the land under their protection and overturning the centuries of slavery within the Nyroth lands. In the battle for conqeust slave legions of lizardfolk were killed as well as impromptu militias composed of faefolk lords and their vassals. When the dust had settled the lizardfolk former slaves held the power in Nyroth lands, embracing the religion of their brothers to the west and securing their place within the Imperial, now Triumviral, Senate. The remaining faefolk lords maintained their lands and control but with the loss of their slaves and influence many of these lordships fell on hard times, selling off land to the rising lizardfolk class and dwindling in number. As of the year 385 only twelve noble houses of the original near fifty remained and a deal was struck with the Empress to allow them to regain their prestige. The Nyrothian noble houses would raise and maintain for the Triumvirate legions of troops and in doing so each noble house that did so would free their family line from prevention in running for senator, with the population still heavily favoring the faefolk the nobles knew if they could do so they could regain their power and prestige and the nobles set to work organizing the Dusk Knights.
The Dusk Knights proper are the commanders of the Nyrothian legions, faefolk born of noble Nyroth blood and and taught to fight with sword and shield in plate armor upon the back of the Kralax imported in from Alydaxis. Each legion contains roughly 50 proper Dusk Knights with their accompanying troops and aides making up the bulk of the numbers. Work by the Nyroth nobles has seen the role of Knight glorified to draw attention from members of the noble houses to serve and their efforts seemed to have worked as more and more young nobles take up arms in hopes of becoming Dusk Knights in service to the Triumvirate.

Spoiler: Tempest Grant in the Kingdom of the Jarrs
    Show

The Guilder ship left them in Salteire to make the rest of the journey overland. The mood on board was sombre; Athelmark had felt obliged to delay his exploration of Domhan to return to Jarrland with his daughter's remains, and was doing his best not to speak to anybody without being openly rude. The events of the Grand Ball still weighed heavy on the crew, with the urn containing Eirwynn's ashes seeming to cast a shadow across the ship.

As the Guilder ship turned for home, the Jarrs transferred to a Salterri barge to travel up the Sayleen river to the mountains. The Sayleen was a depressing and muddy stream, wide but shallow, its waters brackish and devoid of significant fish or bird life. The empty farmland on either side lent the whole area a deadened impression, and morale on board the barge seemed to sink yet further until they finally disembarked in the foothills of the Discord mountains for the trek through to Jarrland. Although it was not yet winter, the mountains were expected to be cold, especially compared to the tropics through which they had passed. and Tempest was presented by her hosts with a luxuriant set of furs in the expectation she would feel the cold more than most.

The border was marked by a basic sign and a couple of Jarr warriors with spears and claymores. It was a desultory guard to place on an international frontier, but the message was clear: the kingdom might be under Salterri protection, but it was still a sovereign state. Once past the border, the mood seemed to lift slightly, and many of the party seemed to become outright cheerful once Jarburg came into sight.

Jarburg, Tempest was told, was the provisional capital of the kingdom and one of the ancestral homes of the Jarrow clan – the seat of the royal family. Here they were met by Athelmark's brother Alfwyr, acting regent in Athelmark's absence and current heir presumptive. His hair had kept its colour slightly better than his brother's, giving him a more youthful impression, though Mere informed Tempest there were only two years between them.

Although it was technically the capital, Jarburg was little more than a village: a population of only a few hundred, and the town dominated by the royal hall, a grand building of wood. Efforts had been made to civilise the interior, with hanging dyed fabric and even a few books, but there was nonetheless a layer of rushes covering the stone floor, fires roared in open pits and hearths, and at night the warriors would sleep in the hall under their furs. Tempest was given a private room, again well-stocked with fur and woollen blankets.

They remained in Jarburg only for two days – just long enough to hold a formal homecoming ceremony for Eirwynn's ashes. Her soul was commended to the Lord of Fire and her ancestors in a way which seemed to mix and match elements of the native faith with that imported from elsewhere. A week of mourning was officially declared for the dead princess, although it would be delayed until the end of the year. Alfwyr would escort the party the rest of the way, as Athelmark was to remain in Jarburg to deal with any urgent matters before returning to the north.

The new road – apparently opened only two years before – led from Jarburg to Horbeach on the coast, the largest town in the kingdom – and made a huge difference to the quality and comfort of travel. Now no longer trekking round highland tracks, the group made rapid progress, with only one brief diversion so that the royal family could hang tokens and fetishes belonging to Eirwynn on the Great Cedar: yet more suggestion of a latent paganism at the heart of the kingdom despite any ostensible allegiance to the Lord of Fire.

Eventually Horbeach came into view. Unlike Jarburg, this was a true town – although most of the buildings were wooden, there rose among them stone houses, presumably belonging to the nobility, with more under construction. The people here, Athelmere told her, were of the Horwik clan, although there was no obvious physical difference between them and the highlanders she had seen at Jarburg. Their clothes may have been more colourful, and their outerwear of seal- or shark-skin rather than fur, but the differences to a foreigner would have been considered minor, and entirely cultural. A faint aroma of fish hung in the air and the docks were crammed with boats: while none of them approached the size of the great ocean-going ships of the Jewelled Cities, these people obviously lived for the sea.

The reason – or a possible reason – for the delayed week of mourning also became apparent, for a celebration had clearly been planned to welcome Tempest to the town, and mourning for Eirwynn would have conflicted somewhat awkwardly. The windows were hung with bright banners, and a flag had even been made proclaiming “Welcome Lady Tempest”. The people thronged the streets to cheer her and the royal family as they entered the town and made their way to what seemed to be the old clan chief's hall at the centre of the town.

Here she was introduced to Villem, Mere's uncle on his mother's side, the acting head of the Horwik clan in the absence of his father, who gave her the usual spiel about welcome and making herself at home in his town. Villem and Alfwyr gave brief speeches to the assembled people, emphasising how privileged they were to have a lady of Tempest's pedigree visiting and greatly flattering her mother and grandfather. Once Alfwyr stepped down, Tempest was given the opportunity to speak if she wished.

After the initial welcome ceremony was over, Tempest was shown to her accommodation for the time she would spend in the kingdom: a new stone building, furnished in such a way as to suggest this might actually be the best-appointed house in the town. In a way the house seemed to represent the impression so far gained of the people: the Jarrs knew they were backward and barbarous compared to many of the peoples to the north, and took a perverse pride in this, but at the same time were working earnestly to raise themselves to what they perceived as foreign standards as quickly as possible.

Having been shown round, Tempest was finally left alone – other than a couple of servants, and with instructions to call if she needed anything at all, of course - until the continuation of her formal welcome later that evening. The whole town would be given over to the revelry and feasting, and judging from the sounds coming from the town square the beer barrels had already been breached.

Spoiler: The Great Charter of 387
    Show

By decree of Athelmark, rightful king of the Jarrs, the foregoing shall be law in this kingdom with immediate effect:

    Concerning the Succession

The King of the Jarrs is Athelmark son of Eldin.

