Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
Personally, I like to think of it as interrelated "action plot" and "character plot": Each one drives the other forward, pulling the story between them like some sort of literary rail gun; but they share the same high-level structure so you can examine them in isolation, or compare them across entirely different stories (this is why allegory can be a thing).

Bah, you give up too soon.
Well, without carbon dioxide we wouldn't have proper respiration, so that makes sense. Of course, that's the reason why no State has done so. Why are you looking at me like that?
As others have pointed out, we also have chicken-fried steak. And okra. And fish.
Maybe. Attributions vary. But it never came from Mexico. Just Chi-Chis. Which is pretty funny for contextual reasons.
On topic, yup, Granma's zinger was nicely delivered. I'm a little surprised at Hilgya's shaken reaction...but at least she played nice.

I love that the dwarves have "water over the tunnel" as a saying instead of "water under the bridge."
I also love that even being a 15th level CoDzilla doesn't immunize someone from being embarrassed by their parent in front of their friends.Forum Competition Awards

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
Yes!
This is exactly what I wanted from Hilgya and Sigdi meeting. And exactly what Hilgya needs.
And it’s nice to see that Hilgya basically is over her issues with Durkon - compare her insulting him to his friends earlier and assuming he’s sleeping with every other female character to her “eh, it’s all fine, it’s in the past” response now when Sigdi asks if he acted right. I think Sigdi’s attitude of “you’re both adults, it’s none of my business, and it’s between you” helped elicit that response.
And Sigdi does not appear to think that Hilgya killing Durkon and immediately raising him makes her definitively Evil. Sigdi finds it death-threat-worthy, sure, but not something that prevents her from being otherwise friendly with Hilgya. I get the impression that adventurers treat life and death a tad more casually than the average person.Last edited by LadyEowyn; 2019-01-25 at 07:34 PM.

Just what I needed after a long week at work: a comic full of YESNESS! XD
I love that momma Dwarf so much. And also how she was already making a good impression before the threatening kicked in.

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
Despite thoroughly enjoying OOTS from page 1, I have not had a good laugh for sometime, the tone being somewhat more serious, but the last two strips have been a couple of crackers, really funny. Appreciated!

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
I remember an interview with a writer/producer from Six Feet Under where, as every show starts with a death, he was auditioning actors for the role of, for this week, an old person who looks out a window and dies of boredom.
He found out one of the actors auditioning for the bit role had a tremendous resume, and he felt embarrassed to even ask this fellow to audition for such a small part. He even apologized to the actor. The fellow just smiled and said, hey, he likes working as an actor, every part is work, and auditioning is just part of getting that work.I owe Peelee 5 Quatloos. But I am going double or nothing that Durkon will be casting 8th level spells at the big finale.
I bet Goblin_Priest 5 quatloos that Xykon does not know RC has the phylactery at this point in the tale (#1139).

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
Maybe in the sense you think, but not in the sense it's intended. I think you know that, though.
I guess one point of clarification is that I'm talking about narrative stories that are performed-- dramatic works rely on action and on the audience's ability to empathize with the characters taking the actions they do. Literature tends to be much more descriptive; it's a medium much more suited to painting a picture of a full world. I think more TV shows emulate literature rather than drama, and I think that sort of defeats some of the purpose and power of having live performers.

I may be a bit late to jump on this particular bandwagon, but I really really like Sigdi. She's so interesting and cool and wise! And cunning in a way too! Gotta say, best OotS parent so far I think. That is counting Durkon as well as Elan's mom too.

Sigdi is officially the best fictional grandmother of all time. I gotta admit it took me a second to figure out she made a threat toward hilgya though. It just came so completely out of nowhere.

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
In the course of most character interactions I read in fiction, the assorted variations of 'hurt my (insert loved one here) and I will kill you' trope make me want to bang my head softly against the wall in despair, but in the context of this being an adventure setting where Resurrection is kept on hand by pretty much every party of the appropriate level as well as Sigdi's nuanced version of it is probably my favourite use of it I've ever seen.
I hope to be approximately that awesome when my grandchildren arrive at some distant day... not that I would ever raise my child in such a way as to act in such a reprehensible manner as either of these two layabouts and rapscallions.

Rich's dwarves are adorable. I realize that I have not been keeping up with the discussion. Beyond having 3.X's best saving throws, dwarves are just so freakin' cute.

Re: OOTS #1153 - The Discussion Thread
While it's true that it helps to be reminded that helping others doesn't have to mean hurting yourself, part of the issue with Hilgya is that she also just doesn't seem to care about the happiness of others (child excepted naturally). It's going to be a long road.
Especially if she remains stubborn at believing she did nothing wrong.

That doesn't help. All you get is a saving throw and spell resistance. Negative Energy Protection shuts down level drain.