Athelmark's heir is his brother Alfwyr son of Eldin.

Alfwyr shall be succeeded by the eldest agnatic descendant of Athelmark, to be succeeded by the eldest agnatic descendant of Alfwyr, and so in perpetuity.

In the event of the extinction of the male line of Athelmark or Alfwyr, their place shall be taken by the eldest male descendant of the female line of Athelmark of Alfwyr as appropriate.

In the event of the complete extinction of the line of Athelmark or Alfwyr, the rightful king shall be the eldest male descendant of Seirwynn Jarrow and Wiltor, Duke of Sunder on the same preconditions as above.

In the event of the complete extinction of the line of Eldin Jarrow, the rightful king shall be the eldest male descendant of Eirmynn Jarrow and Offred, Earl of Isling on the same preconditions as above.

In the event that there are no male heirs of Jarrow remaining, the eldest female descendant shall inherit as appropriate on the same preconditions as male heirs above.

Should there be no legitimate heirs, the rightful king shall be Eldin FitzJarrow son of Alfmark or his eldest descendant.

In the event that the rightful king is the sovereign ruler of a foreign power, he shall not succeed to the throne nor once enthroned declare war on behalf of Jarrland in respect of that foreign realm without the consent of the Royal Council.

The rightful king shall be confirmed and crowned by the Royal Council. It is affirmed that the king is sovereign in his own realm and none has the authority to prevent the rightful king's accession save the Royal Council in the situations above described.

Spoiler: Current line of succession, plain English explanation

This is to confirm the previously ad hoc arrangements. The kingship alternates between the eldest male-line descendant of Athelmark and Alfwyr, passing to their female-line descendants if the male line becomes extinct, then ultimately to their sister's line and the lines of their uncles. Any male heir is preferred to a female one, but women are not prohibited from inheriting.

If Mere and Tempest have children, they will succeed following Alfwigg according to the current line.

    1. King Athelmark
    2.Alfwyr Earl of Jarburg
    3.Athelmere son of Athelmark

[386] Kamik leaned back, put his feet on the table, folded his arms across his steadily balding head and took a deep, relaxed breath. Ever since he had been assigned the position of Chief an Banyuk, life had been good. Even though the title sounded similar to those which the chiefs of the four tribes held, it was something quite different. When the trading post at the southern border of Wenyavuk had been completed, Chieftain Näiyop had decided that it would be independent from all tribes to avoid disputes. Even though only 200 Na'nuk lived and worked here, it was technically a fifth tribe - and he was the chief. It was a much less influential position to be sure, but he imagined that it was also much less complicated. Sure, there were taxes to collect and merchant disputes to resolve, but nothing ever got out of hand and it was easy to obtain goods from the South here, since all trade to and from Wenyavuk went through the outpost. Kamik reached for a box of dried fruit one of his subordinates had confiscated from a Nyrothan smuggler earlier this week. It would have been a shame if it were to go to waste, the chief thought to himself.

As he was halfway through the box - saving the dried mango for last - the door flew open and his second in command stormed in, followed by a gust of frigid air that made Kamik's hairs stand up. The chief grumbled "What is it?", placing the box of fruit on his legs and cleaning a bit a dried fruit from his teeth with his small finger. Mauja was at least 20 years the chief's younger and where her superior was relaxed and conniving, the young Na'nuk was a stickler for protocol. It thus came as no surprise when she began to give a formal report. What came as a surprise however, was the fact that the words didn't quite want to depart from her mouth today "There's.. there a-are... S... Ssy..." she stuttered, earning a stern gaze from the chief. "There's what? Spit it out already!" he commanded, slightly alarmed by Mauja's pale face and the fact that the wind was still blowing snow into the room through the door which Mauja had neglected to close. Finally she burst out "There's Sympolemou outside. Six hundred of them." The chief was on his feet in an instant, catapulting the box from his lap and sending pieces of dried fruit flying in all directions. "There is WHAT?" ha asked, all color draining from his face. Mauja slowly regained her composure, this was what she had been training for after all, unlike all the others here "There are six hundred Sympolemou outside. Some are mounted on giant rats. They have enough timber with them to build dozens of siege weapons and stones for ammunition. They're armed, mostly with axes and warhammers it looks like. The demand to speak to us." While Mauja spoke, the chief had rushed to the chest where he stored his armor and was now desperately trying to fit his cuirass over the belly that had grown considerably since he'd been assigned to this position. "Well. Yes." he mumbled, turning to his subordinate, finally giving up on trying to fit into his armor. "Then go talk to them. I'll alarm the others. Go!" he instructed her, rushing through the door.

When Mauja returned to the courtyard about a quarter of an hour later, the chief had assembled all 30 of the outpost's guards. Unlike the chief himself, most of them still fit into their armor. Barely. They stood in formation, facing the chief who was giving them instructions with unsteady voice. As Mauja approached, the chief turned around "Well?" he sighed heavily "What are their terms." The young Na'nuk's expression was a mix of disbelief and amusement as she answered "They say they are here to build theaters. Not here, in Wenyavuk that is. They want to join the next caravan that leaves for the Tears." The chief laughed in disbelief, but Mauja just nodded "They even have an architect from Woodwind with them, he showed me the plans.". Slowly, Kamik's eyes began to widen until suddenly, he burst into a guffaw that was quickly joined by the other guards, all of them relieved that they wouldn't die on Sympol blades after all. "Well then," he grinned "let's find them some sleighs to put their siege material on, shall we?"

[388] Hiykan embraced this father. "I wish you would reconsider" he said, knowing that his attempt at swaying Näiyop in his decision once it had been made had little chance of success. Still, with a mischievous smile that betrayed him to be his father's son he added "You're not that young anymore old man. You've done more exploring than any other Na'nuk in all our history. Leave this to your people, there's more than enough volunteers." The chieftain smiled, patting Hiykan on the shoulder "There are many. But I cannot ask of them what I would not do myself. Not if I deserve to be called the Explorer. It is settled and arranged, I will lead the expedition myself. But if it eases your mind, I have every intention of returning." He smiled and embraced his son again.

Imnaya was not sure what she could say that her husband hadn't already, when Näiyop turned to her. But the chieftain surprised her and didn't give her a chance to speak at all. "I know that you, like the others, would rather not see me go on this voyage." He smiled knowingly and continued "I suspect however, that your motives are quite different, and you would rather go in my place, if you could." As she opened her mouth to protest, Näiyop raised his hand and cut her off "I am glad that we are so alike. But this is my time for exploration. Your's lies yet ahead." He embraced his daughter in law as well "Take care of my people for me, while I'm gone. And him too!" he added, grinning at Hiykan.

Finally, the chieftain turned to his sister and his wife. He embraced Ania carefully, trying not to squeeze the shoulder that was still paining her. He said nothing but only looked at her, yet both knew what was left unspoken. Näiyop gently grasped Elina by the arms and rubbed his nose against her's. "Please look after those two", he said to the two women with a nod in the direction of Hiykan and Imnaya "I'd like for the palace to be still standing when I return." Before any of them had a chance to respond, her turned around and headed for the ship that was waiting behind the Institute, ready to take him to the North.

    FLUFF
    Spoiler: Tempest in Jarrland, arrival
    Show

After her arrival, Tempest did her utmost to downplay her pedigree, as Villem and Alfwyr had mentioned. Her grandfather was sailor and pirate raider, who turned away from his barbarous past and dragged their lands into the modern world. Her parents worked their way up, earning the respect of sailor and soldier alike before attempting to lead their country.

Yes, she did hail from a place called the Jeweled Cities. For two generations, those names had been to inspire. Only now did they truly describe their lovely communities. She had only been here a little while, but she saw much of the same spirit and desire in the Jarr people. She was very complimentary of them.

    Wounds, Part 1

I don't know how long I've sat here, staring at my reflection in the ice. The left side is exactly as I remember it, a soft blue with normal features, but the other...no. I cannot describe it, for I cannot bear to focus upon it long enough to remember the details. That maroon tone with blackened spots, the yellowed eye that only halfway works, the cracked seams where blue met wrong, the peeling, festering strips that refused to stay clean. It's all wrong, false. It shouldn't be there, but it is in spite of it all. The act of a divine, punishing the hubris of another for a cause that didn't matter. I lift a hand to it and close my eyes, feeling the cracks and misshapen parchment that is now my flesh. It feels dry and stiff, like a layer of rawhide left in the Skarvali sun, and there is no sensation from my face at all beyond simple pressure as it is compresses deeper tissues. I don't leave my hand there long, as the temptation grows to try to tear it off and throw it into the snow. Such a thing would only bring pain like being burned all over again, I know, and I doubt that I would survive it.

And then where would I be? I would be dead, of course, and dipped into the ice next to him until it re-froze, and a new cairn built to mark my resting place. Probably one twice as large as his, simply because I am King and he not. Prince Fargen would become King Fargen, and the dull boy would spend away all of my coffers on Guilderene whores or Raaneki Heartwine. He would throw parties and fill Saenord-Konig with bastards. He would have all of his advisors put to death the moment they questioned him. He would be manipulated and cheated by every aspirant on the map, and hand off fiefs to any man with a sword and some kind or threatening words.

Perhaps I should not speak so ill of Fargen. He may be a mome of a boy, but he's all I have left.

Taking a deep breath, I reach for my mask once more, and set it in place. It's a thing I found and adapted to my own use: A stag's mask, meant to be used for a character in an old play who was struck by a human's arrow, injured by a foe that they could never have stopped. After all, an honest hunter is not defeated by a mere creature of the forest! Finding it grimly appropriate, I struck it in half and wore only the left side, so that all might see the side of my face I still wish to show, and the nobility of a painted animal on the other. In consequence, my old name of "Hyperborean", that had stuck after my zeal in expanding northward so long ago before the Sympol and Sycians succeeded where I had failed, fell out of use entirely. Now I listen to my courtiers calling me "King Hroar One-Antler" when they believe that I cannot hear them. I should have had them killed for their insolence, but strangely I like the sound of it as it washes over me, and could listen to it all day without so much as a frown. Perhaps that is simply because it is not "King Hroar the Burned" or some equally terrible epithet.

Returning from my thoughts, I look up and see the cairn, a pile of stones set above a dead man to mark his final resting place. Sighing, I lift the new stone I have brought, a Tear of the Goddess large enough that I need two hands to hold it, and set it atop the pile. I barely hold myself together, resisting the urge to let my own tears fall. No, this is a place sacred to a father, and I cannot allow the salty water to ruin the clean ice. Looking around one last time, I spot Ancir, just watching me with a frown. As soon as she knows I've seen her, she simply turns her back and walks away, as if she weren't intruding.

The damned girl's been growing bolder of late. She knows she was spared where good Unfurc died and seems content to rub it into my face at every opportunity. She takes it upon herself to come here whenever I do, not to grieve for her brother but simply to watch me, as if I were some creature to be studied and classified! I cannot deny that she is ambitious: She's been using her charms to turn over the courtiers to her favor, hoping that I perhaps would not notice. She's been avoiding any attempt at marriage, so that she remains fully independent for now, as she knows that her lineage will make her safe from spinsterhood. Further, that Catborn in the library mentioned that she'd been looking through the lawbooks, no doubt trying to find a way into the succession. Ambitious indeed; I've no doubt that she'll make a bid for the throne before my blood finishes freezing.

Perhaps that would not even be a bad thing. She is cunning, to be certain, and her ambition would serve her well with my crown. She has even shown me a plan to build a trade network encompassing all of the west, and even one thought out properly! I was loath to send her to another meeting of men so soon after the ball, but she insisted and so I let her.

And now my mind returns to that ball. Oh Unfurc, Son of mine, why did you have to fall? Grief threatens my will and mind, and the loss of an heir threatens my country!

As much as I wish to ruminate, however, there are things I must do. The berapi of Estglaz have proven somewhat hard to establish full control over, but I believe that I am on the verge of driving out the last bastion of the secessionists. With them gone, they should soon fall into place. Similarly, I'd found much popular support for a new ruler in the Drugaud region, and they were ready to hand control of the "Western Informational Hub", whatever that means, directly to me. Finally, I must issue an edict to raise troops in Skarval, just in case the Sah'raa Civil War spills forth into my lands.

I cannot forget my wounds or the loss of my son, but I can put them aside for now, to let them fester while I attend to the business that is mine. The Hegemony of Glazfell must hold strong, no matter what happens to my line. It simply must.

    Sympolemou

Ironfang looked down at the table, full of metal pieces strewn about in a variety of shapes, ranging from arms to legs and even parts of heads. Each of them molded to fit a Sympol's body and their biological structure. He picked up one of the prosthetic arms, looking it over and comparing it to his own before setting it down. He heard the pitter patter of footsteps slowly approaching him, finally stopping as they reached his side, and slowly spoke up.

"They say you're trying to humanize us."
"They can call it what they want, won't change it."

The Duke turned his eyes slightly to look at this new arrival, this stranger that he should know and feel so much more for, and yet couldn't. His bastard son, born from a mistake, without lineage or nobility to his name. Ironfang didn't know it at the time, but his drunken fit at the Raaneki Games lead to more than just fiery words and a sword-dance with the beautiful Raaneki Princess, it lead to this. This thing that Ironfang had no idea how to handle, or treat, or feel for. He merely was there, standing before him, and Ironfang felt nothing.

"What did you call it again?"
"A feudal system. I distribute my power amongst several families spread across the land, who pledge loyalty to the land."
    "Oh..... Ok."

And there they stood, in utter silence as the Duke contemplated how to further improve his nation, and his bastard merely tried to understand it all. They never looked at each other, and it's doubtful the Duke even wanted to. Slowly, he picked up one of the prosthetic arms, looking at it with round eyes as his arms trembled with the weight.

"Do I have to do it?"
    "Yes."
    "Why?"
"Because I had to, and your son will have to, and his son will have to."
"And why do they have to do it?"
"Because my iron throne is not a toy. It is a burden, a powerful weight that must be held aloft and preserved. It is a terrible responsibility, one that you will hold until the day you die, and one that you must be reminded of everyday."
    ".....Is it painful?"
    "Extremely."
    "Will I die?"
    "It's not likely."
    "I don't want to die....."
"I don't think many want to."
"Not on a cold table, not like that. I want to die with a sword, with.... with dignity."

Ironfang suddenly locked up, his body growing incredibly stiff before rotating and placing an iron claw on his bastards shoulder. Gripping him tight, he kneeled down to stare him eye to eye, and sneered.

"There's no such thing. Our bodies break down, sometimes when you're ninety, sometimes before you're even born, but it always happens and there's never any dignity in it. I don't care if you're running, fighting, or crying on an operating table, it's always ugly, ALWAYS. First your body starts to deteriorate, your organs fail one by one as you try to stay alive, until the only thing left is your mind and heart, and then they fail to. You die, I die, everyone dies, and it's all the same. Death's been in the family since before you were born, so get used to it...."
"............ What happened to your dad? How did he die?"

Ironfang remained silent, staring at this child, this person that supposedly shared his blood. He stared into his soul and through his mind. After a minute of doing so, he loosened his grip slightly and spoke.

"Listen closely, because I'm only going to tell you this tale once......"

The Tale of Ironfang!: A Mad Duke in a Mad World, Death in the Family
The events that transpire happened at the end of Round 8, and beginning of Round 9

Bloodfangs claws curled tightly around the handles of his throne. His teeth gnashed incessantly, occasionally slipping out of place and cutting his gums or his lips. If he were in pain his body showed no signs of it, and his eyes were still glazed over and unfocused, seemingly unaware of his surroundings. Whatever blood did exit his body was quickly lapped up with fervor by his tongue. Flayed, irritated, and sharp as silver, his tongue flicked around in his mouth like a razor barbed whip. The iron throne room was now equally empty and quiet. His concubines were gone, his assistants and strategists scattered throughout Sympolemou to manage other sights. Alone, on his throne, time seemed to take on a completely different quality. It churned slowly, as if it was heavily chewed on within the room and had to be digested with great effort. A vague motion, a tiny jolt of energy coursed through Bloodfangs body in the form of a blink. The only movement he had committed in several minutes. This energy flowed through the rest of his body, rapidly picking up pace, until eventually it energized him enough to walk away from his throne, and through the massive swinging iron doors.

Bloodfang stepped out into the field, the grass flowing gently through his paws and tickling him like a skilled temptress. The wind danced around him, blowing his fur this way and that, granting Bloodfangs immense mane. The sun reflected off of his black fur, shimmering brightly as it dominated the sky, the radiant emperor. A paw tugged at his hand, and he looked down with a smile on his face.

"Papa, can you take me to see the horses again?"
Bloodfang kneeled down so that he was eye to eye with his son, grinning in such a way that caused his whiskers to playfully tickle Queek's face. Placing his paws around Queek's chest, Bloodfang began to lift him up.

"I'm sorry Queek but I can't. Those horses were a travelling display. Maybe next year ok?.......... But in the mean time I have something for you that's better then any horse."

    "Oh yeah? And what's that?"

Without warning, Bloodfang turned Queek so that his belly faced the ground, and began to run around in circles with his son held high so as to mimic flight. Extending his arms to mimic a bird, Queek released a squee of glee and began to laugh uncontrollably. Bloodfang began to swerve left and right, Queek's body jerking along with him as Bloodfang imitated the sounds of harsh winds.

"There's a storm ahead! Prepare for drastic maneuvers!"
Bloodfang jumped up high, tilting his son up towards the sky in the process, and as he came back down he tilted his son for a nose dive. His paws slide across the wet mud with ease, efficiently switching footing so as to maintain balance while bouncing his son up and down. Eventually Bloodfang hit a rock and he came stumbling to the ground. His son crashed with him and they tangled together in a massive ball of tangled fur and limbs. As they slowly disentangled themselves, Queek looked at his dads muddy face (and vice versa), and the two began to laugh raucously. Queek rolled away from his father, tumbling through mud in the process, and prepared himself for another game. Bloodfang prepared himself as well, but stopped as he catched something out of the corner of his eye.

It was a leering Sympol, garbed in flowing black robes, and wielding a black sword. Beneath his hood was fur as white as snow, with eyes as dark as midnight, and no teeth to speak of save his incisors and some malformed left overs. His nose was unhealthily pale, and if the light reflected off his skin just right, it appeared almost as if all his flesh and skin disappeared and left naught but bone. Bloodfang blinks quickly, suddenly realizing that the stranger has disappeared. He turns his head back to face Queek, but feels a shiver up his spine as he does so.

    "Are you coming Father?"

Queek tilts his head inquisitively, wondering why his dad is acting so strangely. Standing up, Bloodfang looks around desperately, his eyes locking onto the door of a cottage a few paces away. Tears in his eyes, Bloodfang races towards the door and turns to soothe his son.

"I'm sorry I have to go, I'll be back I promise!"

Grabbing a hold of the handle, Bloodfang opens the cottage door and steps through it.

Swords clash violently in a flurry of steel and carnage as Sympol warriors fight from all sides. The great iron fort belonging to Bloodfang is non existent, a fact the Duke quickly notices as he stumbles through the flaps of a tent. Armed and armored, he grips the sickle tightly in his hand and looks around for allies.

"Bloodfang you riotous bastard! We're flanked from all sides and the Kishtur Tribe are setting up archers! I knew the Ancestors must have blessed you with this crazy plan, but damn I'd appreciate some more physical assistance right now!"

A hulking bruiser of a Sympol, covered from head to toe in mahogany fur and thick leather armor, cried out for Bloodfangs assistance. Bloodfang stared at his face for a brief moment, suddenly recalling his name as being Corvo Smokeblade, one of Bloodfangs lieutenants during his rise to Dukedom. Holding his scimitar up high, Bloodfang roared for his soldiers to surround him, and spurred them forth with a myriad of insults. Clustered around the black furred Sympol, they created a phalanx of long leather and metal shields. With their illustrious berserking leader leading the way, they cut a bloody path through a section of challengers, and charged up a slope to fight the Kisthtur archers.

Lightly armored and equipped for range, the Kishtur warriors were scythed like wheat during the harvest. Their tribal leader, a lanky and gaunt white furred warrior was sliced into ribbons by Bloodfangs sickle. Breaking apart into formation, Bloodfang began to organize his soldiers with rapid succession. The bows and arrows were repurposed for Bloodfangs use. Corpses were slit open and set rolling down the hill, splattering it in fresh blood that would make movement nearly impossible. Some corpses were lit a flame, thrown haphazardly at the enemy. Arrows were dipped in gore and fire equally, fired at every opposing warrior that tried to come near them. The decapitated head of the Kishtur Tribal Leader was thrown through the air with great force. Bloodfang accompanied the head, as he kicked one of the bodies over the hill, and leaped aboard it with reckless abandon. Surfing down the hill, Bloodfang hacked and slashed with great grace and skill, cleaving off limbs of anyone unfortunate enough to pass him by. Grinding to a halt, Bloodfang threw his sickle into the skull of a waiting opponent, and charged forward. Tackling the maimed body of the warrior, Bloodfang hefted him up and bull rushed the corpse through the door of some merchant store.

The bar was full of various thugs and mercenaries. Sympol sell-swords who held no allegiance for any tribe. They were tough, independent warriors, and for good reason. The tavern was situated on the coast of Rapid Run Shore. Each and every Sympol here was a trained veteran, capable and willing to slit throats for gold. And there were all drunk off their asses. The Duke wanted to think that because of their location, and because they were drunk, they wouldn't show him his proper respect. The truth of the matter was, his name was still being molded. The Sympol people were not used to a single ruler, theirs was a people used to several warring clans vying for dominance in a roiling political landscape, and so anyone claiming to be Lord of all the Sympol would most likely get laughed at for such a ridiculous concept. Sitting down on a stool, Bloodfang asked for a drink and waited to be served.

Slowly but surely the bar grew quieter and quieter, until the only sound was the occasional whisper. All eyes began to focus on him, even without looking the Duke could tell, and finally it felt like the whole room was breathing down his neck.

    Thunk Thunk Thunk

Someone tapped something heavy against the Dukes iron armor, causing him to turn slightly to check it out. A hulking Sympol, some six and a half feet tall and ripped with muscle, looked at the new Duke and grinned. In his hand was a warhammer the size of the Dukes body, with an end large enough to crack open Bloodfangs skull like a large walnut.

"Well lookie 'ere boys! Looks like we's gots ourself the pretty prince from the 'Eart!"

Sneering, Duke Bloodfang began slowly reaching for his black sword, even as he entertained the brute's dialogue.

"Oh I'm sorry, I hadn't known the beauty contest was coming to town, darling. Perhaps I should have made arrangements to pick a Duchess."

Roaring in anger, the Sympol swung his warhammer, a rather obvious attack that was easily dodged by the Duke, and countered with a mighty stab to the gullet. The crowd cheered out as they saw the battle, but slowly died down as they realized what had happened. Burying himself as close to the hulking Sympol as possible, Bloodfang twisted his sword inside his gullet repeatedly, before finally pulling out and dropping him. Blood poured out profusely as the Sympol laid on the ground dying. He began to cough and wheeze, trying to breathe even as the light faded from his eyes. Holding his blade in one hand, Bloodfang turned his body slightly and took a fencing position, holding his sword somewhat loosely in his grip, and standing on the tips of his feet.

    "Well? Come now."

And suddenly the bar exploded in an orgy of violence. Swords, knifes, hammers, maces, knuckle dusters, and even broken pieces of glass were drawn and surging forward. The Duke leapt back, his sword an extension of his arm as he created a wall of dancing iron, his sword flashing back and forth violently until it became an utter blur. The first Sympol to approach him had his sword batted aside in an easy riposte, his head cut open slightly as the Duke slid his blade over his foes and sent him reeling to the side. Spinning about, he brought the blade through another mercenaries throat as he tried to attack from behind, and yanked the blade to the side as he decapitated the warrior and threw his body onto another oncoming opponent. And so it went, the Duke constantly one step ahead of his belligerent foes as they came at him in a swarm. He cut through them with such fluidity and grace that he looked like a stream, coursing its way through a bloody landscape. The room filled with the smell of death as each oncoming foe was dispatched, until finally there was but one. A female Sympol decked in leather armor, with fur as red as clay, and two daggers in her hands. She leaped forward, pushing back the Dukes sword even as he brought it to bear. They tumbled to the ground, wrapped in physical combat, clawing and biting at each other as their weapons were discarded. Slowly, Bloodfangs attempts at resistance slowed down as he smelt the overpowering aroma of blood and death, and looked upon the Sympol on top of him. She too did slow down, looking at the Duke she was prepared to strangle, and merely stared at him. They locked eyes for a moment, long enough for their position to change, and their struggle to turn from one of violence into one of passion. Here she was, Grendel, the mother of Bloodfangs children, and future member of his harem.

Yet even as Bloodfang grew oblivious to his surroundings, he felt a shiver run up his spine, and not the good kind either. He felt another pair of eyes staring at him, stripping him away to bare bones, and so slowly he turned his head to investigate. Sitting at the end of the bar, hands folded, was that very same skeletal Sympol. Yet this time he did not remain silent, he whispered a word through lips that do not move, and reverberated it through Bloodfangs mind.

    "Come."

Throwing himself off his mate, Bloodfang rushed out of the bar, barreling through the backdoor at full speed as his heart pounded with fear. Tumbling through the otherside, he found himself in the hallway that lead to his throneroom. A mountain of Sympol bodies lay beneath him, bloodied and crushed, and his very own hands were drenched in blood. Screams could be heard around him as flames began to spread in the hallway, and a wall of iron began approaching him. A block of Stormvermin in Full Plate began to slowly work their way up the hill, halberds pointed at their Duke, and intent on murder. Closing his eyes, Bloodfang opened them once more to find himself onboard a Guilderene ship. Smiling faces surrounded him as the Doge of Guilder embraced him in a warm hug. He accepted the hug before looking about and trying to remember where he was. All of his memories were so.... blurry now, what did his lover look like again? All that came up were blotches of white. He couldn't... He couldn't remem-

    "Welcome to the Grand Coalition!"

One of the sailors cried out, patting Bloodfang on the shoulder. Turning his head, the Duke smiled and returned the pleasantries. He began to pace now, walking to the center of the entire celebration before turning on his heels. Something was wrong, he wasn't, no, something was wrong. What was it?

"Do it, do it, do it!"

Bloodfang tried to wrap his mind around where he was right now, trying to remember so many things, and yet even as he fell into confusion and despair he felt his body move and act of its own accord. He stood up straight and tall, hand by his sword, and chin tilted up. He realized upon looking up that he had a massive Guilderene Captains hat on, designed for his Sympol head and painted black and red. As a matter of fact, he was dressed in full sailors regalia.

"I am the very model of a modern Sympol-General,
I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I know the kings of Lyradis, and I quote the fights historical
From Zargim to Sympolemou, in order categorical
I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
About these new Raaneki I'm teeming with a lot o' news, (Hmmm... Lot o' news... Lot o' news... Got it!)
With many cheerful facts about their many different kind of brews!

    I'm very good at dissecting and differing biology;
I've murdered monsters the likes of which you'll never see:
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Sympol-General.

    I know our mythic history, from Skriit down to Spirit's Eve;
I answer hard acrostics, I've little time for make believe,
I quote in elegiacs all the tales of Qarimos,
    In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
I can tell undoubted Pagans from Lord of Fire worshippers,
I even know the bastards who dress themselves in Sympol furs!
Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore, (din afore.... Din afore... Hmmm... Wait, got it!)
And whistle all the tunes from those infernal artists in Kasumor!

Then I can write a washing bill in Ashenian cuneiform,
And tell you ev'ry detail of Olwyt's uniform
In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern Sympol-General.

In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
When I can tell at sight a Sympol Sword from a Javelin
When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by "Saisissant",
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern weaponry,
When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery –
In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy – (Strategy.... Hmmm... Strategy.... Wait, got it!)
You'll say a better Sympol-General has never bent his knee!
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I'm still the very model of a Modern Sympol-General!"

And then the boat exploded in raucous applause and laughter, rum was passed around at a feverish pace even as they danced about. Bloodfang drank and drank and drank, joining in the festivities even as he began to brawl and mingle with the other sailors. Oh he could practically lose himself in the revelry, bouncing from crewmen to crewmen, and enjoying it all the while. It felt like it could last forever, until finally Bloodfang bounced into a much harder crewmen. Apologizing, he noted how hard the crewmen's body was, and stopped to look at his face. He nearly lost his voice in screaming when he saw the decrepit, Sympol skull staring into him. Pushing him away, Bloodfang leapt off of the side of the ship, screaming all the while.

"GET AWAY GET AWAY GET AWAY GET AWAY!"

Splashing into the water below, he felt his vision blur as the water rushed into his throat. It threw him about haphazardly, until finally he breached his head to the surface. Gasping for air, Bloodfang found himself once again in the hallway, now with several Stormvermin corpses added to his mountain. His blade was drenched in blood, battered and bruised from all of the force, and he felt his entire body screaming out in pain as he noted the cuts across his form. Walking down from his gore drenched, massacre mountain, his old bones creaked and shot with pain along the way. The door leading into the hallway burst open oncemore, this time with another wall of iron ready to meet him. Except this wall of iron was a singular Sympol, one who's very skin was metal, with glowing green eyes hat reminded Bloodfang of the Death he stared into so many times. Held in this Iron Monoliths hand was a single blade, wrapped in an iron claw larger then any Sympols claw ought to be. He stomped forward, prepared to meet Bloodfang head to head. His eyes grew strained as he tried to look at the Metal Rat, his vision warping and throbbing with each step he took. The fires would disappear, the corpses would vanish into mist, and the metal rat would be replaced with Queek. Running towards his father with loving arms. But then, the world would shake violently and Bloodfang found himself in this nightmarish place again. Over and over it went, back and forth as the metal beast reared its blade back, and Bloodfang finally came to embrace his beloved son. Queek, wrapped so generously in his embrace, Bloodfang felt almost at peace. The world was calm, there was no violence or turmoil, only a father and his son. Everything was right oncemore.

And yet, when he looked upon his childs face, for perhaps the first time since he walked that hall, he saw only a gaping white abyss.

"I find it kind of funny,
I find it kind of sad.
The dreams in which I'm dying,
are the best I've ever had."

Reality shattered, much like Bloodfangs ribs, and the Duke looked down to see a sword stabbed through his chest. Grasping at the blade, he began to slowly gasp, and slowly raised his eyes to look upon his killer. He locked eyes with the metal monster, its green orbs teeming with hatred, and with a trembling hand he slowly cupped it around his metal face. Tears ran down his wrinkly, dried skin, and with a shiver he tried to whisper something to his forsaken son. Yet the words could not escape his mouth, for blood began to rush into his lungs, drowning the Duke. He began to cough and sputter, blood filling his mouth before splattering over his killers face. Snarling, Ironfang pushed his father forward, and the Duke was sent stumbling back. His body crashed through a window, hurdling through the hole as he fell face first down the length of the castle. His vision, turned upside down, Bloodfang began to shut down. His breathing slowed, his body tensed up before relaxing, and his eyes drooped. He felt like he was falling for an eternity, the upside down world around him an utter nightmare. Buildings burned, Sympol warriors clashed and fought in the streets, children screamed, blood flowed, and violence was rampant. Banners were lit aflame, torn down, and casted aside. His world was crashing to the ground, and now so was he.

"I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take.
    When people run in circles,
It's a very, very mad world....."

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"......That was a pretty bad story."
"Shut up you brat, the point is you live with dignity.

    You can't die with it."

“Well done my son.” Sascha looked over his son’s shoulder with a swell of pride. “Now… Do you see how it is different from the others? How the structure is a little larger?” Sascha points here and there as his son Aipiskaupus looked eagerly at how exactly it was put together. Truly, there was nothing more fascinating than this. The way the curved pieces encircle and protect though they themselves were so easily broken.

Tentatively, Aipiskaupus traced his claw down the flat piece in the centre leaving a deep groove. A strange mark on an otherwise smooth, clean piece. Sascha let his son appreciate all of this for a while before gently pushing him aside. With a motion almost too quick to follow, he reached inside and pulled out a piece. It was a little bigger than those in diagrams his son had seen yet otherwise much the same as any other.

    “This is a human heart.”

A pair of Visyknin sit side by side in their new home. "Do we really belong here?" Keshmeo looked up at the small red krystals dotting the ceiling "Was this really a sign of Sanctuary or yet another mistake, Shadou?" Looking toward her father, she sighs heavily. Shaking his head, he responds, "How could I know? How could I ever know? Only death of the Soul awaited us where we were, and though we do not have much in the way of material wealth here we have our lives and our freedom." Shadou smirks disdainfully, "It is more than the peasants back in the Ancient Fiefdom have, though they do not know it."

"Good Even." the Visyknin jumped slightly as they heard the Haljan greet them. How long had she been standing there? "Your report on Kyaralath. I have one question for you. Consume did you Somnorum?"
"Of course not. That would be reckless." Keshmeo recalls their brief time on the Plains of Kyara as they made their way to contact the people of Kyaralath who appear to currently be part of the Ashenite Empire.
"How know you their effects? Truly. This report is incomplete for now. That is all." the Haljan raised her tail slightly as she left the pair feeling thoroughly confused. It was hard enough to understand the Haljan language, let alone any meaning behind their few requests. Nonetheless, if there were any problems aside from the small Somnorum detail the Haljans would have certainly let them know.

Thinking back on their short journey to meet with the Council of the Wise in Kyaralath Keshmeo smiled inwardly and looked at her father's deep red Hanseiyoku streaked with a royal blue. Indeed, the Overworld had begun to change the Visyknin in strange ways even though they still could not tolerate the suns. Despite this minor setback, the inhabitants of Kyaralath who were awake as they passed through were quite friendly and the Council agreed to meet with them in the evening. Though the Tekorvanin would have done similar, the nature of the Yorukuninin and the Aura prevented this feeling of true peace Keshmeo was able to experience while in Kyaralath. Smirking slightly Keshmeo looked to her father again, "The Haljans are entirely immune to the Aura, aren't they?"
Shadou scowled slightly at this rather odd question, "Of course. How else do you think are they tolerating the Orthyknin?"

((OOC Note - The Yorukunin Aristocracy migrated from Yorukuni to Halja. They are now in two factions, the Visyknin and the Orthyknin. The Visyknin and Orthyknin are not way-cool-scorpion-guys!))

At least they have stopped screaming uncontrollably Gulth watched his mentor examine the poor Niskan, Though I am not sure the quiet is better. I hope they wake again.
The Niskan had not long come to the Throthjans Hailjan clutching their chest and breathing hard as though their journey had been particularly difficult. Indeed, it was amazing the Niskan had come here even though they likely knew the penalty for doing so was death. Nonetheless, Gulth Thuidans would not allow the Niskan to die here, now after all they had gone through to live. Surely his cousin would listen to him...

"Gulth. Do you see this?" his mentor was watching him closely. Though as much of the blood that could be cleaned had been there was still a little blood trickling from the Niskan's heavily bruised chest making it incredibly difficult to see if anything was amiss. Shaking his head slightly, Gulth gestured toward the Niskan.
"Did you discover where they was feeling pain? They is clearly suffering far more than these bruises would imply." Gulth's mentor raised an eyebrow in the Haljan equavilent of a small smile and pointed toward the lower-right section of the Niskan's rib cage.
"Yes. See here? This rib is broken. We do not yet know if it will heal. For the moment, there is not much we can do aside from prepare salves to prevent further bleeding and try our best to keep the rib from moving. It could damage more of the Niskan."

Later that day it was announced that the Kaiser would grant the Niskan hospitality in the Throthjans Hailan for as long as necessary. After all, it was hardly their fault they had been hurt. Though respect for the law should be maintained, so too should respect for Life.

[Year 386, The Mormaer's Hall, Razdis]
    "Where is he?"
Mormaer Razkai stood before his throne, hot with anger.
"Ali must be found! He is not a well man; the fire scarred both his body and his mind!"
The two soldiers he was bellowing at shared glances. Both had actually allowed Ali to slip past them; it was now dangerous to cross the Razdissi prince. The fire in his left eye had never gone out, servants whispered, driving him mad. Regardless of the truth, the dwarf had ordered all fires and Lord of Fire worshipers to be removed from his sight some months after his wounding. He had been heading northeast at the time of his disappearance, clad in enclosing steel.

[Later the same year, The Mormaer's Hall, Razdis]
"Keldagrim? Unclaimed? By the stones, this is a great fortun- I mean disaster. Send in agents bearing my banner and visage; the people must swear alliance to their rightful ruler. Avoid violence if possible, but strike if forced."

[TIME REDACTED, The Mormaer's Hall, Razdis]
The Hall was even more shadowy than normal; on the surface it was the darkest hour of the night, yet a few dwarves were still awake. The Mormaer spoke in a whisper, a conspirator in his own kingdom.
"After the debacle of the Ball, I realise that magic exists in this world. We always suspected something was off in the universe, something defied logic, but the great burning proves it."
The gem-eyed stone-skinned mineral-haired Razdissi and half-dwarves awaited his next words.
"One of us, only one so far, possesses some form of this… magic. He is ancient, but still vital. Nagier of the Black Hand Clan."
Some of those huddled round him recoiled; others leaned closer.
"If other realms possess magical power, we should respond in kind. The Deepflame gave Nagier a gift beyond mortal ken; it and he may yet empower others."

    Raaneka, the Painted Lands
((Attribute increases last round: Diplomacy +1, Military +1))
((Attribute increases this round: Diplomacy +1, Military +1))

    Year 386
Tales of the Qarimosi Killings has reached the ears of the Royal Council. Be not afraid, seaborne kindred! By unanimous decision, may a new order be founded among us. May all the bravest and cleverest in the lands go to the Great Stadium of Sarab, and endure the trials of Maian Athletes and Ayavan Scholars. Six champions will train in the use of sortie tactics and Huroshi alchemical components, and shall become the first Raaneki Fellows. Their task shall be to find the killer--man or beast--and either bring it to justice or put it to death.

May these Fellows bring a new age of exploration and glory!” the King’s words were drowned out by the sound of Raaneki applause.

Spoiler: The Fellowship of the Qarimosi Killings, pt. I
    Show
They were the first Fellowship. They knew nothing of the glory they would inspire in the hearts of many a leal liege to the Council. They only knew the quest, and the quest is what drove them. Let that be a reminder to all who would follow in their footsteps.

Ghor and Teja, twin Raaneki giants, were the rock of the fellowship in times of danger. They would go on to be captains in the Third Raaneki Infantry, and who has not heard of that army’s readiness for grim battle and dire sabotage? Ghor carried spear and shield, and wielded them with power. Teja hefted an oversized Raaneki cutlass, and none could stay his wrath.

The gnomes, Agadhamast and tiny Bhisamkabha, were no taller than a man’s knee. They eventually rose to become members of the Royal Council, but answered many other quests before. They brought broad knowledge of civilization and its history, and they debated everything. In gnomish fashion, they sought clues to understand their quarry even as they chased it.

And whose heart wasn’t stirred by the tragedy of Anton Plainswalker? He was a dour man and a skilled hunter upon the Qarimosi highlands. As a scout of the First Qarimosi Archers, there were few who could best him (or escape him) when he had bow in hand. All would have been lost if not for his sacrifice in the streets of Melytis. May he be glorified forever.

And their leader, the greatest of them, Sir Joradar. Called “the Loud” for his service in the Battle of Hrathan-Tuor, when his clarion voice rallied a shattered army, and bought victory with spear and sword. His children’s grandchildren will carry the name Joradaro, so great was the glory he won. He had won many duels with sword and buckler, but he preferred the subtle work of sabotage to open combat.

Their gear was light. Ghor, Teja, and Sir Joradar wore mithral mail and weapons, but disguised themselves with Qarimosi garb often enough. Agadhamast and Bisamkabha wore robes of black silk, and carried packs of parchment and quills for notes and sketches. More devious, they carried phials of sleepflower pollen and burnflower extract from Kasumor. Officially it was an Ayavan study of their properties, but this tale will reveal the rigorous scholarship of this “study.”

They set out with nothing but rumors. Rumors, and the will to follow the quest. The quest called them to go into harm’s way, and they did so with courage and cunning. See their harrowing adventures yourself, in the next issue of…

    The Qarimosi Killings!

    Year 387
The Jeweled Cities of the Central Sea, long friends and allies to Raaneka, will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their union in the Spring of the year. Each of the members of the Royal Council shall attend, along with their retinues and families. The advisors to the Council shall rule in the absence of our leaders.

But you must meet them,” pleaded Princess Calaki. “They’re such dear friends!

Dezarajacarita huffed a tiny huff. “To suffer the effects of daylight in such tropical conditions would be most taxing to our sensibilities. We shall attend if the Council deems it wise,” sometimes, his ego was insufferable, “though we are happy to grant full bargaining power over our resources to the rest of the Council. There are tomes to peruse, and new studies to conduct.

    Year 388
In the spirit of fellowship, may our friends and allies in Lyradis and Razdis accept our finest vintages of Raaneki Heartwine. May its power lend even greater skill to their diplomatic efforts.

Who writes this?” the Queen said in a huff. “So many words.

    Year 389
To honor our agreement with Celero, may four Raaneki construction guilds travel to Celero to assist in the Great Bereginian Restoration Project. That they might honor a separate agreement with us, Bordeux has recruited our friends among the Na’nuk to begin construction on the Royal Palace at Bandar. There shall be a new Council Hall, and offices and apartments for each of the Councilors and their advisors.

King Krama spoke over his wife. “And we shall build a new mansion among the Heartwine Fields.

Anguri’s interest was piqued. “Our family must protect the Heartwine. Let it be done.

    Year 390
For the bounty of trade and the necessity of war, may construction begin on a new fleet of Qarimosi warships. May every fleet receive a new battleship, known to all as an Elephant Galley, and may it be made a fit means of transportation, takeoff, and landing for the Raaneki Berundas.

    Year 384

They had been talking in circles for hours.

"Our father is dead Artem, he named me heir for a reason and I will not make your 'son' mine. I'm not even convinced that Branimir is your son."

"Vanya, please do this for me?" Artem pleaded. Vanya looked away.

"I cannot ignore the succession laws, you know this. Why are you even asking this of me?"

Finally realising that he would be unable to convince his brother Artem said nothing and left.

To officialize this from last round:

    PAX VARINEL
Pact for Eternal Peace in the Heartwaste

Henceforth the signatory nations of this document pledge to ensure the sovereignty and peace of the region known as the Heartwaste, the freedom of its people and all matters specified within this document.

    1. Peace and Defense
    1. Signatory nations pledge to never act against the Heartwaste, be it through military actions, subterfuge or undermining its trade with other signatory nations.
    2. Furthermore, signatory nations pledge to defend the Heartwaste should any nation, signatory or not, attack the Heartwaste.
    3. The Heartwaste pledges to never raise its maximum amount of military troops.
    4. The Heartwaste pledges to use its troops only for its defense and shall not hinder the just military efforts of signatory nations as long as they do not hinder the sovereignty and peace of the Heartwaste and the freedom of its people.
      1. To this end, signatory nations pledge that their troops shall never enter into the Heartwaste, unless it is to defend the Heartwaste or by specific agreement with the sovereign ruler of the Heartwaste.
      2. The Heartwaste pledges to not harbor troops of any nation, whether signatory or not, with a purpose other than the defense of the Heartwaste.
    5. The Heartwaste pledges to never conduct military actions that could in any way be considered offensive actions, other than against those who invade it and violate its sovereignty, peace and freedom. In addition, the Heartwaste pledges to never conduct actions of subterfuge against the signatory nations.

    2. Sovereignty and Freedom
    1. The Heartwaste shall be ruled by Valineth Varinel, legitimate Queen of the Heartwaste, until such time that she passes away or abdicates the Throne of Thorns to her heir, as chosen by her from among her children who prove themselves capable of rule.
    2. Should signatory nations possess or come into possession of a claim to the Heartwaste, they well rescind it willingly.
    3. People of all religions shall be allowed to move freely throughout the Heartwaste. Pilgrimage to the Blazing Temple shall be made easier by construction of a road up the mountain.
    4. Missionaries shall be welcomed to the Heartwaste freely, though no religion may hold the power of majority within the region unless by specific agreement of the sovereign ruler of the Heartwaste.
    5. Other faiths shall be allowed to build temples to their faith in the major cities of the Heartwaste, as long as these come no nearer to the base of the mountain of the Blazing Temple than 90 Pryonic kilometers.

    3. Resources
    1. Signatory nations pledge that they shall all ensure that bloodfire shall never be used militarily or to bring harm to sapient living beings.
    2. The springs of bloodfire shall be sealed, save one. The bloodfire from this spring shall be used in research efforts in the hopes of creating a way to turn bloodfire non-volatile. Once such a measure has been found, the springs shall be unsealed and all traded bloodfire shall be treated with it before leaving the Heartwaste.

    4. Cooperation
    1. The Heartwaste pledges itself to cooperate in any major projects that promote peace, justice and cooperation that might strengthen the ties between the people of the Heartwaste and those of its neighbours, trading partners and protectors. If not in major ways, then in minor ways.

    5. Nation-Specific Agreements
    1. Guilder pledges to bestow upon the Heartwaste their alchemical technology once it has been developed, so that it may be used to create non-volatile bloodfire. In return, Guilder has first rights to the non-volatile bloodfire, should they wish to exercise it.
    2. Sympolemou pledges to send true ice to the Heartwaste so that it may be used to develop a measure to create non-volatile bloodfire. In return, Sympolemou has second rights to the non-volatile bloodfire after Guilder, should they wish to exercise it.

So do agree the Signatory Nations:
    The Heartwaste
    Wenyavuk
    The Triumvirate
    The Bordeux Concordat
    The Kingdom of Ashenia
    The Holy Kingdom of Sycia
    Razdis
    The Sympol
    The Glazfell Hegemony
    The Guilderene Expanse

    • Andust Ruffio, third-born child of Queen Yasira is betrothed to Mira Ignato, heir to the Ignato Empire.

    • Trade with Ignato: Aloren Goats for Propinlonge Pigs

    Military: Raise one naval unit
Curiosity: Repair the Port of the Grand Coalition (1/5?)

    • The Bereginian people suffer much. Though the project to restore to them some of their land, many males see their likelihood of being partnered off as slim with the dwindling numbers of Bereginian females. And though harems are common in their culture, the youngest males see little to no future in staying in Bereginia just to be one of dozens if not hundreds of husbands. So they form bands of mercenaries, with the permission of the queen, and begin to look for work.
    • Queen Yasira falls ill in 386, and Princess Amalia is ordered home from Ashenia to assume her Regency. In early 387, Queen Yasira passes away, in much the same manner as her father, surrounded by family and close friends Queen Regent Amalia Cordelia Noth is coronated a week later.
